sawyerford Verified Member Posted August 29, 2016 Author Posted August 29, 2016 So.. Does anyone know if Barry actually has real sources? Or is he just pulling this out of his ass
mikebel111 Verified Member Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 I doubt he has sources. Just reaching out for something and thinking it sticks
FrozenRopes Verified Member Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 Believable, but not happening.

Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 I'm sure they did ask for Sanchez and it likely made for a short conversation. We've been pretty lucky to have added two veteran superstar position players over the past couple seasons, maybe I'm wrong but Votto just seems like wishful thinking.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 Can this Votto rumor just die already? There's no way this front office would try to acquire him except as a salary dump. And the reds won't see him as a salary dump until his skill declines to a point where he wouldn't even be worth his salary.

I would seriously consider that if they cover the remaining 175M of Votto's contract.

BTS Community Moderator Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 Reporting this story without any financial details of the negotiation is just irresponsible. Votto isn't worth much of anything if they don't cover anything, but Votto + $40M for Sanchez becomes a pretty reasonable ask.

That trade is impossible in August since Sanchez would never clear waivers.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 That trade is impossible in August since Sanchez would never clear waivers. And not even worth it from a trade standpoint unless the Reds pay the whole contract.....which isn't happening.

Yes, the only way it's worth trading Sanchez for Votto is if the Reds cover the entire contract. That's "I wouldn't trade Hoffman for anyone but Trout" bad.

Lmao that's actually plausible But seriously, I don't think it's a big stretch if the Reds agree to eat a lot of Votto's salary, people are acting like Votto isn't good or something. He's arguably been top 3 batter in the NL after the all-star break and can play great defence at first base. His contract is the only thing unattractive about him but if the Reds take a lot of the remaining amount then you're literally getting a possible MVP candidate on a favourable contract, and that's not cheap at all. That's also why he won't get moved now, he'll get moved in the offseason instead
metafour Verified Member Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 His contract is the only thing unattractive about him He turns 33 in like a week. There is nothing attractive about trading a 22 year old starter who is already among the best pitchers in the game for a 33 year old first baseman.

It doesn't make sense for us. I'm saying from their it's not crazy to ask for a young bright player for a current MVP candidate.

He's a pitcher under team control for 4 more years. He's probably more likely to break over the next 4 years than Votto is. I think there's absolutely a price point at which Votto is the more desirable asset, it's just not $175M.
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 Votto continues to routinely put up +.400 OBP Votto is 33, but shows no sign of aging. We are going to need a 1B, as Encarnacion is likely leaving us, and Smoak, well...you know. Votto averages about 5 WAR per season, which makes a $25 million salary acceptable - over the next four years. Not sure I want to pay that for his age 37-40 seasons. We only have Sanchez for four more years, and his salary is going to go up a lot, after he hits arbitration. And pitchers are a lot more fragile. I'd probably do the deal if the Reds kicked in $40 million to offset his end-of-contract decline. Or if they kicked in prospects worth about the same.
metafour Verified Member Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 Votto is 33, but shows no sign of aging. You mean like Jose Bautista? Maybe he's David Ortiz... or more realistically he's got 2-3 more years before noticeable decline. Young starter who will likely only get even better > aging bat at a non premium position.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 I guess Barry forgot to make up that part of his report. I'd insist that Barry is part of any deal... could include some PB&J sandwiches to sweeten the deal.

It would be dumb to just say Sanchez cant be part of this deal as a non starter. Depends on the deal. Id like to see more than $40mm kicked in, but there is an argument to be made for this deal. Not that I think its going to happen.

Sanchez for Votto is robbing Peter to pay Paul in my opinion.

As long as it's a net improvement, it doesn't matter how. I'm not saying I would do the deal, but I do think it's worth considering that Sanchez may never be this good again. He does have a long history of control problems, and that issue rarely goes away permanently.

He does have a long history of control problems, and that issue rarely goes away permanently. He also fits the profile of a guy at increased risk of spending half of his remaining team control working back from surgery (huge velocity, worrisome mechanics according to people who know things about mechanics). He's really good, but he's a volatile asset.

So you want to get rid of guys like Tulo and Martin but also want to trade for Votto? What is your logic there? At least if Tulo and Martin stop hitting, they still play premium defensive positions. If Votto stops hitting... He's useless
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 Players can drop off the face of the earth. Votto is a huge risk especially at his age. Go look at McCutchen
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 If I were a betting man, I'd probably bet against Sanchez being this good again next season. He does seem like a volatile arm in comparison to other top young arms that have come up.
