Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 With the recent departure of Cecil, our bullpen situation suddenly appears a lot more bare. Who do you currently have pencilled into our bullpen slots? What openings do you see and who would you target to fill them?
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 Revolve failed starters until we discover the next Zach Britton or Andrew Miller.
Ultimate Verified Member Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 It all depends on what they are able to add offensively. I'd like to think they can sign one more 10-16 million dollar hitter and one more 6-8 million dollar hitter. But if they are having trouble finding a good match offensively there might be some sense to looking at a big bullpen signing like Melancon instead. My preference would be to address the offense first and try to build a bullpen out of what we have and reclamation projects. ALthough it might be smart to spend a bit of money on one lefty (Boone Logan). Osuna, Grilli, Barnes, Schultz, Tepera etc. isn't a bad starting point at all.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 Locks for the bullpen: Osuna Grilli Barnes Loup Rotating the remaining places between: Schultz Girodo Tepera Dermody Bolsinger Campos If starting doesn't work out add: Biagini Liriano
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 If Biagini and Liriano were in the bullpen I'd be happy with the bullpen, but then we'd have zero SP depth. So I think we need at least one decent, reliable bullpen arm, plus another couple of typical waiver claim players, or failed starter free agents.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 With the money we've saved so far I'd love to sign Chapman, but can't imagine the front office going in for that kind of luxury signing (which isn't necessarily a bad thing). So Logan, Blevins, Feliz or Holland please.
Ehjays Verified Member Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 How about picking up another gem in the rule 5.....I was just reading that the Yanks farm is loaded with guys left unprotected example Tyler Webb- Lefty relievers are always in demand, and the 26-year-old Webb was pretty effective for Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre, pitching to a 3.59 ERA in 72.2 IP while striking out 27.1% of the batters he faced. Brady Lail- Jeffrey Paternostro of Baseball Prospectus had Lail ranked ninth in the Yankees system prior to the 2016 season, so it’s hard to believe he’s completely lost all of his prospect shine even after a rough season in Triple-A. Still just 23, he had a 4.62 ERA in 126.2 IP. Cale Coshow- A big flame-throwing righty who has bounced between the rotation and the pen, Coshow was ranked as the team’s 22nd best prospect by MLB Pipeline before the season. He was dominant for High-A Tampa in 2015 before some mixed results in Double-A this year.

The problem with rule 5 claims is that they have to stay on the roster all year, or you have to offer them back to the original team. If they have a bad stretch you can't send them to AAA. What makes either better than Matt Dermody (for example) who can be called up when required.

If Liriano and Biagini are both in the pen, who's the #5? Not only is there no depth, there's no #5 starter.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 I doubt that Barnes is any sort of lock. Yeah, the way I see it we have: Osuna (lock) Grilli (lock) Biagini (close to a lock) Loup (close to lock) Bolsinger (close to lock) I think these five will be in. If no spot is open in the rotation, I think Biagini is used in relief and not in AAA. Loup has options, but his salary is going to come in at over 1M and he's currently the only established lefty in the pen. Bolsinger is out of options, so he's a near lock to be the long man I think. Last two spots are up for grabs. Barnes, Leone, Girodo, Tepera, Campos and Dermody could all make the opening day. I do think it would be nice to add one more high quality arm to the pen. Even someone like Joaquin Benoit would be nice.

BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 Or a trio of the young arms should do 8-10 starts each, maybe!!! Harris, Greene and the pimp !!!

If we completely fail to get a reliable reliever we could keep Biagini in the bullpen, and try to use him as a longman, to try to up his innings. But if they want him to start next year he should really be starting at AAA this year.

Would you pony up a multi-year deal for a mid-tier reliever like Feliz, Tazawa, or Ziegler or stick to 1 year options like Uehara, Hernandez, or Benoit. I'd love to get Uehara.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 They need to add at minimum 1 reliever and probably 2. No way you can go into the season with Bolsinger, Barnes, Tepera and Loup as 4 of your 7 relievers. Barnes is a good 6th/7th guy to have since he has options and you can shuffle him up and down.

I'd love to get Uehara. I think I'd give Zielger two years. Not sure on the others. Uehara and Benoit are also attractive options. Especially Uehara.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 Chacin could be interesting as a reliever. No idea if he'd be willing to sign as one though. Last year when he wasn't starting, his velocity ticked way up and he put up an xFIP of 3.19 with 11 k/9. With the increased velocity, nasty slider, and good curve, he could be very, very good.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 If he wasn't a failure here last year Storen would be a perfect target. Very good his entire career and one bad year last year with decent peripherals.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 I'm intrigued by Feliz' potential and relative youth. I'd go 2/10, maybe 2/12. Feliz likely could get a 3/18 or 3/21 deal based on his age, upside and the market.

He'll be a good sign wherever he goes.
Key22 Verified Member Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 The Jays offered 3 years to Cecil so it is possible they would offer three years to someone else. This would seem to open the market a little for us.
StroShow Verified Member Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 Osuna, Grilli, Biagini, Barnes, Loup in the pen. I'd target Dunn/Blevins for another lefty and Hochevar/Casilla as another middle relief/setup option, one or both righties could slide Biagini into AAA SP depth.
