Reports said that they died on impact.

That's honestly kind of comforting. I know what CSJ means. At least he went quickly and hopefully painlessly.

That's so crazy to me. Three guys in the prime of their life out enjoying themselves, and then the lights go out and they're gone without any idea what happened. Life is so fragile.

Dream up what you like, that's horrific, the boat landed cap-side on the other side of the jetty, in layman terms, bodies hit the rock and ended up in water?

I don't think what I said was impossible...I was just suggesting IF that is what happened it would be one scary way to go not making light of the situation

Dam right.

People who say boating at 3AM is ridiculous hasn't spent too much time on the water it happens quite often esp if your a big fisherman etc....full speed is a bit silly but crashing in the water at any speed is usually trouble

What a weird day for sports. Extremely sad news about Jose and the CFL player who died as well as the passing of golf legend Arnold Palmer, yet Vin Scully had such a Hollywood Ending.

My grandfather is devastated by the news about Arnold Palmer, his idol as a youngster. It hurt me to hear his voice on the phone after I told him.

Reminds me of the sad day both Stan Musial and Earl Weaver died. The difference is that both of those men were of old age so there is solace in that. Dying young like Jose is a tragedy.

f*** man, known about this for almost 2 days now and it's still hurting. Losing a guy like this with his personality and talent is heartbreaking. The Casey McGehee interview and Ortiz video is hard man.

I know it's not right to bring up the money. But that kid was going to make 200m in his career. I'm not sure if he's made 5 million dollars yet. 5 million is a lot of money, but when you take half of that away for tax and agent fee's, then consider his currents expenditures, that doesn't leave much, perhaps a million of so. Apparently he has a child on the way, his grandmother and mother, which I assume he was supporting. Just tragic.

I was thinking about this too. Obviously the family is stricken with grief over the loss of their kin, but it's also pretty tragic to think about all the money he would have made and how it would have supported his entire family for generations. They were counting on that, and now it's gone.

I don't expect money to be an issue for the family, though they definitely aren't going to see nearly as much as they could have. They'll be taken care of either officially or unofficially. Maybe someone like TheHurl or another person who has a pretty good knowledge of the CBA can chime in. But it just seems natural to have some kind of standard life insurance policy.

I mean, even us working class slobs who have family members in unions get some decent pensions in these types of scenarios. I would expect it moreso from the MLBPA.

Isn't she pregnant with his child too? I thought I heard that.

Yup, that's really sad.

If she sends him to play baseball, everyone is going to scout him.

I think they said the baby is supposed to be a girl.

Though with Jose Fernandez genetics, maybe she'll be able to throw 99 and become the first female MLB player!

I doubt he had any sort of a decent pension. MLB has life insurance policies, but I was listening to Lebatard this morning and he was saying there are a lot of stipulations on that life insurance and the family may never see a dime (most likely alcohol involved, speed, no life jackets).

He was also mentioning how his agent had refused HUGE contract offers from the Marlins, which in hindsight is tough to take.

MLB has the best and most expansive pension program in baseball. A single day on a big league roster gets you lifetime healthcare. 43 days gets you $34,000 annually.

Does anyone else think that MLB should waive their 10-year HOF minimum for him? Second best starters ERA- of all time, and best FIP-.

I could be convinced that they should. I don't believe for a second that they will.

What is the 10-year HOF minimum? I googled it but all that came up was the 10-year writing requirement for writers to become eligible to vote.

EDIT: Oh I see now, players must have played 10 years in the big to be eligible.
