THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 At least Smith has been as great as Howell has been awful. Free agent relievers! Smith is on track to have a season worth well in excess of $10M, while making $3M Considering the variance of RPs, would you consider an extension? Personally, I'd look at a 2/10 deal while I had the chance. He looks a lot like Darren O'Day now, perhaps he discovered something, so I'd do it. How long to K/9 rates take to stabilize?
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 what in the f*** happened to Justin Smoak? Injury or breakout? Because I've seen no reports of injury...
Laika Community Moderator Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 How long to K/9 rates take to stabilize? I think it's something like 120 PA. At that point it is 50% stable, so you regress halfway to league average. I was looking at Smith's information earlier and couldn't see any obvious change that would lead to such a massive increase in SwStr%
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 Did he get hurt to? He's good now? I haven't kept up with him but he's dropped his k-rate by more than 10% from last year and nothing stinky is really emerging from his peripherals.

It's amazing what can happen when a fringe POS player like Smoak and Goins gets everyday at bats. Don't you listen to Buck and Pat?

I haven't kept up with him but he's dropped his k-rate by more than 10% from last year and nothing stinky is really emerging from his peripherals. He's a completely different player. He's laying off the breaking balls he was swinging over consistently last year. He's also barreling up balls more than anyone on the roster. I'm tempering my excitement but he is looking far from useless and actually providing great value. Who knows if it will continue. But they definitely gave him that extension thinking they figured something out with him. It's night and day.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 Gibby f***ed the order up but that lineup looks the AL All-Star team compared to what we were trotting out there a couple of weeks ago.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 Doesn't Boston have some sort of eye exercise they do with players to improve pitch recognition? I wonder if the Jays implemented something like that and if it's possible that something like that would have had an impact on some of the players who previously struggled with that aspect of the game.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 Finally, an MLB worthy lineup! Watch us get blown out now. I'll accept it as long as no one else gets f***ing injured.
Governator Community Moderator Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 The line up looks great until I looked further down and saw the starting pitcher.
Laika Community Moderator Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 The line up looks great until I looked further down and saw the starting pitcher. Bolsinger vs. AJ Griffin is a classic 20 run matchup though
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 It's late May and Kevin Pillar is batting leadoff and Justin Smoak is batting 5th and I'm not even mad about it.
guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 1. Kevin Pillar ® CF 2. Josh Donaldson ® 3B 3. Jose Bautista ® RF 4. Kendrys Morales (S) DH 5. Justin Smoak (S) 1B 6. Russell Martin ® C 7. Troy Tulowitzki ® SS 8. Devon Travis ® 2B 9. Ezequiel Carrera (L) LF a decent lineup for the first time in months, I just might cry
LGBJ29 Verified Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 swap Travis and Martin. This isnt 2014 Russell
LGBJ29 Verified Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 probably the best 7-8 guys in the league
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 I don't like Morales hitting 4th. But it's nice to see a major league lineup again.
nextyear Verified Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 Kendrys Morales is so slow getting to 1st base and so easy to double up that it is difficult for me to get excited about his play. It is either Kendrys hits a double or home run, or count on him being out in a double play.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 Bolsinger vs. AJ Griffin is a classic 20 run matchup though Even with the Sanchez injury the 2 off days this week allowed us to skip Boslinger and go with a 3-man rotation. Kind of upset they didn't do this.

vdubmvp Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 The line up looks great until I looked further down and saw the starting pitcher. Ugh and then scroll down even more to see that we get Joe West for this series...
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 Jays backup C's providing -1.1 WAR this season. That's pathetic. Shatkins needs to do something about this. A simple move could be a big improvement.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 swap Travis and Martin. This isnt 2014 Russell They project basically the same, it doesn't really matter. Martin gets on base more, good for a guy like Tulo to drive in with extra base hits and/or Travis to hit one of his patented doubles.

But they definitely gave him that extension thinking they figured something out with him. It's night and day. Similar situation as with Pillar. I guess both have made conscious effort to improve their plate discipline. Also, I saw where Smoak said he went into the season with the approach to focus more on contact than on trying to crush the ball. But that's the thing with these big guys: all they need to do is barrel it up with a nice easy swing and it's going to go far. Seems like Judge can pretty much hit a HR with a half swing sometimes. Sano is another big guy known for a short compact stroke. Probably getting to play everyday has been a help for his confidence. And although it is very small sample set, his results batting right-handed are pretty impressive so far (1 K in 39 PA and slugging .788). So when Pearce comes back it seems putting him in LF (has made most of the plays out there albeit a bit lacking in grace) makes more sense as long as Smoak keeps chugging along. Only problem is Gibbons wanting to play Zeke.

Right, and they gave him that extension after a hot May last year... we still need to see how this all unfolds. So far so good... I never seen the extension as a deterrent($$$), but the off-season told us different. At least we have Pearce in the fold. Dude is much better than he's appeared, he starts hitting and gets hurt, our season in a bubble.
