Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted May 23, 2017 Posted May 23, 2017 Gibby is an idiot, i'll tell you what he's thinking regarding Alford. He figures at some point during the game, he'll have a valid reason to insert Alford, either to PH or for defensive purposes. Let's go with the experienced less athletic inferior bat and defender over the better more athletic younger bat with huge upside because that's just how things are done. His savvy move will be using Alford late, Alford contributes towards a win, Gibby leans back in his chair post game and winks at every reporter when asked about Alford's contributions and his decision in using him. Haha sounds about right. I do think there's a lot to be said about being up with the big club and soaking up the atmosphere etc, but he could be getting that experience while playing and possibly helping us more than these fringe guys. #FreeAlford
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted May 23, 2017 Posted May 23, 2017 #2 or #3? Sanchy Stro JD Travis (arguable) Pillar or Osuna (I'd go with Pillar) Travis ahead because he is younger, not yet in his prime, and better bat (Pillar's good start to 2017 notwithstanding) C'mon Grant. How do you explain Pillar being #2 or #3 in trade value?
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted May 23, 2017 Posted May 23, 2017 At the risk of ad nauseum, Gibby is a bottom end MLB manager and will be fired at the same time the trades are made.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted May 23, 2017 Posted May 23, 2017 Haha sounds about right. When i heard that Alford was being called up, i thought it was either a short stint until Pillar was back or he was going to see significant playing time if he remained on the roster when Pillar came back. I honestly don't know what the f*** their doing with this kid because if they just need another able bodied OF, then just keep Dwight Smith JR on the roster and send Alford back to AA so he can get his every day at bats. Why start his arb clock if he's not going to play significantly? It's almost like management isn't aware that he's a top 40 prospect.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 23, 2017 Posted May 23, 2017 Hasn't Alford started a few games over the weekend and pulled later in the game? (I was away during the long weekend)
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 Have to admit I'm with the herd here. Why start Bautista at 3B if it's only to move Coghlan to the OF? This would be a perfect opportunity to bench Coghlan. You would think that would be the whole point.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 Looks to me like Gibbons is just pulling names and positions out of a hat pregame.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 C'mon Grant. How do you explain Pillar being #2 or #3 in trade value? Grant?
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 So this Alford thing is going to be another Pompey situation? Don't play the black guy unless we need someone to run.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 So this Alford thing is going to be another Pompey situation? Don't play the black guy unless we need someone to run. Yeah, and Pompey was never handed the starting cf job because he was black. Alford will bust the door down eventually. He's a good looking young player.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 The interesting dilemma will be what if we are around .500, and just a few games out of a second wildcard place? So the Ricciardi era?
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 Yeah, and Pompey was never handed the starting cf job because he was black. Alford will bust the door down eventually. He's a good looking young player. But he's black. How good looking could he possibly be?
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 So the Ricciardi era? Nah, keep reading the thread and you'll get to the post that shows the difference.
vdubmvp Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 I just realized that it's only a two game series. Ugh, two off days in the same week is such garbage scheduling.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 Alford's on the 10 day DL with a hamate fracture of wrist... Dwight Smith Jr. is up Jesus this team is cursed this year
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 f***. Hamate fractures have been known to be the kiss of death no? Don't they zap your power for a couple of years? This could significantly stunt his growth. Brutal.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 I think you are overreacting a bit. I always thought it was the injury that took a long time to fully recover from...I hope I'm dead wrong.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 I always thought it was the injury that took a long time to fully recover from...I hope I'm dead wrong. He'll be out 4-6 weeks then he needs to rehab, perhaps longer, according to Rotoworld. But "the kiss of death" is too far. He'll come back from it.

He came back for the AFL and played well and played well the following season.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 Wrist injuries can definitely sap power but I don't know if this is severe enough to warrant that concern. Hopefully not.

Cases obviously vary.
vilifyingforce Verified Member Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 DFA Mike Ohlman wow. We litterally have scrubs on the 40 that could of gone. This is an extremely poor depth move. He's 100% gone. He cleared.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 He cleared. Good. I'm shocked nobody picked up a catcher with pop and 3 options.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 Good. I'm shocked nobody picked up a catcher with pop and 3 options. It's probably because he sucks. Which the Jays corrected evaluated.

Well that's great. Am I (and my memory) completely off here? Haven't hamate bone injuries historically been really challenging for hitters in the past (maybe it depends on the severity and such).

Haven't hamate bone injuries historically been really challenging for hitters in the past (maybe it depends on the severity and such). You're partially right, it's a concerning injury. We don't know how bad it is just yet and he could be a case like Rowdy Tellez or it could be something worse. It's probably not a kiss of death though. In the end it probably just really f***s this year of a development up for him and burns his service time and next year he's fine.

Really too bad, as he already lost development time last year to the concussion. Given Alford's past, he needs this development time to untap his potential.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 It's probably because he sucks. Which the Jays corrected evaluated. I mean he isn't anything special but surely useful.
