G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 Machado will sign with either the Yankees or the Mets. Mets cannot afford and: David Wright 2017 Contract Status: Signed thru 2020, 14 yrs/$192M (07-20) 2017 34 New York Mets $20,000,000 2018 35 New York Mets $20,000,000 2019 36 New York Mets $15,000,000 2020 37 New York Mets $12,000,000 (I suppose they could move Manny back to SS) (Also I suppose there's a small but real chance Wright never plays another MLB game, but hopefully he eventually gets back)
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 Paying someone 20M a year to *not* play really suxxx Though maybe his contract was insured...
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 Also, most front offices now realize that high strikeout 40HR guys aren't that valuable Davis got a little lucky with that contract and signed at the right time This past off season he wouldn't have gotten anywhere near 7 years 161M from any team Not with Carter and Bautista and Edwin all settling like they did 2013 + 2015 Chris Davis would beg to differ. Miguel Sano + even Aaron Judge to some extent would beg to differ
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 Chris Davis is going on the DL Looks like the strike out record will be safe this year. Sano might make a run at it if he stays healthy...
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 2013 + 2015 Chris Davis would beg to differ. Miguel Sano + even Aaron Judge to some extent would beg to differ No one's paying for them like they used to though... (I'm talking about guys who hit 40 HR's and yet still manage only 1-2 WAR, like Carter. Last year BA .218, OBP .313 and he's a negative defender) Low OBP and poor defense, slow speed, etc... (FWIW Judge has a .453 OBP this year and is providing average defense) Bautista and Edwin WERE way better players than that obviously, but I think the other issue that front offices are wary of is the power decline in the late 30's
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 And none of those guys sniffed the 168 wRC+, 7 WAR season that Davis put up. You should have gone with Ryan Howard. At least he put up a 162 wRC+, 5.9 WAR season once. Lol k
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 While the Yankees have obviously been better than us so far this season, I respectfully disagree that their lineup is "a lot better" than ours talent wise. They've had quite a few players doing better than expected, we've have quite a few either doing worse or being injured. Our rotation is better than theirs, and they've prob got a slight edge on relievers. Overall I don't think that there's a big gap between us. While they've over performed they have age on their side. Judge, Sanchez, Castro, Hicks, Didi are all pretty young. Their BABIP is way too high but I don't see a huge regression coming. Donaldson is by far the best hitter of both teams but 2nd base is a disaster with Travis out for a long time. One thing that hasn't really been talked about is how bad the Blue Jays defence has been. And while JD and Tulo are back they still don't look like the defenders they used to be (injuries could be holding them back). Add in the fact that Pillar looks a step slower and Bautista/Carrera gong shows and what looked to be a strength is now a weakness.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 Paying someone 20M a year to *not* play really suxxx Though maybe his contract was insured... If David Wright never plays again, wouldn't his contract be insured and the Mets would be off the hook? I took that into consideration when suggesting them. If not, then it definitely makes it a lot tougher and unlikely. Mets could use Machado either at 3B or SS and they're a big market team that has made big FA signings before. Still think the Yankees are favourites and make the most sense however.

Miguel Sano + even Aaron Judge to some extent would beg to differ One dimensional players who only offer power and no glove aren't as valuable as they once were. Sano is still young, has had a solid season to date offensively in a lot of categories and hasn't been all that bad defensively. Judge falls into the same category. They both aren't 29 or 30 right now, so their value could change in the next 4-5 years before they hit free agency.

Yeah the Yankees are better earlier than expected and will prob fall back a bit this season, but get better in future years. Meanwhile we've been hit by injuries, Travis is a real kick in the teeth for us.

Look - I don't give a f*** how you want to spin it, but Chris Davis put up a 7 WAR season while being a high K% 1st baseman. That's valuable AF.

That's valuable AF. Calm down. I never said he wasn't valuable that season or in 2015. Was it a fluke? Highly unlikely that he would continue to be a 5-7 WAR player moving forward. He hasn't been a consistent hitter throughout his career. And like G-Snarls said, he was lucky to cash in after his 2015 season and that the Orioles likely overpaid and overbid against themselves (when no other team was likely offering him a monster deal to begin with). If Chris Davis was a free agent this offseason, most he gets is EE money.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 An important question for the Orioles - does Zach Britton come back from injury in time to prove his fitness and get a trade haul at the deadline?

They could have a nice trio of young position bats to build their lineup around moving forward with him, Conforto and Dom Smith.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 Casey Lawrence freaking sucks.. 3.2IP, 11H, 6R, 5ER, 0BB, 0K, 2 HR.. in relief of an awful Bergman.

jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 Sox going into the 11th still tied at 3--beat the damn Phillies already! You're a contending team... play like one! Or do they want Tampa to overtake them?
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 (edited) Hat trick for Eddie Rosario hitting a HR off the backup catcher for the Mariners (Carlos Ruiz)... Twins fell one hit short of tying the Texas Rangers for 3rd most hits in one game in regulation (29 vs. the O's in 2007 in that 30-3 rout). Edited June 14, 2017 by jaysfan2014
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 O's lose yet again. Hot seat's got to be getting warm on both Duquette and Showalter--not out of the question one or both could be fired soon as part of a major teardown in Baltimore..
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 Red Sox into the 12th.. WTF is wrong with the Red Sox??? This is as frustrating as the Jays... getting their bullpen taxed trying to beat a last place team..
