Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 Basically, was a better outcome than what we have now ever a realistic possibility for us?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 Basically, was a better outcome than what we have now ever a realistic possibility for us? What part of 4/80 offered on the table... don't you get? Now rumoured with a 5th year option @ 20?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 Regardless of the 5th year, a guy that wanted to stay in the T dot @ 4/80 seems to be a massive mistake on the EE crew, don't you think?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 I mean every f***ing sports outlet reported the offer. Lets stop pretending. BTS needs a GM comment, but that isn't happening ever. Kizler(sp) f***ed up... the Birds f***ed up... it happens. Basically, was a better outcome than what we have now ever a realistic possibility for us? Well, someone f***ed up, no?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 I lean on the EE crew, they f***ed up. He should've took the glass table offer, especially if he was offered a 5th yr team option at 20.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 Yeah really I'd be good with any combination of 2 of Moss, Bautista, Valbuena, and Carter. I don't see any scenario where Smoak is a starter so I'm not even giving him any consideration. I dunno about Moss... he's been kinda s*** lately. This will probably be unpopular, but I think I'd kinda dig a Pagan signing instead. Don't really need Moss's power, and Pagan's a switch hitter with some speed, some OBP, legit defense and he K's a third of the time Moss does. Actually kinda surprised that the Jays haven't been tied to him at all. Seems like a natural fallback from Fowler. I love Valbuena. Grab Valbuena or Carter for first, throw Pagan in left, suffer another year of Bautista in RF and then re-evalaute a year from now. They can probably find pen pieces anywhere but if they're looking FA, Belisle has been solid for a long time and will probably come cheap. Just grab Belisle and Blevins or something and call it a day. Take a month off and then hope your squadron of senior citizens have enough tape to hold themselves together once spring training rolls around.

The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 Basically, was a better outcome than what we have now ever a realistic possibility for us? There's always a better outcome. We should have kept Syndergarrd. Should have drafted Chris Sale over Deck McGuire. Could have signed Daniel Murphy last offseason. Sign Darvish when he came over from Japan. Maybe throw Chapman and Puig in there too. Maybe while we're at it we should probably draft that Trout kid. Hot damn, look at that team we got!

Players don't make it all of the way to free agency and then not test the market. You know that and so does Shapiro. Had we been patient and circled back with that offer , it's a good possibility that Edwin would be back in Toronto. Had the offer been made in March, I'd be more inclined to place blame on Edwin.

You are obsessed. I'm not sure why you're so convinced that Edwin is better than Morales + Pearce + the draft pick. You never should have expected Edwin to re-sign here, that's the nature of free agency.

Use some common sense. Why did you include Pearce in your list? We signed a DH and then signed Pearce. It would be the same scenario. It's perfectly reasonable to expect a player back when your team is his first choice and he signs for less than what the team is willing to offer. That almost always gets done.

You're playing the what-if game. What if EE signed with Boston like everyone was thinking and the Indians scooped Morales up. I guess we could have ran Smoak out there at DH.
brianf Verified Member Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 I'm not sure why you're so convinced that Edwin is better than Morales + Pearce + the draft pick. Because on paper, EE is a much better player and fit the needs of the club when the off season began. Anything can happen to EE's health, but it can happen to Pearce and Morales ad well. Bottom line is both EE and the FO had a role in how it played out. Here's hoping something happens soon so there is something else to discuss instead of beating the 'old parrot' yet again.

What if EE signed with Boston like everyone was thinking and the Indians scooped Morales up. I guess we could have ran Smoak out there at DH. So what? Sign Beltran, sign Bautista, sign Napoli, sign Trumbo, make a trade. You think those were the only 2 options? Don't be so obtuse.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 Obsessed with what? If we offered 4/80 then the team thinks he is better than Morales too. Use some common sense. Because the delta in salary allowed us to sign Pearce additionally without affecting the bottom line, I would think that's obvious. Also please include the draft pick in your math. We offered him fair market value and he turned it down. The only person you can reasonably blame is his agent.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 Cards and Pujols? It's not reasonable to have that expectation. Pujols signed for much, much more than what the Cardinals offered. That's not even a comparison, lol. Oh Jim. You're so special.

Don't be so obtuse. Oh, I didn't know Beltran was still a free agent. And there's a good chance he doesn't want to play on the Bluejays. Bautista doesn't seem to want to DH. We're already having a hard job bringing him back. Mike Napoli might work. He'd be a worse option then Morales though. And no thanks to giving up a 1st Round pick to sign Mark Trumbo. I'd rather have a guy that can get on base.

Also please include the draft pick in your math. We offered him fair market value and he turned it down. The only person you can reasonably blame is his agent. That's complete and utter horseshit. Shapiro already threw out a payroll number and we have plenty of money to fill all of our needs with or without Encarnacion. Our number 1 need was a good bat that could play outfield. To think that we'd hesitate to pay 6 million to Pearce to address that need is utterly absurd.
brianf Verified Member Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 Oh, I didn't know Beltran was still a free agent. And there's a good chance he doesn't want to play on the Bluejays. Beltran signed a 1 year deal with Houston a couple weeks ago.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 Beltran signed a 1 year deal with Houston a couple weeks ago. Ya, I know. It was meant to be sarcastic.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 Ya, I know. It was meant to be sarcastic. You missed the point anyways. If we had passed on Morales, we could have also used Beltran as a bargaining chip or another option. Edwin's agent had time to explore his market by then, time that he didn't have with Morales.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 Is Beltran at 1/16 (or 17 or 18 or whatever we would have had to pay him) tangibly more appealing than Morales at 3/33?
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 Is Beltran at 1/16 (or 17 or 18 or whatever we would have had to pay him) tangibly more appealing than Morales at 3/33? lmao no how is that even a question

And my point is that if you like a couple different guys at certain price points and one is willing to pull the trigger and the other isn't you sign the guy that's willing to sign. Why risk waiting and possibly ending up neither and then having to sign someone who you don't actually want to sign. Given the information the front office had at the time they made the right choice.
