Ray Verified Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 We had Saunders and Bautista out there this season. In the grand scheme of things it'll be fine. Plus there's ways around it. Rotate Pearce and Bautista between 1B and RF.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 NEW YORK METS TRADE RUMORS: FRONT OFFICE REGRETS PICKING UP JAY BRUCE OPTION Link: http://www.inquisitr.com/3859293/new-york-mets-trade-rumors-front-office-regrets-picking-up-jay-bruce-option/ Of course they do, because its Jay f***ing Bruce. Nows the time to strike if they want a Liriano type deal for Bruce. Smoak for Bruce + 1 or 2 prospects. We'll take the salary. Then sign Bautista and you're golden. Smoak for Bruce and Nimmo. Sign Valbeuna and collect the 1st rounder for Jose
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 Smoak and Bruce are so similar right now. Both guys were signed as overpaid security blankets and both contracts turned into a complete waste when the market on bat first players completely cratered. Chris Carter and Jose Bautista are much better players and neither even has a job.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 (edited) Smoak is a sunk cost. If he's a stumbling block for a genuine upgrade then I'm really disappointed. They're letting the Smoak problem just compound itself to hurt 2017. They extended him to avoid being frozen out of 1B bidding wars, but there are no bidding wars and upgrades are/were everywhere (Bautista, Carter, EE, Moss, Napoli) Edited January 7, 2017 by intentional wok
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 Smoak is a sunk cost. If he's a stumbling block for a genuine upgrade then I'm really disappointed. They're letting the Smoak problem just compound itself to hurt 2017. They extended him to avoid being frozen out of 1B bidding wars, but there are no bidding wars and upgrades are/were everywhere (Bautista, Carter, EE, Moss, Napoli) This is a really good point. They were worried that EE wouldn't come back, and that they'd be forced to pay over the odds for a 1B if Smoak left too. So they secured Smoak early. 2 things have changed since then: Smoak has gone from average to DFA standard since signing his contract; the 1B market never took off, it'd be easy to get another 1B even now.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 Smoak wastes a 25 man spot by being only a 1B, not good enough to start every day, and not good enough to DH. IMO that's more harmful than throwing away $4m for 2 years.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 Hard pass on Brandon Nimmo. Why? He's a solid prospect, walks, doesn't strike out a lot, and should play above average defense. He'll probably be more of an average big leaguer rather than a star, but that's okay.
Ziggyy108 Verified Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 I would take Bruce + a prospect for Smoak
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 Mets would just as easily give the Jays 4 Mil then give up a roster space for a below average first baseman who cant be optioned
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 I hate Bruce more than anyone Average bat with horrible D but even I would agree with a move that would bring a prospect back and get rid of that lug Smoak
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 I would take Bruce + a prospect for Smoak I'd probably do Bruce for Smoak straight up. You'd be getting Bruce for just under 9M this year, plus saving Smoak's 4M next year.
wamco Verified Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 Aren't Flores and Duda still on the mets for 1b ?
Ray Verified Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 They did lose James Loney at 1B, and he's pretty comparable to Smoak. Except Smoak is a switch hitter. I can see the Mets taking him for depth.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 Smoak for Bruce would be a good deal. At least Bruce can actually hit RHP.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 I'd probably do Bruce for Smoak straight up. You'd be getting Bruce for just under 9M this year, plus saving Smoak's 4M next year. Same. Bruce is actually a useful lefty bat who can play the OF (albeit, very poorly). Much more useful to this team than Justin Smoak.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 You guys wanna add a horrible defender who is making more money than the guy you're trading? I'd rather roll with Carrera
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 Jays should just wait until 25 man rosters have to be set and make a trade then
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 You guys wanna add a horrible defender who is making more money than the guy you're trading? I'd rather roll with Carrera Ya, Bruce is trash IMO. 30 HR and not much else.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 I don't want Bruce under any circumstance I can think of. If they're giving him away maybe he's worth a look as a last resort. But in no way should they get him, a couple relievers (not the ones who signed) and think they had a successful offseason. It's been pretty pathetic since the season ended, other than the Gurriel signing.
rydermike Verified Member Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 Aren't Flores and Duda still on the mets for 1b ? Yes, Smoak would be redundant for the Mets, but Bruce is already redundant for the Mets too. Logic would be take the cheaper useless piece, I guess. Smoak at 4+4 may be easier to swallow on their payroll than Bruce at 13+0. It's +9 savings this year and -4 next year, but even if they have to hold Smoaky all year, they may be able to sneak him into a deal next offseason as a salary offload since $4 million is a bit easier to sneak into a deal. It's hard for a team to absorb $13, but $4 is doable.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 If they have to take Smoak for 2 years the difference is just 5 Mil.

Ian Hunter @BlueJayHunter Brunt when asked whether these developments could be Bautista-related or other - "I would say other".

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 That's really vague. Could mean a small signing, could mean a big trade.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 That's really vague. Could mean a small signing, could mean a big trade. I kinda hope it's both. Valbuena is the small signing and Blackmon or Puig is the big trade
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 They're gearing up to sign Joe Inglett to a minor league deal I've had it with the Inglett/Mike McCoy era
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Stroman for Dahl pls. That's the type of guy I'd consider moving Stro for...although I'd prefer to keep Stro personally.
