Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 Don't mind Cecil as long as the Jays get Jansen. They need another premium arm in the pen. Osuna goes to setup, Jansen closes. Or you just use 2 closers, rotate, so the jays can finish off close games. I actually disagree on a premium arm. I'd rather the kind of money spent on a Jansen be used to add another big bat instead. There's a lot of hype over the premium arms right now, and I feel like this would be the worst possible time to add one.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 You guys can say what you want, Cecil is not the answer. He wasn't reliable in the playoffs either, now we are offering him a 3 year deal. it better be for around $15M total.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 He wasn't reliable in the playoffs either Yeah that 1 hit he's given up in 6 post-season innings now. He was terrible.

Fair enough, He did walk Davis in the WC game at a pretty important spot. We could have easily lost it there Like I said I am not opposed to this, hard to see Cecil totalling 2 WAR in the next 3 years if he is projected to be at 0.3 for 2017

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 I'd go 3/25. I don't think he signs for less than 20 million.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 I'd go 3/25. I don't think he signs for less than 20 million. wow, so you think Cecil is valued at 1 win a year for the next 3 years. What a tough ask.
UWHabs Verified Member Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-2017-free-agent-bargains/ Over the last three years, Cecil’s BB/K/GB rates rank him right up there with the very best relievers in baseball. And it’s not like he’s the Ricky Nolasco of relievers; his 72 ERA- over that span is also quite excellent. He hasn’t put together a healthy, dominant full-season in a couple of years, but he’s had runs in each of them where he’s been as unhittable as anyone, and there’s enough upside there that I think he’s worth betting on. Especially with teams starting to recognize the value of guys who pitch before the ninth inning, Cecil should command a decent paycheck, but he’ll probably still cost less than half of the closers, and it wouldn’t be all that shocking if he out-pitched one or two of them over the next few years. Also, again, no draft pick compensation attached here. For the expected price, I’d happily put Cecil in my bullpen, and if he signs anywhere near the crowdsourced contract, he could be the pitching steal of the winter.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 wow, so you think Cecil is valued at 1 win a year for the next 3 years. What a tough ask. He put up 3.4 total in the three years prior to last year. It doesn't seem all that far fetched.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 Can anyone explain why Cecil's GB% dropped so much last year? Low 50's for 3 years, then 42% last year. SSS? I noticed Loup's dropped from the mid 50's to about 40% last year too. Christ is he ever an enigma. He starts striking out way more and it seemingly makes him worse.

I think Cecil's curve didn't have the bite for half the season so if it's not getting down he's probably not inducing the GBs. Just my first thought.

Just my first thought. Perhaps - didn't affect his K/9 though...and we all know he isn't striking people out on that fastball..

BTS Community Moderator Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 If they're going to pay Cecil 6-7M a year, it would be nice if Gibby uses him appropriately. In terms of terms of game leverage when he enters: 2016 = 5th behind Osuna, Floyd, Benoit, and Grilli 2015 = 4th behind Osuna, Castro, and Lowe 2014 = 6th behind McGowan, Loup, Sanchez, Janssen, Wagner Cecil is pretty inarguably a top-30 reliever in the game, and he should be used to put out fires.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 Come on BTS Castro was on the team for 5 minutes as was lowe. Really unfair comment on Gibby. Cecil was the guy in 2015 behind Osuna and Sanchez

He got hit around with runners on base. Gibbons lost trust of him fairly quickly, and well over half the fanbase hates his guts. http://i.imgur.com/I4Uogjp.png http://i.imgur.com/dD072ww.png

glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 Gibbons was using him in high leverage spots in April, and when Cecil started blowing games, then his usage changed. Gibby lost faith in him.

Remember when he was pulled out of the closet spot one appearance into 2015 so Miguel Castro could gas can a bunch of games? So terrible. I remember it was the second or third game of the year, at Yankee Stadium, and Cecil beaned a hitter and just generally screwed things up. Talk of pulling him as the closer began pretty much immediately and the job went to a kid straight up from A-ball. Has a panic button ever been pressed so hard during the first week of the season as that? Eventually we ended up with Osuna, but the process to get there was like a f***ing Blues Brothers car chase.

For those who don't get the reference: (This was back in practical effects days so they drove through an abandoned mall that they dressed like a working one to get that scene. Just trashed it.)

Blowing games left and right FFS Dogg you forget that he was the best reliever in all of baseball in the 2nd half of 2015. You are talking about a 9.1 inning sample.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 Wasn't Cecil throwing like 5 MPH slower all throughout pre-season and the start of that season though? It was obvious he didn't have it. I think he started out rough in 2015 too, yeah. But they gave Cecil the job after seeing him throw and then after a couple of games pulled the plug. I think they gave the A-ball closer Castro more leash while Cecil still worked in a set-up role. That's a screaming panic in my books, taking the job from a proven rock like Cecil and handing it to someone who never even had a coffee in AA.

He barely had a cup of coffee in full season ball. 28 innings pitched above Vancouver, 1 electric spring training and they gave him the closer role.

Remember when he was pulled out of the closet spot one appearance into 2015 so Miguel Castro could gas can a bunch of games? Yeah you'll get no argument from me that Gibbons doesn't know s*** about using a pen, whether Cecil or anyone else, but he was using Cecil in a high leverage trio with Storen and Osuna to begin the season at the very least....just seemed to lose faith pretty quickly. Gibby definitely uses small sample sizes to determine his faith for whatever reason.
King Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 I think they had the right idea with Osuna and Castro, but it was poorly executed. They identified 2 young SP prospects with power arms and shady medicals/injury history that they didn't think would hold up in an MLB rotation for 200+ innings a year, and made the bullpen move to get all the value out of them they could. We are seeing this now from other teams with Edwin Diaz, Michael Feliz, CJ Edwards, etc.. even Luis Severino to some extent though I don't think the Yankees are done with him as a starter. Teams are skipping the failed starter phase when they don't believe those pitchers have a chance at sticking in the rotation, and heading straight to the "Elite Reliever" part. And it's a very interesting strategy. I wonder if we'll see even more of it in the future. Another incentive for the teams to do it is that they get 3 years of the power reliever at league minimum salary and 6 years of control. There are some Jays prospects that could see the move. Greene has terrible numbers but could see an improvement in a new role as a reliever. SRF has arm problems (will he hold up in an MLB rotation?), and would post absurd numbers as a reliever.
