burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 Wouldn't surprise me. Not sure it's priority with four years of control remaining, but Shapiro has a history of signing players to team friendly deals during their arb years. If he has the season he's projected for his price only skyrockets. Plus maybe you can get him now since he's only made league min. up until this point. Once players start to getting Millions in Arb. they're already well off enough they can just wait it out.

He said in an interview he lost a lot of the weight he gained last year so he probably isn't much heavier now than he was going into Spring last year.
wamco Verified Member Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 Well, my math skills are limited and my data-processing skills are essentially nonexistent. The younger guys are way, way beyond me in those areas. I’m fine with that, and I don’t struggle against it, and I hope that I don’t deny them credit for what they can do that I can’t. But because that is true, I ASSUMED that these were complex, nuanced, sophisticated systems. I never really looked; I just assumed that the details were out of my depth. But sometime in the last year I was doing some research that relied on these WAR systems, so I took a look at them, and ... they’re not very impressive. They’re not well thought through; they haven’t made a convincing effort to address many of the inherent difficulties that the undertaking presents. They tend to get so far into the data, throw up their arms and make a wild guess. I don’t know if I’m going to get the time to do better of it, or if it will be left to others, but ... we’re not at anything like an end point here. I assumed that these systems were a lot better than they actually are.

I heard he took it one step further and has put on another 35lbs of muscle this off season.

However things like scepticism are developed through education, a rare occurrence among these lots.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Trusted completely and without a shred of scepticism. Hardly. If they were, we wouldn't be talking about catcher framing not being included, or things like spin rates. However, the systems are currently the best we have at (most) of our disposals, and far better than our own intuition.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Well, it was a bill James quote so I hope he doesn't too upset by "spanky" calling him a f***ing idiot. Already read the article from a year or so back... Bill James knows it's a good overall value as a whole, but questions the nuances that every one and their sister has already brought up and stated(on this forum) in certain criteria of evaluating a player, outside that realm. You're an idiot.
wamco Verified Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Me and Bill James, I'll take it. Have a nice night.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 You're better off just taking what you know of the components into account and reaching your own conclusion. Wamco's gripes here are legitimate. Wasn't this already rectified in the past? Regarding nuances that is, or do you have your own new WAR number, North? I'm intrigued.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Why don't you respond to others on here? Take that, meat? Ask away... lol. You might get some "scepticism" from Realdogg. Let it go man, im not the reason for your problems You got it hard so does everyone else. Life is life it falls on the just and the unjust the same. Goodnight
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 There are always going to be issues with mashing numbers with different characteristics together, as well as defining value and how far a player's influence extends. You guys know how players contribute and how good they are at different things, just use that to define value yourself. Pretending that specific WAR outputs are all-answering is silly. I've always understood that part of it, from you guys, but... what's the best stat that values a player individually. Should we NOW chuck WAR out the door, because there's a few robots on this forum, such as yourself. Plus, you get better evaluations, than any of us, right? What's the right thing to look at, et al?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 You don't need a single stat. Just keep doing what you're doing (looking at Fangraphs pages) while thinking critically. So like FIP beaters using RA9, etc... as an example?
King Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 So like FIP beaters using RA9, etc... as an example? He's saying don't use a single stat like WAR to draw a conclusion. There is plenty of information, all of which should be looked into, to form an opinion. You're asking whats the best single stat to evaluate a player. The best way is to use all the information available to you to form an opinion.

I was right about the nuances and what I look for, as do you, I'm sure. I think we should ask wamco, don't you think?

Hitting with runners in scoring position for hitters Men left on base for pitchers
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Thank you, North. Much appreciated.
BTS Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2017 Author Posted January 16, 2017 Bautista signing fills a big hole in the roster. I'd love to hear Shapiro say he's going to play 1B, but he's probably going to be in RF. Remaining areas that could use upgrades: - backup catcher (AJ Jimenez currently slotted in) - one or two arms for the bullpen - another player who can play the OF I don't think anyone wants to enter the season with an OF that has a 3-4-5 of Upton, Carrera, and Pompey. Moss or Pagan for LF, Upton as the 4th OF, and Carrera as the 5th OF, with pompey as depth in AAA would really finish up the lineup.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 I am totally with Russell on this decision. For one thing, he's probably a better shortstop than any other Team Canada options. But also, it's an exhibition tourny and the Jays don't need him taking any extra abuse behind the plate before the season starts.

I guess in terms of winning what matters to the team is: is the drop in quality bigger if they use someone else at SS or someone else at catcher. Ie. Who will catch now?? Realistically he's a star player and he'll get to play where he wants
Governator Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Wow kind of surprised to see the FO actually pushed that offer.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 That is huge. And probably too much to give at this point.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Thank God that deal wasn't made
