Are we talking about the Angel Pagan that is arguably better than Josh Reddick and will cost less than half as much?

I don't know that Angel Pagan...

Trade for Miguel Cabrera (Dinger is #1)

1) The Tigers are rebuilding and looking to shed payroll.

2) Cabrera is making $30M per season til age 40 and therefore can probably be had for pretty much just his contract.

3) Time-value of money, or something. Inflation.

4) Miguel Cabrera is really good and I'm way into it.

You underestimate how easily Miguel Cabrera can turn into Albert Pujols or a lesser version of that.

Pagan would be a solid short term option in LF. Other than 2015 he's been a pretty solid player for many years. But age 35 is a negative.

35... with a flyweight bat with bsr and fielding on a heavy decline, he can piss off, well unless we're stuck and need a position filled. This FO needs to aim higher.

Yup think one year option at 8-10 mill and maybe a bigger buyout if we decline the option, consistent he is, can steal a bit and a switch hitter to boot and like I said before might be the perfect mentor for Pompey to learn from too.

And then Upton can be used for a trade for bullpen help or a prospect or my Favorite PTBNL !!!

Nick Markakis? Wtf is wrong with you people? We'd be better off handing the job to Pompey

Agreed!

Why are we dreaming about shopping out of a dumpster after the two seasons we just had, plus the attendance we pulled, plus Rogers???

For some weird reason this is how I read this. I need to sleep more.

Spanky - it appears to me they don't want to trade anyone who is any good. They also don't want to sign anyone who costs any money. AND - they don't want to give up draft picks. They could sign both Pearce and Sean Rodriguez. The former, when he actually plays, seems to be a good player. If you believe in Sean Rodriguez 2016 then you have two guys who can play multiple positions - I don't know why they call them platoons at first - Rodriguez was a better hitter than Smoak facing righties and lefties. So this is my first choice if we're bargain hunting.

Fowler is kind of Reyes 2.0 - we would be going after Fowler for what AA thought we were going to get from Reyes - but the speedy guys - man once they lose the step they become overpriced boat anchors real quick. And then there is our turf to which he probably won't like.

The Jays big problem is there is no pipeline of young stud talent like the seeming endless Boston outfielders. Pompey? Eesh.

PS: This was the article on Markakis http://jaysjournal.com/2016/11/06/blue-jays-could-look-to-atlanta-braves-nick-markakis-for-outfield-help/

Maybe put the money into the pen and add a starter adding to a strength. We're not getting to the playoffs on offense - so may as well ride the strength of the market which is relievers and corner bats. Copy Cleveland - they did well with Rajai freaking Davis!

Okay... you have a coup on the inside? Concerning your outlook, besides some asshat from jaysjournal... and your assumptions? I mean we all assume at this time of year, but you seem defiant. Never put money into the pen, failed starters can take that role along with inside sources. After that... I'm assuming we get better, that's it... I can't reflect on our final product, until it's FINAL. I think I've mentioned Inciarte in the past, the others can eat fat dicks.

What I'm saying is, it's too early to assume we won't spend, be creative with early moves or trade. There's just no need on the 18th of November.

Because spending like drunken sailor isn't' a recipe for success. We don't want to become the Tigers and Angels.

The Tigers recently won 4 consecutive division titles, so spending can certainly work if done wisely.

Yeah, the Tigers didn't make a whole lot of mistakes with their big contracts. Who did they spend big on?

Cabrera - still looks fine

Verlander - still looks fine

Fielder - bad contract, but they fixed it by moving him for Kinsler before he imploded

Sanchez - worked out fine

Upton, V-Mart and Zimmermann aren't looking great though.

I guess I'm just looking at the guys they signed as FA's. Fielder, Upton, Zimmerman, Nathan and V-Mart are all terrible and I suspect they'll soon regret that Miggy deal. You say Sanchez worked out fine...he gave them one GREAT year, one very good year and now he looks like he's done. 3 of the 5 years will be lost in that deal + he has a $5M buyout on his option year.

I don't think their spending has been the reason they won 4 straight division titles (you could argue that signing/keeping their good young players was a key factor, as was stumbling upon JD Martinez, somehow getting Kinsler for Fielder, etc.). It certainly appears their heavy spending may be the reason they struggle to win for the next decade.

I think Sanchez will come in around 8M per win over his deal. We'll see what happens with Upton and Zimmermann, because those look like the only two albatrosses to me. I think they could trade Miggy and Verlander's entire contracts and get a return, and they could probably move the last two years of V-Mart if they eat like 6-8M.
