IMO the 3 biggest keys to the season:

Starting pitching health

The 5 starters have the potential to be one of the best rotations in baseball.

However, the depth isn't very good, and the likely 6th starter (Floyd) is the most injury prone of them all.

Whether Bautista has a good season

Last year couldn't have gone much worse for Jose. This year he's the only outfielder who could potentially have elite value with the bat.

A 140 wRC+, >4 WAR season would go a long way to keeping the Jays in the playoff hunt. Conversely a repeat of last year = one of the worst outfield offences in baseball.

Josh Donaldson's health

By far our best player has just had two MVP caliber seasons. JD missing >20 games would potentially be devastating to the Jays playoff chances.

Anyone got a different top 3?

You could make an argument for the performance of the bullpen, but it's easy to acquire relievers mid season.

Just missing out for me was the success of Pearce. An injury free season where he plays >125 games hopefully = much better production than a Pearce / Smoak platoon at 1B.

I think the most important is Russell Martin. If he goes down the drop off in performance from him to Salty/Jiminez is massive considering all he does behind the plate.

As long as the performance is good and he doesn't bother other guys on the team and as long as Gibby can manage him I don't care

I'd prefer a SP who was overconfident (M Stroman) then underconfident (R Romero)

Guys, I think Marcus Stroman might be an idiot.

As long as he can pitch good i could give a f*** what his intellectual level is at.

He's probably one of the smarter athletes tbh, went to Duke. You have guys coming out of HS who have no education.

Hockey players are some of the dumbest people I've seen. They're all basically straight out of HS and barely even got through that.

Ughh, hockey players give literally the worst sports interviews I've ever seen.

When I interned for the 76ers/Flyers we did our fair share of on camera interviews and the problem we had with the hockey players is that for some English wasn't their first language. Two of them had another player interpret for them and then they would craft how to say it in English for the camera so the less words to remember the better. They didn't want to mess something up and sound stupid. They also didn't seem comfortable on camera (almost a 180 from the basketball players).

Thanks for that insight, but I wouldn't really include those types of players in my criticism since it's not their fault. I'm mostly holding the dumb Canadian meathead players who can barely string together 3 words, accountable for that issue.

Removing pointless interviews from sports culture would eliminate a number of the issues...

So we have 5 locks for the pen: Osuna, Grilli, Smith, Loup, Howell. Who takes the last two spots? Apparent candidates:

Joe Biagini - has options

Ryan tepera - has options

Danny barnes - has options

Matt Dermody - has options

Chad Girodo - has options

Glenn Sparkman - has to be retained on 25-man or offered back to KC

Brett Oberholtzer - no options

Mike Bolsinger - no options

Jeff Beliveau - no options

Bo Schultz - no options

Gavin Floyd - on MiLB deal

Lucas Harrell - on MiLB deal

T.J. House on MiLB deal

Assuming they pitch well, the most likely choices are probably Bolsinger and Sparkman.

That's quite a big assumption though - Bolsinger isn't very good and Sparkman has never pitched above AA.

It's a difficult decision, if either start in the bullpen at what point do you give up on them if they start the season badly? What if someone like House or Barnes looks really good in spring training while one or both suck (even though it's a small sample size)?

I don't like handing out a roster spot to Bolsinger just because we might lose him if we don't. Similar to how I have no issue with Goins not making the team, even though he'll likely not make it though waivers, and we'll probably need another infielder at some point in the season.

Unless Bolsinger impresses, risk losing him and get insurance by signing a couple of longmen on minor league deals who do have options.

Loup has an option left I think so he may not be a lock.

If Biagini starts in AAA: Osuna, Grilli, Howell, Smith, Floyd, Bolsinger, Sparkman

If Biagini starts in the bigs: Osuna, Grilli, Howell, Smith, Biagini, Bolsinger, Sparkman

I'd be pretty surprised if they option Loup. He's only the second lefty in the pen, and I think he's better than guys like Floyd and Bolsinger on a per-batter basis. Maybe not a lock, but I don't think they should option him, and I'd be surprised if they do.

It seems like Aaron Loup gets no respect.

When he hits free agency and gets $15M it will be funny.

Bolsinger's pretty good though, and he's more useful to the team because he's got the ability to be an effective swingman.

What is it that you like about Bolsinger? I'll admit to not seeing him much, but he's never impressed me when I have watched him pitch. His stats don't jump out as anything to write home about either.
