Gary Verified Member Posted April 13, 2017 Posted April 13, 2017 Smoak, Carrera, Goins, and Saltalamacchia. 4 of the 13 bats don't really belong on an MLB roster, and there aren't even injuries that lead to this. Very frustrating. They're Gibby's boys so that's all that matters.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted April 13, 2017 Posted April 13, 2017 http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-blue-jays-upcoming-quandary/ Jays win projection dropped to 81-81 and playoffs odds fell from 52% to 26% so far this year according to FG I distinctly recall this discussion and erosion of percentages to the mid-20's last year when the team was 19-24. We are owed at least one 11 game win streak this year.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 13, 2017 Posted April 13, 2017 They're Gibby's boys so that's all that matters. Enough with that s***. Shatkins already said Goins was kept because he had value on the trade market (and Upton didn't). Salty's bat actually isn't terrible for a backup catcher. It's the catching part that he struggles with.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted April 13, 2017 Posted April 13, 2017 Gotta love the Carrera and Goins hate when Carrera has pulled his weight and Goins has 4 PA. Yes dead weight on the bench but you're not going to pinch hit for Bautista, Martin, Travis or Pearce. I

Team needs to hit. But I guarantee you that ugly ass bench will become a problem at some point.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 13, 2017 Posted April 13, 2017 Let's just settle this lineup discussion. Your best hitter bats 2nd and that's Donaldson. The other two bat first and 4th. Bautista has experience so let's put him leadoff and Morales 4th. That leaves 3rd and 5th for our two next best hitters. It doesn't really matter. Let's just go Pearce 3rd and Tulo 5th. Then Travis 6th, Martin 7th, Pillar 8th and whatever corpse you want to put in at 9 (I prefer Zeke). 1. Bautista 2. Donaldson 3. Pearce 4. Morales (S) 5. Tulowitzki 6. Travis 7. Martin 8. Pillar 9. Zeke (L) We'll never see it but that's probably what it should be.
Caper Verified Member Posted April 14, 2017 Posted April 14, 2017 The Jays are better then their record. but really only a .500 team. I'm kind of glad how the season is going, because it kinda forces the team into rebuilding. God, at least I hope it does.

Juicy prospects man Estrada Happ Liriano Donaldson Bautista (if he consents) Grilli Smith hnnnghh

Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2017 Posted April 14, 2017 Baltimore will give the ball to Alec Asher against us tomorrow. It came down to him and Jayson Aquino but they decided the righty will have more success against our lineup.

My fear is that they will go on a bit of a run to get back to .500 and then kind of stay there the entire year. That will accomplish nothing except keeping them close enough to the 2nd WC to not start selling pieces off.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2017 Posted April 14, 2017 Do you guys f***ing hear yourselves? "I'm kind of glad how the season is going" "Agreed. The 22 year drought had enough .500 seasons that I really don't care to see another one. If they want to go on a massive run to be in the 90 win conversation, then I'll take that over any other alternative, but I'm not expecting that after a 1-8 start where the offence is picking up where they left off at the end of last season. I think the point is if the Jays are not going to make the playoffs, then it's better for them to be bad than to be average.

You really think the teams performance on the field going forward care about what a few people on a message board think. If it happens it happens, I'm sure our FO have a grip on this.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2017 Posted April 14, 2017 So Donaldson is most likely being placed on the DL who comes up Ty Kelly or Coghlan?
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted April 14, 2017 Posted April 14, 2017 So Donaldson is most likely being placed on the DL who comes up Ty Kelly or Coghlan? An outfielder....they will play Goins or Barney at 3rd.....at least that's what it seems they will do

You really think the teams performance on the field going forward care about what a few people on a message board think. If it happens it happens, I'm sure our FO have a grip on this. I don't think anyone really *wants* it to happen. Winning a World Series is what everyone wants, or should want. But a bad start like this will get people talking about contingency plans, and that's all it is at this point. Shatkins are smart. They won't concede anything unless the on field product is bad enough to justify it. Some times you have to hit rock bottom to see positive change, and if the Jays are still bad two months from now, then that's all people are speculating on.
SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted April 14, 2017 Posted April 14, 2017 I think I agree with many of you. A middling year is the worst possible scenario. Ideally, 91+ wins would be awesome. But honestly, do any of you really expect that? A poor season forces some changes that the FO has probably wanted for a while. I can't imagine the prospect/youth haul this org would get selling off the list of vets outlined by someone above. It would be obscene. And I would rather watch a young club struggle knowing that the future is bright than this old club struggle.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2017 Posted April 14, 2017 New as expected... not official as of yet! Fri, Apr 14 Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports that the Blue Jays are expected to place Josh Donaldson (calf) on the disabled list. Donaldson first injured his right calf during spring training and he aggravated the injury on Sunday and again on Thursday. It's unclear at this point how long he might be sidelined, but clearly some rest is in need here. Darwin Barney and Ryan Goins are likely to hold down third base while Donaldson is on the shelf. xposbrad Verified Member Posted April 14, 2017 Posted April 14, 2017 Juicy prospects man Estrada Happ Liriano Donaldson Bautista (if he consents) Grilli Smith hnnnghh Except only Donaldson on that list can bring in decent prospects. Happ/Estrada, maybe a B level prospect, depending what they do until the deadline, but you are going to have to eat salary to trade JB at this point. That's the problem, the White Sox had assets to trade that were late 20s, team control, and actually star players, Jays only have 1 player and he's not even signed long term. If this club keeps Donaldson when they will not be competing for minimum 3 years if not more, it will be a VERY long unsuccessful road of mediocrity.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2017 Posted April 14, 2017 We're not even half way through April, it's far too early to write off the season. There is zero chance that Pearce, Martin, Travis and Bautista will all fail to improve with their bats. One or more start hitting and we can start winning games. With a bit of luck our record would look more reasonable, a few extra hits and we could easily be 4-5 or similar. It's not like we're getting blown out every game. Agree that something needs to change to give us a lift, not sure what that should be - signing someone like Pagan?

I'm not opposed to Pagan but I doubt another guy who is short on reps is going to jump start the offense in the short term.

Yeah I haven't wanted Pagan at any point, I think he's overrated by many in this board. But signing someone who is available is an easy way to introduce something new. The big worry is that if the losing continues for another week it starts to get in the players' heads. Who knows if something else like a lineup change can kickstart a run instead.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2017 Posted April 14, 2017 OF/INF Chris Coghlan on his way to Toronto.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2017 Posted April 14, 2017 ^He should start in LF against righties.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2017 Posted April 14, 2017 At least Coghlan knows how to take a walk.. with strong BB% rates and a little speed.. shocking the Jays waited till game #10 to call him up..
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2017 Posted April 14, 2017 ^He should start in LF against righties. It's worth noting that he started games at third base in Buffalo. He may get a shot there with the big club.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2017 Posted April 14, 2017 I just want a LF that isn't Ezequiel Carrera. If the Mets are planning to just waste Conforto, I'd freaking love it if we could trade for him and then DFA Smoak.
