I've recently decided I'm going to read more and was looking for some recommendations on good baseball books. I love the history of baseball, so obviously that would appeal to me, but I'm open if there are good ones on more of the new age topics. Thanks guys.

The Art of Fielding is really good but it's entirely fiction and the setting is college baseball.

100 most influential Canadians in baseball list is out. Ole' Bob Elliot can't let go of a few names and the list is completely Ontario centred but always fun to look at. Denny Berni made the list and he was cool enough to let me practice with the Hawks while I was at Humber.

Can someone explain why Myers DEF value was only -4.4 despite only playing 55 innings in the OF? Is he phenomenal defensively at 1st base?

 

It's alarming this kid was playing CF in 2015, posted remarkably good BsR value last year (4th highest in the league!) while stealing 28 bases - yet is now a full time first baseman.

 

He kind of reminds me of Todd Frazier.

DEF value takes position into account, 1st base is not a very valuable position defensively, so even if he's a good defensive first baseman with , the lack of value the position provides by default hurts his metrics. The 8.0 UZR isn't enough to compensate the lack of value at first base.

He put up 3.8 WAR last year in his age 25 season (finally broke out). I'd call that a pretty good year. Have to see if he can build on it.

They are only paying him a couple M more than Morales and he's got more upside. If he is even average, he'll still be tradable as he's only 26 now. He's projected for 2 war vs around 0.7 for Morales, making 2m more than Morales, so it's actually not bad at all.

um....that was my point. -4.4 is incredibly good for 1st basemen (I think he was the 3rd highest qualifying). I thought it was skewed because he played some OF last year - but it wasn't. It appears he's an excellent defensive 1st baseman (which I was unaware of). I still find it very odd that he's been relegated to 1st base though (given his youth, speed, etc.).

Definitely. He may have got playing time guarantees there he couldn't get elsewhere though, plus we don't know how much the incentives are yet.

I'd recommend reading Doug Glanvilles book: The Game from Where I Stand: From Batting Practice to the Clubhouse to the Best Breakfast on the Road, an Inside View of a Ballplayer's Life. Really a must-read for any hardcore baseball fan. Enduring, entertaining and informative

 

I bought Lenny Dykstras book during the summer and thoroughly enjoyed it, I think you might like that too. Though it is an autobiography, and not strictly about baseball. Still, the baseball anecdotes are super entertaining.

Ohhh. And funnily enough, I actually just finished Dickeys book. It was surprisingly pretty great. Gained a lot of respect for him as a player. I'd recommend that one as well.

Iannetta went from bad pitch framer to nearly elite and then back to awful, if the latter is his true talent level then maybe he's closer to replacement level than a solid backup catcher. Also of note is that his offense fell off a cliff. He's had a weird career path.

Yeah there's a chance he winds up providing excellent value at $1.5M, but given his career trajectory, it's no guarantee.
