What a steal, wow. I can't believe we gave nothing, and they ate almost the whole contract, that is insane. Why would the Padres do that? They must have really love Hansel? I thought for sure we were giving up a ton for him, especially with other teams interested and SD eating contract.

There are many ways to improve our WAR projections, I'm sure Atkins is exploring all of them. As nox would say, you're narrowly framing the problem. A 1 WAR upgrade at 1B or OF is the same as a 1 WAR upgrade in the rotation.

I wonder if it's realistic that Bautista sees almost all of his time down the stretch at DH. It's pretty obviously the best configuration going forward.

 

Smoak looks... completely superfluous. That extension was so bizarre. He doesn't even have a role on the team.

But we are targeting both Cashner and to a way lesser extent Ross...to be bullpen pitchers.

I trust Biagini as well if you were referring to Grilli and Osuna. He's been really effective in his 6th inning/down by a run or two role.

Can you guys stop talking about Pompey like he's some next big thing? Stop suggesting we trade Pillar and relying on Pompey, unless we're rebuilding. Other than that it would be a step down. He's the 2nd best defensive CF in the AL behind Kiremire and even that can be debated in Pillar's case. Those types of players aren't easy to find

Defense and defensive stats are so variable, I wouldn't be comfortable going that far. 70, sure. It's definitely well above average. And are you strictly talking about his range (which is great), or his total defensive package? Because his arm is average at best.
