Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 I don't know about this one. With the way contracts are turning out 11 mil isn't a big deal but the 3 years for a 33 year isn't my favorite.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 They are not burning $8.5M on a Smoak deal. I cant imgine they would do that. That is a contract that hasn't even kicked in yet.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 How's his D? Is he half decent fielding? I think he's basically a fence post at 1B. This is an inexpensive all-bat signing, really.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 11, 2016 Author Posted November 11, 2016 How's his D? Is he half decent fielding? He's graded out as around average, but he hasn't had more than 51 starts at 1B since 2009. I think he'll lead the team in starts at DH.
King Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 I just turned on MLBTR app "Big Moves" notifications, and everything is instantaneous now. This is game changer.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 This is basically this year's Happ signing. Except with Happ - there was the possibility that the changes/improvements he made in Pitts would carry over and make him a top of the rotation starter. We know what we're getting in Morales. There isn't any upside besides more counting stats in a hitters park and better lineup.

Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Yeah - but his WAR total is suppressed because he was strictly a DH. Guys like Mauer, Dickerson, Napoli, etc. all gained defensive value by playing a position semi-regularly. This looks better. 2015 & 2016, sorted by wRC+ http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=dh&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=y&type=8&season=2016&month=0&season1=2015&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&sort=17,d The biggest issue with Morales is he can't run. Which isn't a problem unless we sign a bunch of speed.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Very low risk, I thought Morales was going to get more. I was comfortable with giving him like $10MM so this is fine, 3 years isn't that bad as well. Very interested to see how Smoak will play into this
UWHabs Verified Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Do you honestly think they view Smoak as a starting player on this contending team? Regardless of what you perceive $4MM to be, they are not stupid and they are aware it's likely burned cash at this point. The flaw is they just gave him that money a few months ago, so it'd be weird to give up on him so quickly after the deal. I don't think they have him written in in pen to the starting lineup, but wouldn't shock me if he was at least pencilled in.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 The agency is Wasserman..they also have Trumbo on the list
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 This signing to me indicates that the market is higher than what we thought. Edwin could probably end up with 5/125 that he is looking for.
SweetSmellingChacin Verified Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 EEs going to one of the Texas teams I'd guess.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Shapiro and his 2 cheap 1B deals.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Don't like Morales. Its not a huge financial commitment. But he's strictly a DH who can't run the bases at all. He better hit the s*** out of the ball.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Now if you can add both Reddick and Bautista as mentioned in the other thread, you potentially have a perfect offence with Bautista and Morales splitting 1B/DH Bautista occasional OF if we need and Reddick being in there at other times. Upton Donaldson Bautista Morales Tulo Reddick Martin Travis Pillar.
SweetSmellingChacin Verified Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Boston I think they will go 4-5 years to get him.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Mike Napoli hit cleanup for Cleveland last year and they were a very good team. Morales is a switch hitting Mike Napoli who doesn't strike out as much. I'm going to reserve judgement until I see how the rest of the offseason plays out.

Smoak hasn't started more than 80 games in a season in 4 years... he was never extended to be a starting replacement. It was just a terrible decision and they have to live with it. At this point Smoak's role is an overpaid bench player with some backup 1B skills. There will be someone else, there has to be.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Jays sign Morales on a 3 year deal

If Bautista's knee didn't heal up and we kept him, would we see him getting gunned by 10 & 20 feet repeatedly???
SweetSmellingChacin Verified Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 There`s a 0.0000000000000000000000001% chance they spend close to 40 million on (3) 1B-DH`s in EE, Morales, Smoak. This is the EE replacement.

This is the EE replacement. I think so too. I don't think they'll want to commit to using one of Morales and Edwin at 1B every day for the next three years. I expect a full-time 1B to be acquired now, for cheaper than Edwin. Probably also means Beltran and Holliday are out, as they're more DH types.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 One thing is becoming evident. Unlike with AA - there seems to be a lot more behind the "rumours" you hear with Shatkins in charge...Is Reddick next?
