Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Not really that surprising, considering he just had his second spinal surgery in 3 years and is 32 and obese. Interesting to see whether he is retiring or being released, Texas is still on the hook for 4 more years of salary (minus what Detroit is paying).
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Maybe it's to announce Fielder is undergoing a new hi-tech surgery that'll make him slimmer and look like an actual baseball player. He'll then come back next spring training in the best shape of his life.
Frag Verified Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 That really sucks for Fielder, but it doesn't shock me.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 What does this say about the success of the surgery? Baseball aside, I hope he's alright.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Where is Scott Boras beating the ground about his client's perfect health record?
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Thanks Fielder for Devon Travis. Kinsler for Sergio Santos trade broken. Kinsler for Fielder; Kinsler bloked Travis, who was traded for Gose.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 MLBTR: For his career, Fielder has hit 319 home runs (exactly the number his father hit) Whoah...
nmrch Verified Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Where is Scott Boras beating the ground about his client's perfect health record? to be fair Boras wasn't wrong about that, and his neck problems are probably unrelated to his weight, could happen to anyone.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 to be fair Boras wasn't wrong about that, and his neck problems are probably unrelated to his weight, could happen to anyone. Yeah I was wondering about that. I mean this is a kind of a fluke but I wonder if the weight might have nonetheless played a factor. Extra stress on the spine and all. I'm sure someone here understands these things better than I do.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 to be fair Boras wasn't wrong about that, and his neck problems are probably unrelated to his weight, could happen to anyone. I very much doubt that the weight wasn't a factor. More weight equals more torque on his spine with every swing.

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Career Cecil Fielder 319 HR Prince Fielder 319 HR

More weight equals more torque on his spine with every swing. well, i'll defer to the science if that's true. Is that a trend in baseball among hitters, a correlation between spine related injuries and weight that have a sudden onset?
Lil Looper Verified Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 We see a lot of bad contracts handed out but Prince was one of the worst because of his weight issues Good night sweet prince
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Clearly even if he came back from this one, he was probably only a year or two and another operation away from ending it anyway. Makes sense for him to retire.
flafson Verified Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 I'm really sad for him, I knew it wasn't good but had no idea it was this bad...
Inklink Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 MLBTR: For his career, Fielder has hit 319 home runs (exactly the number his father hit) Whoah... Un-freakin-believable.
nmrch Verified Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 We see a lot of bad contracts handed out but Prince was one of the worst because of his weight issues Good night sweet prince We're only thinking that because it didn't work out, that's the benefit of hindsight. At the time he was a relatively very young FA who despite his weight had a perfect health record. All FA contracts in general are "bad contracts" but Fielder's youth and lack of injury history should have counted in his favor just as much as his weight should have counted against him.
flafson Verified Member Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Just more justification for a limit on term of contracts or size of contracts or cap space.
Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
