Oh man I can't wait to see Donaldson just absolutely tee off on this gas can. I'd resign Edwin just to see him hit bombs off Dickey in the Rogers Center lol

Honestly I see an NL West team signing him, maybe the Padres. Big ballpark and it's a low-cost signing. Plus they seem to love signing our old pitchers (Johnson, Morrow)

Knowing the Jays luck, I'm sure RA Dickey would shut the lineup down if he were pitching against them in another uni next season.

I could see the Mets bringing him back, especially if they don't re-sign Bartolo or if he retires. Pirates could be an option as well. Or Miami.

Thole is actually pretty damn good at catching the knuckleball. Hanigan catches Wright and he's been far worse at it.

That said, find a backup C that can catch the knuckleball somewhat acceptably. It shouldn't be that hard to to replace Thole. They aren't glued together, Thole catches him more out of convenience more than anything else.

Perhaps because Wright's knuckleball is better? The only gifs I see on my facebook page are slow-mo's of Wright throwing ridiculous knuckleballs that nobody is catching. Perhaps he may not be as consistent, but his knuckleball is filthy.

On the slim chance you're not just trolling me:

Dickey, since the start of 2010 (when he started as a full-time knuckleballer) has a 3.52 ERA, a 4.13 FIP, and a 4.06 xFIP over almost 1400 innings. He's never had an ERA within even a third of a run of his FIP. We can be reasonably sure that this isn't just luck, because knuckleball pitchers have a history of busting FIP (and he's also an excellent defender, which helps pitchers beat DIPS).

Fangraphs WAR is based on FIP. Because of the above, it isn't a good metric for approximating Dickey's value. It's far better to use RA-9 WAR, which looks at actual run prevention, because Dickey's DIPS will undervalue him, and are almost meaningless.

He's between 2.6 and 3.4 RA-9 WAR every year since joining the team. He's at 1.3 this year, and will almost certainly finish at around 2. Using the best information we have, he's a 2-win pitcher.

A fitting end to this thread is that R.A Dickey ends the season with a RA9 WAR of 1.1 and a fWAR of 1.

Hear me out. I know we all hate watching him pitch, I know he's boring as f*** in interviews, I know we resent him because we traded Syndergaard to get him, and I know we all hate having Josh Thole on the roster.

But over the last calendar year, here are Dickey's numbers:

216 IP, 3.41 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 2.43 K/BB, 9.4% SwStr

Granted, the FIP and xFIP paint a less flattering picture (4.41/4.55), but the same is true of Estrada and we all love him regardless. Objectively, Dickey's been an adequate, mid-rotation innings eater. It might actually make sense to extend Dickey for one year (plus an option, perhaps) for something in the vicinity of $8-10M, and given his situation, I think he'd probably be open to it. When you consider how sparse the free agent market for SP is this coming off-season, I think there's an argument to be made to bring him back for another year.

No thanks. Liriano is just fine for our fifth starter.

I would have to assume this post was made before the Liriano acquisition
