nmrch Verified Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Just more justification for a limit on term of contracts or size of contracts or cap space. lol, no one forces the owners to give out these huge contracts. Its part of the risk they knowingly take on.
Governator Community Moderator Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Yeah, like anyone would walk away from $100M. And the monthly disability cheques.

It's true but I'm sure the league doesn't like it when a whole market is going to the toilet because a team took too much risk and is now unable to compete financially. But then again, I'm against bailouts so they should suck it and serve as an example for what not to do so teams don't hand out large contracts like that. Imagine if something similar happens to some of the contracts the Nationals handed out, they are screwed for the next 20 years.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 So....who wanted to sign Fielder to a $200M deal? Speak up!!!
Candy Maldonado Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 The Chavez HBP did him in.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Jeter, Arod, Ortiz, Fielder.. we really are saying goodbye to an era and entering a new one..
baseballsss Verified Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Jeter, Arod, Ortiz, Fielder.. we really are saying goodbye to an era and entering a new one.. Was just thinking that. Remeber watching them growing up and now their all gone. Crazy.
flafson Verified Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Jeter, Arod, Ortiz, Fielder.. we really are saying goodbye to an era and entering a new one.. There's literally a decade of age difference between those guys and Fielder, unless you mean his father of course.
baseballsss Verified Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 There's literally a decade of age difference between those guys and Fielder, unless you mean his father of course. I'm thinking he's talking about the big names of the MLB are now all going and watching Harper, Trout, Gincarlo ect. dominate

King Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 blasphemy that you didnt include JD! Probably because he's only a year and a half younger than Fielder.
Maahfaace Verified Member Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 Probably because he's only a year and a half younger than Fielder. which would be 12+ year difference from Jeter and Arod....
baseballsss Verified Member Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 blasphemy that you didnt include JD! lol was actually debating it but Trout, Harper and Gincarlo have legitimate chances to break records and will over shadow JD when everything is said and done.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 JD started late. I think he's talking about HOF type guys. JD is great...but I think he's going to decline before he gets to HOF kind of career numbers.

The last 4 years he's been by far the best player in baseball outside of Trout. I think being such an elite player for a short peak should be worth a lot even if his career isn't as long.

If he can play like Beltre has into his late 30's, then he has a good shot. That's why I'd feel more comfortable with the Jays giving Donaldson a long term contract vs. EE or Bautista.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 (edited) I did. I asked Santa for him and Yu Darvish that December. I wanted Fielder on a 5 year deal (obviously that was never going to happen. Tigers shocked everyone except Boras by giving him 9) Edited August 10, 2016 by G-Snarls

He's a beast but aging and playing through injuries don't usually work.
JFD Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 Man that presser was tough to watch. Feel so bad for the guy.. he was a great player.

If he has another 6 excellent seasons similar to what he's had with the Jays, his career isn't far off Scott Rolen's. And I haven't heard any media or writers who think Rolen's going to the Hall. Even though he should be.

That 2004 Cards team was stacked.

With some pretty impressive career numbers and accomplishments, I think he has a good shot at making it into the hall.

With some pretty impressive career numbers and accomplishments, I think he has a good shot at making it into the hall. I'm skeptical... Third Baseman have a really tough time making the Hall. As corner infielders, they get lumped in with the other offensive positions and the bar tends to get set higher than it should be considering their defensive value. At 300 homeruns and 2000 hits, he's well short of the offensive threshold that would guarantee entry. For him to get in, the voting pool has to evolve to to be more in line with modern valuations. Obviously that's already happening to some extent but it's a slow process of turnover that's bound to be somewhat behind on the times.
