Also,

How the hell did Thames steal 40 bases in 2015?

Yeah I concluded that catchers in KBO must just be really freaking terrible. Perhaps base stealing isn't a big part of the game over there and as a result pitchers don't make use of slide steps or have good pickoff moves.

Yeah but even then I don't think it's an issue. Whatever he's doing now, he was probably doing back then. He was jacked then and he's still jacked now. The thing is being jacked alone isn't some magic formula for success. Plenty of PED users suck. The premise that because he sucked in the MLB, he must have been clean then and only be dirty now is a faulty won. He was a young player with upside. He's probably made some legitimate improvements (though he'd have to come back to MLB to get a better measure of that). Also, the assumption that drug testing is weaker in Korea than it is in MLB doesn't seem fact based either. We know that MLB test can be beat. Plenty of know drug users never tested positive. The MLB test are not necessarily harder to beat than the Korean ones (unless you're taking turinabol in which case you need to switch it up or you'll end up like all the players who got caught this year because they were behind on the testing).

I give. His 2011 wRC+ 141 in AAA. He always had some offensive talent. His small sample size stints here never translated into much...and if I remember correctly he sucked in the OF. SEA also busted on him.

I'd love to see him get another shot. He was always a muscular guy, although now he looks decidedly hug-er.

I think he's been moved to 1B in Korea but could be wrong. He's listed as an infielder on their team pages.

Hey Big C ... Thought I saw he was playing more as or at First now, then in the field!

If true, for the money and as a flyer would seem a good fit. Plus if he can really steal bases now too, win win

1B or OF. Who cares. You would still fight him BBBB.

Whew Thanks Gov thought after I wrote what I did I might have dreaming it was true !

So A LH power bat, at first, under 8 mill per season and may be able to steal bases now too!

How do we NOT sign him? That would be the better question!

Perfect comp for Thames: Khris Davis. He's black, he's jacked, and he's a one-dimensional slugger with a noodle arm in LF.

Wait... Thames is Black !!!

But he can Steal bases now... Soo they are different, right???

Thames' fans like myself are still waiting for any confirmation that he'll be coming back to the big leagues. His contract is up in the KBO. He made just $1.5M last year, so a massive pay raise would be the biggest draw for Thames. Last year the Twins guaranteed $12M to Park, but it was a bit of a weird contract with that money being spread across four years. Kang signed an almost identical contract the year prior for $11M with Pittsburgh. If Thames would sign for something similar then a dozen MLB teams will be trying to woo him. Thames is an exotic superstar in the KBO though and he could probably make a similar AAV to that by staying in Korea, so I think he'll want a higher AAV on his MLB contract and perhaps a shorter term, so he can get to the MLB arbitration stage quicker and be in a stronger negotiating position more quickly.

Really strong analysis, NJH. Thames gets one less year and a higher AAV + total contract than those guys.

Pretty cheap, the term is meh, but for 5 AAV quite worth it.

Beyond the baseball learning curve, Thames knew that his move to Korea would come with a pretty major lifestyle shift. As a well-built, 6-foot black man with a thick beard, Thames stands out "like a sore thumb" around town. Asian baseball fans are known for their intensity, and given how easy Thames is to identify, there's no escaping the celebrity that comes with emerging as one of the greatest players in recent KBO history.

"It's kind of hard to blend in," Thames allowed, but he's leaning into the weirdness; he says his next goal is to be in a Korean commercial for "some deodorant or something." He has no choice but to embrace it, to some extent—he's that famous, and Korea's fans don't care much for boundaries. "I remember I was on a date," Thames said. "And I was making out with this girl outside my apartment. And this fan came up and tapped me on the shoulder and asked for an autograph. Like, dude, what are you doing? There's no privacy here. I could be eating dinner. I could have a burrito in my hand, eating, and someone will want to walk up and shake my hand or ask for a picture."

From Barry Davis: A source tells me that Eric Thames had a number of MLB options but the #BlueJays were not one of them. They didn't show any interest

Weird. A Thames pickup would have seemed like just the shrewd signing Shapiro/Atkins have shown to do.

It's possible the competitive window on this core is closing. As much as I am fascinated by Thames I also don't blame the FO for not wanting to offer money on such a wild card (if that was the rationale, who knows). Maybe they're pretty confident some larger money deals get done for known commodities.

I mean, if we sign Fowler, I'll be happy, but, but from most interviews they seem to be super risk-averse to both long term deals and dealing prospects, which lowers the chances of us getting anyone decent this off-season.

I said we should take a flyer on him, but I must admit he signed for more than I thought he would. There were a few people who suggested a flyer on thames...most on here mocked that idea though.

Steve Pearce is awful and literally crying on the bench because he's so bad.

Eric Thames in a different city is everything his mom thought he would be and more.

Steamer Gods hate the Blue Jays

Why don't I work in baseball? Surely some front office has a need for a wordy smartass with no technical skills aside from phrase-turning and estate planning.
