MLB Gameday's messed up right now.

 

Mets beat Philly... on only 4 hits, half on Jay Bruce HRs.... while Conforto rots on the bench.

 

And what's with the Reds? About to go to 5-2..neck and neck with the Cubs in the NL Central. But their pitching usage has been strange...Lorenzen and Reed pitched 3 innings tonight in the win. Are they doing this to try to work on their stuff so they can eventually be moved to the rotation?

 

And Brett Cecil still sucks...

Dear Cinci...learn from what you saw tonight. Turn Lorenzen and Reed into 2 to 3 innings guys twice a week.

I think Lorenzen's future is in the bullpen, though he could end up a very good, high-leverage arm. Cody Reed, on the other hand, has pretty legit stuff and deserves a fair shake to crack that rotation before the Reds go all Raisel Iglesias on him.

Was reading the Sports Illustrated baseball preview issue, as part of the profile of each team there's some comments from a rival team scout - can be quite interesting.

 

One thing that stood out though - for the Royals the anonymous scout said that Hosmer is a potential MVP candidate! Can only assume it's the same Jays scout who thinks Smoak is worth a multiple year contract.

Forbes came out with the valuations of each MLB club today. Yanks leading the charge at 3.7B, nearly a full billion ahead of the Dodgers. Jays came in 16th at 1.3B

To be fair, Gurriel isn't the only one in Houston struggling.. outside of Springer and utilityman Marwin Gonzalez, the Astros haven't shown much offense. Altuve's off to a slow start, as is Bregman.. and Reddick's swing is still stuck in Oakland.. and FYI, Houston with RISP is nearly as bad as Toronto (so far).. and Toronto's not the worst--that honour belongs to the Kansas City Royals.. it's been a long fall for a team that was killing the ball 2-3 years ago and winning 90+ games...

No I think he was saying it to demonstrate how good the defence is, albeit in a clumsy way, rather than saying Pillar's offense would or could improve.

Jays 29th.. 3 other supposed contenders are also struggling with RISP in the Astros, Mariners.. even Cleveland (really need Kipnis back ASAP).. and Arizona's #1, which explains their strong start..

 

Of course, it's a very small sample size, and things can change in a week or two..

It may not be a reliable stat, but Cleveland is REALLY struggling to hold runners... of course, it doesn't help they just played Texas and Arizona..two very strong offensive teams. Minnesota is doing a good job keeping runners at 2nd and 3rd from scoring.. did anyone really expect this? Once again, it's a small sample size.

Boyd no-hitting the Twins thru 5... but taking a lot of pitches to do so. Meanwhile, the Tigers are basically swinging at everything Santiago throws.. only 48 pitches thru 4 innings.
