Nice deal for the Yanks. Meanwhile Smoak is signed for 2 years, 8.4 mil.

And Zaun went on at nausea what a team friendly contract the Jays signed with Smoak. OMG guy is out of touch.

Napoli 8.5M

Carter 3M

Hammel 8M

Waiting it out didn't help anyone

The only guys who got paid were the ones who signed early Desmond, Edwin, Morales etc

Also teams have mostly held back from dumb contracts for one dimensional players

1 WAR sluggers who hit 30 to 40 HR aren't worth 20M a year

36 year olds shouldn't be given 4 year deals, nor should 30 year olds be given 8-10 year deals

Front offices have gotten smarter

Jim Bowden - Rays made the biggest offer to Romo

Offered "much more" than LA

FL has no state income tax either while California is something like 11% for top earners. Pretty crazy for him to turn down a bunch of money like that. LA is probably the most desirable place to live for Mexican-Americans though.

Wow, Romo must really like winning... he already has 3 rings lol.

Guy is already filthy rich and probably just doesn't want to leave his home.

Be interesting to see what Donaldson gets in FA in a couple of years. He's an elite player although he'll be 33 years old. Teams just aren't paying for aging players like they used to with Cabrera, Pujols and Cano.

Still, if you're going to misjudge a market, this is the way to do it.

Well, 32-year old Greinke just got 206M a year ago. Donaldson should get more than that.

What is the max extension you would offer Donaldson today? Assume it covers his last arb (2018) and then X number of free agent years.

7/210m. I feel, health permitting, we could recoup much of that value in the 1st 3-4 years of the contract, perhaps enough for us to end the contract with surplus value.

Now is the time to whisper extension in his ear, after what he just saw Edwin and Jose go through as 30-something free agents.

Absolutely. I really think 7/210M could get it done at this point, but not sure how high Shapiro/Atkins would even go for him. Would they even go past 5/150M?

and follow that whisper up with the names Machado, Harper, Kershaw, Harvey, Cutch, Pollock, Jones, Dozier...lots of competition for $$$ that 2018-19 off-season.

I think Shatkins might be more interested in the prospects they could acquire from a Donaldson trade. Did Cleveland ever give out any massive extensions under Shapiro?

Maybe Hafner? It's irrelevant though. Cleveland was a completely different franchise than Toronto in terms of payroll and competitiveness. Probably a bottom ~5 payroll over his tenure as a Cleveland executive. They literally couldn't afford to extend star players.

Toronto won't be trading Donaldson unless some massive, unexpected, terrible things happen this season. Like, Pillar collides with Travis in the shallow outfield and they both become paraplegics; Aaron Sanchez and Marcus Stroman die in a rap battle; Vlad Guerrero Jr. gets suspended forever because he's literally not human; Alford goes to prison; Tulo and Martin develop coincidental career-ending hip dysplasia; the Teacher's Pension Plan buys the Blue Jays; etc.

I see Donaldson's closest FA comp as a rich man's Justin Turner. Good on both sides of the ball, though Donaldson is obviously a lot better. Should easily get twice of what Turner got, who likely took a hometown discount to stay in LA.

I would prefer to comp him to Robinson Cano + two years of age. Hall of Fame, superstar level talent.

Doubt it.

Was it ever confirmed that this front office offered Edwin 4 years $80 million + a $20 million 5th year option? If so, that's a good indication that this front office will spend.

Yes and Turner just turned 32, which is what Donaldson will be heading into 2018. Seeing as Turner got 4/64 ($16M per), a Donaldson contract of 5/150 would seem sufficiently fair.

ETA: A 6/180 contract might be as far as I see being reasonable. What about 5/170 (structured 30,30,35,35,40), then he still has age 37 and beyond for a new contract.

Not confirmed in exact detail. Just confirmed that Jays offered MORE

Donaldson is better (Similar bat, and has more defensive value) and younger than Edwin though. They'd go higher for him I suspect in both $ and years

I'd do 7/180 or so comfortably

He's already getting 17M and is going to get 20M+ in arb 3 anyway...

That's light, 30 AAV or GTFO is what he'd be saying... he's second to only Trout the past 3 years in value, he's getting paid, lol.

If he was 28 or something, I'd agree. Going in at 32, I don't know if he can expect 30M AAV. 25M per is probably pretty fair, especially if we're talking about 7 years.

Meh... if they want him, that's what it will take imo, who knows.
