johnl Verified Member Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 Just heard on the radio that Atkins is flying to Houston to talk to hobby Walker and Sanchez about Sanchez's future for the season.so here's to hoping they let him continue as a starter and just limit his innings.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 Sanchez arm needs to be protected. No one maybe in baseball has more knowledge about baseball then Shapiro. I am sure Shatkins is on his way to say to Gibbons stop talking to the media These are high leverage times. 3 high leverage innings from Sanchez a week are better than a start
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 "Gibby, Sanchez is going to the bullpen, full stop. Stop telling the media otherwise. I can't believe I had to fly down here to make this clear to you. Answer your damn phone. I'm your boss."
intrigid Verified Member Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 I can't comprehend why he would book an emergency flight just to tell him in person that nothing has changed and he will continue to be a starter. It doesn't make sense. When a manager books a sudden in-person meeting with an employee, it's to tell him his job conditions are changing. That's just how it works.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 I am sure Shatkins is on his way to say to Gibbons stop talking to the media Wouldn't a simple phone call suffice?
West Texas Forever Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 Wouldn't a simple phone call suffice? Gibby is an old school Texan, he doesn't own a cell phone... if you want to talk better make it face to face and bring a few beers.
flafson Verified Member Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 Wouldn't a simple phone call suffice? Maybe they want to show the media that they are taking it seriously.

Maybe, but he said he's meeting with Gibby and Pete Walker as well. It might be a discussion amongst the 4 of them to see how they all feel moving forward
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 What's wrong with a teleconference, or a videoconference? Maybe there is a golf course in the area that Atkins likes.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 He probably wants to talk to the whole team. Maybe he didn't like Martin's comments and he wants to make sure this situation doesn't get out of hand.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 Gibby is pretty hard headed. He isnt the type to simply follow orders or be a yes man. Russell Martin apparently has a lot of say in this as well. How many catchers in mlb have caught the innings he has I would trust his opinion before Gibbys or Walkers

Maybe he didn't like Martin's comments and he wants to make sure this situation doesn't get out of hand. A little late for that. Besides their is zero chance he can calm this situation. The players feel how they feel. Its not like they don't understand the thought process. It's that they don't believe it to be an 100% exact science.

BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 They woke up the American Media, hence this trip had to be publicized to keep the hounds outside the door at bay!!! Nothing to see here you scribes from hell, we got this, we are fine, we are a team and as a team we are all on the same team! Pulling one cart uphill to win a World Series! Thank you now politely just f*** Off!!! Thank you. I am sure Shatkins, the Dymnamic Duo have flown into many games this year, we just didn't know.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 Martin said nobody in the organization has even asked him what he think about the situation. Well that's wrong although I am sure Martin and Walker are constantly talking and Walker is relaying things.

From what I heard he is talking to them. My guess is they have come to point in the season a decision needs to be made, but there are a few ways they could go and want their input....directly. My guess is 6 man rotation, skipping starts, limiting innings pitcher per game, move to the pen (pitching like a pen pitcher), or move to the pen basically pitching 2-3 innings per outing. My guess is they really don't know which way to go and want their input....I hope
glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 They won't change their minds. Probably being done to diffuse any clubhouse issues with players (well, Martin at least) coming out and speaking negatively about the decision, and obviously to map it out with Sanchez, if they haven't already. Shapiro won't change his mind because the media disagrees with him, nor should he.
baseballsss Verified Member Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 Turns out playoff appearances don't make you a doctor. Doctors and all their information are doing a real good job of preventing all these pitchers injuries aren't they? Simply asking Martin if they've seen any changes with SAnchez or if he's tiring earlier isn't that hard.

They should talk to Martin yes, but I don't think there's much he can tell them they don't already know from pitch statistics.

They'd be asking him to report honestly on an issue that directly impacts his teammate, and he knows that Sanchez wants to start. Who knows A) if Martin has anything valuable to add, if he'd be honest, and C) how honesty from Martin would impact his relationship with Sanchez. Best to leave him out IMO.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 What I heard is that Atkins is meeting with Sanchez, Gibbons and Walker (and after the rest of the team) to discuss options. Maybe there's more than one option on the table that the FO is ok with. From what I heard over the radio the past few days is that there's lots of ways to preserve the arm than the pen that make sense, so I guess the FO is indifferent of the method as long as he throws less

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 What a soap opera this is becoming. All because Gibby said one little quip in spring training and because Sanchez has been so f'n good

Simply asking Martin if they've seen any changes with SAnchez or if he's tiring earlier isn't that hard. This is silly logic. Not following doctors' orders would probably result in way, way more injuries than we see now.
