King Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 Tellez reminds me a lot of David Ortiz athletically. Sew a super athletic upper body with good rotational mechanics onto a stiff, unathletic pair of legs, and you get Ortiz and Tellez. They may even have comparable raw power, the difference being Ortiz’ ability to utilize that power effectively with a better swing path for putting the ball in the air. The ball jumps off Tellez’ bat, but he’s very choppy getting to contact, limiting his power mostly to pitches up in the zone, where his plane is forced to level out more. What may save him from being a slugger who doesn’t slug enough is his raw hitting ability: Tellez has shown better contact rates than you’d expect and, partially as a result, the potential for a plus hit tool. Also, though his speed is extremely limited, he’s a smart base-runner who won’t kill you with poor decisions when he gets on. Though he’s not a sure thing with the bat yet, I could very easily see him in the 50+ group without having to squint. I felt more comfortable with him here until he can make some swing adjustments. His bat will get him some kind of opportunity either way. Gibbers. Why did you cut Tellez in DDL this past June when he finally had a little bit of value, after holding onto him for a couple years after you drafted him 10th overall? I'm not bashing the decision. Just curious to hear your reasoning behind it.

With Russell and Liriano having worked together, I can't wait to see him work. One thing that pisses me off is that it likely costs Sanchez a real shot at a Cy Young.
Governator Community Moderator Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 I'm really looking forward to getting to know the new prospects from King's daily updates. This is really exciting news and we finally have another catcher in the system with some value. Thanks Hutch for all the years of service, good luck in Pittsburgh.
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Reese McGuire could probably slide into the backup role right now and be worth more than Thole. People think he is a zero with the bat but his contact skills look good on paper (29 walks and only 26 K's this year in 77 games!) and he's only 21.
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Harold Ramirez and the Yankees new OF prospect Billy McKinney are cut from the same cloth, so it will be interesting to see how they develop in the same division. Two guys without CF chops and without big power or speed - but strong hit tools.

Aaron is the real deal and will have many chances the next 5-7 years to compete for CY young. But if his arm blows up now, we just lost the ace. He will make the bullpen much stronger, something we also desperately need

If he is truly legit, and not just having a anomaly of a season, he will get plenty more chances. As long as he is healthy!

I have no idea why anyone thought SRF would be included in this trade unless we got Starling Marte as well.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 What would you rather have. 17M of Lirano or 17M of Puig?

closetjaysfan Verified Member Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Im not convinced that this means Sanchez goes to the pen.. didnt someone say they were looking at creative options? What if they plan on going with a 6 man rotation giving extra rest for Sanchez and Estrada? Im sure they could keep Happ at every 5 starts since he is pitching so well.

Atkins is talking about moving Sanchez to the pen very soon, and then possibly having him start again when the playoffs roll around.

At 21 Thole was in Hi-A with a 300/382/427 slash line and 45 walks to 38 K's in 111 games. Atkins was on Tim and Sid and said once Sanchez hits the pen he's staying there the rest of the season.

Thole had a significant skill change / decline. When he came into the league he actually hit for AVG and had real OBP skills - he was basically a viable starting catcher and league average talent. Not sure what happened to him. Maybe once he started catching the knuckleball it f***ed him up completely.

He sucks now though, obviously.
