I really didn't intend that to start a debate as to whether Pillar has 70 or 80 grade defense lol.

well you did. to get an 80 grade a player must be better than 99.5% of players. a 70 is better than 95%. Say there are about 1000 professional outfielders through out the majors and minors, an 80 defender would be in the top 5 and a 70 defender would be in the top 50.

So the question is: is Pillar more of a top 5ish type of defender or more of a top 50ish? I think we all know the answer to that. Maybe his real defensive grade is something like 78

Jesus christ start a new thread if you want to debate if he's a 70 or 80, it was really irrelevant to the post.

Kiremire :P

You know what I mean!!!

Also I'm watching the Atkins conference and man this guy is growing fast with the way he handles the media. Straight to the point and when he's going to beat around the bush he says he's gonna beat around the bush. He has jokes and doesn't entertain media bs where the same question he doesn't answer gets aske again, he cut down Davidi's question about the money compensation after it was the 3rd time they asked about it pretty quickly

I posted 70-80 specifically to avoid getting called out for using 70 or 80. Should have known.

From what Atkins is saying they make it sound like Upton will be a 4th OF. We'll have to see how it shakes out though.

Inexcusable. Smoak should be riding the bench and Upton serving as an everyday super OF utility player.

Actually it was implied he wasn't an everyday player not a 4th OFer. Which makes sense, they may platoon him to start it off, I don't think they want EE to play everyday at 1B yet for conditioning reasons

I know, that's why it's so stupid. That's like saying Jose is good for 25+ HRs and calling you out saying "What!?! You think he might only hit 25!?!"

Defense and defensive stats are so variable, I wouldn't be comfortable going that far. 70, sure. It's definitely well above average. And are you strictly talking about his range (which is great), or his total defensive package? Because his arm is average at best.

I'd say its above average. His arm strength is probably average but it plays better because he can throw on the run and releases the ball quickly while being accurate.

3rd best Defensive value in all of MLB, and best among outfielders. (I know Kiermaer has been injured)

Yes I agree with you that Defense can have huge deviations from year to year, but I don't think it's outrageous to say Pillar's defense THIS YEAR is comparable to Stanton's power and Chapman's fastball.

So am I to understand that the 5 million commitment is the total Blue Jays commitment for 2016 and 2017? That's insanely cheap if true. Anyone know how it breaks down? Is it nothing this year and 5 million next?

Atkins said he wouldn't discuss how the money is allocated.

It's hard to say with the single-season defensive metrics. I would just lean otherwise based on the nature of measurement.

That's just defense in general though right? Is there a star that tracks how good a route a player takes to a ball? Like maybe average shortest distance taken to record a putout or something? But even then you have to take park factors into account.

Well I guess it doesn't matter. Five million is nothing. This is like a higher stakes version of the Grilli trade.

you have an odd obsession with reddit, you should join sometime. Maybe take a peek at gonewild if you're bored and adventurous

the blue jays subreddit is cancer and coincidentally also where you get most of your s***

Baseball subreddit is also s***. I got downvoted in an MVP discussion a lot because I suggested that people who were suggesting Ortiz were forgetting that the other 3 MVP candidates all can will a GG this season while Ortiz is a full time DH with stats that are slightly better than the other 3 offensively. The highest voted response to me was? I apperently forgot to take in the emotional value of Ortiz winning the MVP in his last season and that should play a big part in deciding who wins.

Reddit is great because you can unsubscribe from s***** subreddit and subscribe to only ones you like

TSN Why do they even try:

"Third, if they Jays do decide to play Upton in their outfield over Pillar, it gives them more lineup flexibility. Upton can hit leadoff, moving Bautista down the order into a more production-focused role."

So much wrong with whats in that

Travis

Donaldson

Bautista RF

Edwin 1b

Saunders DH

Tulo

Upton LF

Martin

Pillar

Seems about right to me.

I wonder if it's realistic that Bautista sees almost all of his time down the stretch at DH. It's pretty obviously the best configuration going forward.

Smoak looks... completely superfluous. That extension was so bizarre. He doesn't even have a role on the team.

Bizarre?" Insanity " would be nearer the truth.

Good lineup, too bad GM just said Upton Jr will not be an everyday player...I guess a little more used than a 4th outfielder lol
