Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2017 Posted April 16, 2017 Man. I think this team seriously missed the boat on Eric Thames. I just entered this thread to post about this. Holy f***, I love Shatkins but good god this LF/1B situation. You have to start one of Smoak or Carrera every day and you can't beat 3/16 for Thames? f*** me, this is the final nail in the coffin for me not trusting Steamer. Steamer said Thames would be very good and he's been really f***ing good.

Steamer said Thames would be very good and he's been really f***ing good. And I'm not just saying that, the same way you would about any player that suddenly found it. Thames always had potential. I still remember seeing him for the 1st time in spring training years ago. Took the hardest cut I have ever seen. I'm pretty sure a lot of guys on here were calling for his signing as well. But signing Justin Smoak was just an awful signing. There are literally 10 or 20 guys I can come up with that would be a better signing then that. Travis Snider is garbage now and he would have been a better option at that money. Matt Hague deserved the job more then Justin Smoak did.. and he didn't deserve the job. I just can't undertsand why you throw away money like that.

My guess is he'll pop 30 HRs this year and have an OBP that's barely over .300

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 17, 2017 Posted April 17, 2017 (edited) It's so depressing when you invest so much time as a fan and the season is essentially over already. I have absolutely no reason to tune in anymore. I mean if there were some good young players to watch develop, grow, etc. but there is nothing of that to be seen unless Tellez is called up. I'll need to find a new escape from real life. I'm gonna have to gut this season out as my 6 year old son won't care that it's all for not and I certainly don't want to ruin it for him. It's a sad reality. Everyone is going to have to find their own way to make the best out of it. Edited April 17, 2017 by Brownie19
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 17, 2017 Posted April 17, 2017 So I'm living at my parents as we reno our main level. Just found out my neighbour was drafted by the Jays the same year as Doc. He was Doc's roommate and was college roommates with Eric Gagne. I might have to have a few more beers with him!

Not to this extent but it was difficult coming out a Spring Training with much confidence. The off-season really sucked and felt incomplete. A rebuild is probably best. The casuals will now be consumed with the Maple Leafs anyway.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted April 17, 2017 Posted April 17, 2017 You guys need to back back away from the cliff. This team is still better than the Orioles and they have even less on the farm than we do.

Once teams get some data on him and make adjustments on how they pitch him, he will need to adjust accordingly. Let's see where he is half way through the season.

Not to mention that 5 of his 6 HRs came this weekend at GABP. Cincy's pitching staff still has many questions.. their 8-5 start is baffling, especially with Rookie Davis and Finnegan hitting the DL...

We had stretches like this in each of the past 2 seasons and made it to the ALCS. The season may well be over, but I prefer to be optimistic and not jump off the deep end after 2 weeks. Being emotionally unstable was never good for anyone.
dunfield Verified Member Posted April 17, 2017 Posted April 17, 2017 yes, they are better than a 2=10 team...even the amazing mets of 1961 won 40 games...but yes this is a bad baseball team whose pitching health luck has run out

I have been wondering whether this team has a sports psychologist. If so, I wonder if they need a change there, because these guys are just all stressed out to the max right now. They need to figure out a way to loosen up and just play ball.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted April 17, 2017 Posted April 17, 2017 While I'm still trying to remain level-headed about this, what's worrisome about the Jays is that this is pretty much how last September went for the team. Absolutely brutal offense and heavy reliance on the starting pitching to come through for any chance to win. A quick burst of offense in the ALDS made us forget about all that and then Cleveland's BP really exposed the Jays hitters. What's the average output over the last 50 games including the post-season? Something like 3 runs?

JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted April 17, 2017 Posted April 17, 2017 Pearce was crying in the dugout today https://gfycat.com/CapitalThoughtfulKingsnake It shows how much these players care. How many on this forum are ready to throw this team under the bus?

They just need the next two years to restock and suck.

Yeah I think the chances of climbing out of a 2-10 start are pretty much slim and none, especially with the injuries tacked on. If everyone was healthy, then maybe, but not now. Friggin' Latos and Lawrence will probably be in the rotation for the next little while combined with no JD and a bunch of replacement level scrubs scattered all throughout the lineup. It's bad and I don't think this roster has a 40-19 run (or whatever it was) in them like the post trade deadline 2015 team did. I think the most frustrating thing is we started with 6 games against the O's. They are 5-1 against the Jays are 3-2 against everyone else. They got to pad their win total at our expense.
BlueJayWay Verified Member Posted April 17, 2017 Posted April 17, 2017 Yeah it's not so much the 2-10 start, it's everything else. It's early, and if we woke up tomorrow with the 2015 Jays they'd have a ton of time to right the ship. But this team is not anywhere near that. It looks old, in decline, and now the injuries are piling up.
