DaKiNdLa Verified Member Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 Reality in basketball is one player has such a large impact on the game. Having the GOAT in the same conference for the last 10 years makes it tough. I still love the NBA, watching the Cavs-Warriors is so entertaining. Like I said every sport has its challenges. The Dodgers have been one of the very best teams in MLB the last 3-4 years and haven't made the World Series, does that mean MLB is broken? No just the structure of the league is different so the best team usually doesn't win the championship. Is this true? Or is it more true to say the best team in MLB doesn't necessarily finish the regular season with the best record?
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 Is this true? Or is it more true to say the best team in MLB doesn't necessarily finish the regular season with the best record? I wouldn't really say that. A lot of luck impacts baseball in short sample sizes like the playoffs. It's a long, tedious, season leading up to that. Any team can get hot for a 10-15 game stretch in baseball, even against elite teams. In basketball, one elite player playing to his norms can be all it takes.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 I'd be shocked if the Raptors beat the Cavs without LeBron. Straight up, their offence is horrible. DeMar ISO's all day, no ball movement, no 3 point shooting, no inside game. The NBA is a player driven league. Before it was GM's who made the super teams, now it is the players. Can't be fixed just like that. The Spurs still compete with good teamwork and coaching, but that is a rarity in today's game. That series with the Warriors may have been amazing without the dirty play from Pachulia. Popovich knew everything that his former protege Mike Brown was going to do before he did it and the Spurs were dominating.

I just really don't like how for most teams it makes much more sense to tank to get in position to get that special player.

That's just it 26-27 teams started the NBA season knowing full well they had essentially no chance of making the NBA finals let alone winning it. It's a very unbalanced league. And as epic as the finals have been the last few years it does suck for fans of those other teams.

Baseball is the only sport where you don't really need a top superstar to win.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 So Lott asked a bunch of Blue Jays execs/coaches what their go to offensive stats are and Atkins said xwOBA. Even though its probably obvious he uses it considering their moves this last year its still cool to hear him say it. Smart FO the Blue Jays have.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 Also if you aren't subscribed to the Athletic you should probably do so. Fantastic Jays content and it costs peanuts.

Go, Andrew Perpetua*! *mind you, xOBA may have already existed amongst baseball front offices before Andrew brought it to the masses

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 I hope it's not family related or a career threatening injury, so in the meantime... Yessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 2B is so dire, this is the part where I'd complain about Goins getting too much playing time but Gibby doesn't exactly have much to work with... I don't follow the minor league system much but is there really nobody down there that could potentially be better than the trio of garbage (Coughlan, Goins, Barney) we have now?

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 I'd honestly just stick Pearce there. Same. It sucks that Lourdes Gourriel has been injured all season. He could have potentially moved through the system very quickly and then we'd have a few options for 2B/LF types, not to mention Alford also going down.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 There has to be someone available outside the org. who would be an upgrade at 2B/LF over what we have at the moment. 2 Complete black holes. Hopefully Pearce can start to hit when he comes back but that still leaves a big hole. Blue Jays always seem to have one of the worst benches in baseball.

That's about as good as you'll get without a trade, and there's no guarantee he'd be any better than a Goins/Barney tandem anyway.

Well, if Pearce can hit like he's capable of and can play an adequate 2B (which may not be a stretch) maybe we only need an extra bench piece. Shouldn't be too difficult to find one, and fire Goins into the sun. Wish we'd kept Upton over Goins.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 It would be sweet if they traded Zeke. We aren't that lucky though.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 Same. It sucks that Lourdes Gourriel has been injured all season. Yeah Gurriel's flexibility would be an asset right now. TBF this season would always have been a rush, but if he'd been fit and done OK we could have seen him.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 Blue Jays always seem to have one of the worst benches in baseball. Yes every year it's the same story. Bench is complete garbage. We have no impact depth in the minors. We get forced to put mutiple replacement level players in the lineup at times. If it wasn't for Bautista and Travis having monster May's we would be nowhere near .500. It's extremely frustrating.

Zeke is tied for 3rd on the team in WAR...so apparently everywhere but 1st and 3rd is a black hole.
