Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 With 1-1.5 Win players you shouldn't be paying close to market value for a Win since below average players are easy to find. So Even if he puts up 4 WAR over 3 years I think thats still a bad signing. Sure below average players are easy to find, but the point remains determining how efficient this signing is going to be is by looking at the market for what other players are going to be getting. If teams are going to be paying for wins at a significantly higher rate than what Morales is earning, (which is going to be highly likely) it's a good decision by the FO. If you say he puts up 4 WAR in 3 years it's absolutely a good signing, he earned his contract and then some.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 We got Albert Pujols for $10MM We didn't get him yet!
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 I cant see Jays retaining EE after and if they sign Morales. The reason is Smoak. You cant have 3 DH/1B types, they gave that money to Smoak already, no way they are going to have him sit in Buffalo for $5Mil.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 see Ricky Romero Ricky Romero only spoiled in Buffalo after failing for two years. Smoak hasn't failed yet, he is exactly the same as he always was. A full year or two of Smoak is needed before you can justify him spending a career in the minors.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Actually in video games players have interest levels and if its low you probably won't sign the guy. It can actually go lower if you lowball him as well. I also don't think Steve Pearce would be against signing here. He would have at-bats at 1B, 2B, and a corner Outfield spot. Who knows about Travis status either! Sorry - I'm old. When I quit playing, this wasn't yet a feature.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Honestly people need to get real. EE/Morales/Smoak cannot be on the same roster, and Smoak will 100% start and maybe spend the whole year at the MLB level. That is just the way it is. A Morales signing sure closes the door on EE, I am guessing the fact that we are so interested is that the team has already moved on from EE. Maybe EE has a huge offer from Houston.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 11, 2016 Author Posted November 11, 2016 Morales wRC+ by year: 136 128 119 119 72 130 110 I have no idea what happened in 2014, but you can probably pencil him in somewhere as a 110-120 wRC+ guy, and he's a switch hitter with no platoon split, which is nice. Three years makes me uneasy, but as a DH who can handle 1B with some consistency, and the OF in a pinch, he improves the team. Especially given the in-house options.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Done deal. 3/33 Shatkins getting stuff done early again. Probably smart.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Its a done deal per MLBTR. Do not like at all.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Huge Downgrade going from big bats like EE and Bautista to the likes of Morales.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 This is basically this year's Happ signing.

Does he need to strike out at a 40% to be considered a failed year? Realistically I think they saw Smoak's 139 wRC+ of May and prematurely extended him. His agent probably deserves credit for it.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 11, 2016 Author Posted November 11, 2016 This is basically this year's Happ signing. Yup, this is not sexy at all, but 1B and DH were completely open, and he can hit.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Morales>Bautista. lol get the f*** out of here, Bautista is a superior bat to Morales in every way.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Meh, I'm not so sure. Look at the DH numbers last year http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=dh&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=y&type=8&season=2016&month=0&season1=2016&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0 Morales was dead last and Yeah - but his WAR total is suppressed because he was strictly a DH. Guys like Mauer, Dickerson, Napoli, etc. all gained defensive value by playing a position semi-regularly. This looks better. 2015 & 2016, sorted by wRC+ http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=dh&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=y&type=8&season=2016&month=0&season1=2015&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&sort=17,d The biggest issue with Morales is he can't run.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Bautista still had the worst year of his career full of injuries and still WRC 122 and OBP over .360 that is better than Morales entire career. Only an idiot would say Morales is better than Bautista.
jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 lol get the f*** out of here, Bautista is a superior bat to Morales in every way. Oh... we're not talking money as well? f*** Bautista.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Morales 3/33M + draft pick is good deal
Governator Community Moderator Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Honestly people need to get real. Do you honestly think they view Smoak as a starting player on this contending team? Regardless of what you perceive $4MM to be, they are not stupid and they are aware it's likely burned cash at this point.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 11, 2016 Author Posted November 11, 2016 2014 was that weird year where he sat out half the season and all that. Maybe that affected him. Yeah, and projections are factoring in his performance that year, when it probably isn't valuable data.
