Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2016 Posted October 26, 2016 He's not a utility player anymore, he played 1200 innings at 3B last year and 1 inning at 1B. Is there a case to be made that versatile, good players (Bryant, Zobrist, etc.) who play that sort of start/utility role are more valuable to a team than a guy who's stuck at one position? With more new-age managers in the game, I would think players might market themselves as being more valuable to an organization because they can play multiple positions.

I agree with you, but in the context of this discussion, Turner isn't likely interested in signing with a team that already has JD, and the money it would likely cost to get him to play 1B primarily will be prohibitive, because you're still paying for his high-end 3B defense.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2016 Posted October 26, 2016 lol... some 'yo bro' is scrolling down and down on his phone right now looking for some microposts to read... I don't follow? Oh... nvm... I get it.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2016 Posted October 26, 2016 Sorry but most of these guys shouldn't even be in the same breath when trying to compare players of the same calibre to JD... just because they had big contracts doesn't mean they were worth the risk to sign. Fair enough - but there are comparable ones in Pujols, Mauer, D.Wright & Griffey Jr. You could even argue Crawford (coming off 5.9 and 7.7 WAR years), Ellsbury (who had a 9.4 WAR year and was coming off a 5.6 WAR year) and Kemp (coming off a 8.3 WAR year) are close. Ironically, the best comparisons all completely fell off a cliff almost the day they signed the massive deal...

AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2016 Posted October 26, 2016 Nothing about upton and smoak should make you "awfully glad" Depends on the replacement level players. If you're satisfied with Casey Kotchman at 1st and Junior Lake in OF, then no need for those guys.

I believe his $90MM contract covered ages 29-35 but he still did a 7 WAR season when he was 36. Even late in his career he was still a well above average bat which would have worked more in his favour if his team had a DH option.

There are examples of one's that worked out too...don't get me wrong. Seems to be a lot more that didn't...even from guys who were at JDs level when they signed.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2016 Posted October 26, 2016 Under no circumstance do you give him a contract of that magnitude. You either make the decision to play it out or trade him. I feel they will play it out as they are unlikely to save any money at this point regardless.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2016 Posted October 26, 2016 Would like to see another year of 3B of the future before considering signing JD. And if that future 3B is doing well at Lansing by the AS break 2017, and the team is middling around .500 as I expect, trading JD has to be option 1.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2016 Posted October 26, 2016 Vladdy or Bichette... c'mon man, they're years away. Baseball america had age 20 for Vlad, whats that 2019? If Vlad is still looking like the real deal mid 2017, do you sign JD to a multi year potentially immovable contract that will block Vlad at 3B or do you trade JD for young assets with huge surplus value potential?

That's being generous... 20' minimum, also can he stick at 3rd? Remains to be seen, this all remains to be seen, actually.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2016 Posted October 26, 2016 Jesus Christ. What? Teams don't look at few years down the horizon? Of course they are optimizing decisions based on talent on the farm, trade offers, salary demands, etc etc

Not even sure if I am bothering with this. What a dumbass. Stick to pavement Jim.

I think Vlad Jr. ripping up Lansing as an 18 year old would have no consideration what they do with JD. Talk when he starts tearing up AA. You're a dumbass.
King Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2016 Posted October 26, 2016 Has there ever been a case of a team trading a franchise cornerstone MVP 3B due to a player tearing up Low A?

Talk when he starts tearing up AA. You're a dumbass. Here are the options: 1) Extend JD for max $$ for 7-8 yrs (you know he will accept nothing less) 2) Let him walk as a FA 3) Trade him for controllable assets There are so many considerations here. Budget - tying down the budget to a limited # of players (Martin, Tulo, JD, EE?) leaving insufficient $$ to field a team without significant holes. Risk that Tulo range will decline and he needs to be moved to 3B? Vlad's prospect grade (A prospect? - anticipated elite, AS level)? Shatkins is going to consider all this and other things we don't know about (JD medical reports), and yes, potential JD replacements including from the farm when making a decision. They wouldnt be doing their job if they didnt.
