saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Surely they could eat 75%+ of his contract in a trade somewhere when a team suffers an injury? They signed him 2.5 months ago. I highly doubt they are going to eat any part of his contract if he's traded
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 They may want to legitimately give Smoak a full time role next year. He's never been able to really put it together, but he does have some nice tools. I don't think it's impossible to see him put up 2 WAR in a full season where he's not being jerked all over the place with playing time. It may not be ideal, but if rolling Smoak out there gives us the money to put a stud in another position, so be it. Worst case, if he really bombs, bring up Tellez. If we really wanted to roll the dice, we could probably talk to one of the Texas teams about some of their guys. A guy like Profar as a super utility would be rather interesting, or one of the 1st basemen in Gallo or Singleton could be worth a shot. He's had 3 500 AB seasons with the M's and a couple of 300+ Ab's with us. He's sucked for 5 seasons now. He has a combined war of 0.3 in 824 games.. Just send him down a black hole already
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Pearce on the other hands rocks and fills gap in the outfield/1B and emergency 2B
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 It would be liveable, but ultimately we will still be a 82-84 win team unless we can find the elite bullpen pieces that all the good teams seem to have. Post-2016 was always going to be a bit of a transition. They are losing two of their cornerstone players. Putting the team in a position to be in the 80-85 win range gives them a real chance at a WC spot if they get some breaks, and in the mean time they can build up the farm system to hopefully churn out some talent in the next few years. Shapiro came into a very unique situation but he's handling it really well, in my view.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Oakland A's. If the question is "who is going to value this piece of crap player", the answer is almost always the Oakland A's. Our general manager values him at the money he signed for. He just signed. It's not like he's in year 5 of a 7 year deal and has fallen off a cliff. He's had something like 100 or less at bats since he signed. Nothing should have changed in the way our gm values him now compared to 2 months ago
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 I wonder how long it would take for Shatkins to accept if someone offered to take Smoak's contract on with nothing coming back the other way. They probably call the commissioner's office while still on the phone with the other team. I think they'd eat half the contract just to move him. Unlike other clubs this FO isn't concerned with the public's image of them getting rid of a player they just signed if it makes the team better.

At 28 years old it was fair to add everything up and make a small bet that he could be a power platoon player going forward with some gravy 1B defensive replacement value. The bottom fell out this year though. He never looked good at baseball. Sunk.
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 To sign a free agent this early it typically takes something extra on the expected contract. An extra year, a bit more money, a guaranteed starting job... MLBTR predicted 2/$10 for Pearce. Would you give Steve Pearce 3/$15? Would you give him, say, 2/$13? Keith Law said he would only give Pearce "one or two million." lol

Gary Verified Member Posted November 12, 2016 Author Posted November 12, 2016 So why did our gm sign him to an extension? Insurance policy.
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 So why did our gm sign him to an extension? I dunno. It happened in the middle of July. Maybe they have or had indicators or fancy stats that made it seem like they were buying low. Heck, maybe they DID buy low. A lot of the decision was just about having controllable depth. Having someone, anyone, under contract for subsequent years. It was hard to see the attraction at the time based on public information and a few months later it is even harder. IIRC he was very bad after signing the extension.

Keith Law is one of the most annoying people in baseball.

Ray Verified Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 I say we go all out and trade for Tebow. He can play 1st, right?
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 I would go 3 for 15 or 2 for 13.
Gary Verified Member Posted November 12, 2016 Author Posted November 12, 2016 From Ken Rosenthal: On #BlueJays: Team gave Smoak, a switch-hitter like Morales, 2 yr./$8.5M deal in July. Stands to reason he at least will play 1B vs. RHPs.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 I would go 3 for 15 or 2 for 13. For Pearce. Absolutely. Guy beasts LHP.
Joshtowers Verified Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Don't see any hype in this guy
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Don't see any hype in this guy Why? He hit 136 wRC+ last year, projected to hit 112 wRC+ next year. Can play 1st, 2nd and OF. He's going to sign a cheap, short term contract. There's a lot to like here.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Will he even be ready for the start of the season? Added Risk = Less money ! Think his last contract was under 5 mil was it not, does he require a raise even based on his play? 1 plus a option maybe best move, since we do have the Tellez factor to consider as well ! I would think 4-5 mill max at best, 500,000 mil buyout or a one year deal at 5-6 for him. Both deals I would like him on if a lot less 2-4 is what I am hoping for. Please yes! And then sign Thames.... ASAP!

Smoak's playing time is an inference.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Alford, Pompey, Tellez, Urena, Gurriel could all become major league fixtures in the next two years. Also McGuire, Ramirez As much as I liked Tellez, even before being drafted by the Jays. It seems there's a few reputable guys who aren't so high on his bat against MLB pitching.

Slade Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 I would prefer Valbuena over Pearce.
