John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 Pay the man. 4/100 should do it f*** no. Paying a DH that kind of money would be bat s*** crazy
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 See the funny thing is everyone was quick to jump on EE's 'major decline' but he had yet to get hot, something he does EVERY year. Obviously he won't be able to maintain this pace but no one should be surprised by how well he's been hitting lately. Bautista on the other hand has clearly declined in almost every aspect except maybe in the walk column and it's not jus a hot/cold thing. He is a shell of the player that he used to be. He's still a productive hitter but he's no longer elite with the bat and he provides arguably negative value with the glove. Bautista has never been a positive defensive asset overall. His arm made a few great throws per season but the big picture for his D has always been negative.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 3/60 would probably be the max that Shapiro will offer EE.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 3/60 would probably be the max that Shapiro will offer EE. I don't think it would even be that high. Maybe 3/48 or 3/51
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 EE, JB, Smoak and Saunders - realistically the Jays will need to sign at least two of them. There's no way that the front office can let all four walk and expect to fill the holes in the OF/1B/DH with internal options.

He was at least average until that Demon Young throw the stats back that up if you put any stock into them.
flafson Verified Member Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 I feel safer paying a younger player 8/200 than Jose 4/100 Give Pillar 8/200.

Let's say hypothetically that he did need TJS, wouldn't that also affect his abilities at the plate? I remember reading that in 93 Jose Canseco came into pitch during a blow out and threw out his arm, his only option was to go under the knife

I don't know enough to comment on how it would affect his hitting, but he seems fine.
TheGrandslamMan Verified Member Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 That's a good point. The guy used to have a cannon, now he almost kinda side arms it in. If there is major damage done then he's delusional to think he's gonna get a 150 million dollar contract.

One at third and one at the plate, since then nothing.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ot47WN9RcKw

Or he might have injured it filming that commercial
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 From a PR standpoint it would be extremely difficult not to resign at least one of JB/EB as there's not much on the market to replace them with. The backlash will be heightened ten-fold if the Jays go on another exciting playoff run. Can you imagine the backlash if the Jays make the finals or win the World Series and then let both of em go? The riot mobs would be out in full force... Puts Shapiro in a real tough spot. Fans, LOL
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 If the season ended today , there is no way Bautista could command more than 16-18M a year. He's going to have to get red hot in order to get to a number even close to what he wants. These little injuries that he keeps compiling keep increasing our odds of resigning him to a more reasonable deal. Get well soon Jose! But not too soon!
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 For all the talk about Jose defying aging curves because his yogic abilities, he has been banged up a lot over the last few years. His hip again...his toe last night....his shoulder. He looks more awful in the OF and the only + asset he had in his arm is now a negative. He is a 1B/DH option only at this point really. He will maintain his eye and pop, but he is basically a dead pull hitter with numbers I expect will continue to decline. Any contract might have 1/2 more well above avg bat years, but after that its a total crap shoot. His WAR this season is 0.8. He has a lot of work to do to get back to close to 2015 4.5.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 Jose's dream of a superman pay day is running down the drain.

Nah man, Jose takes care of his body. Have you SEEN HIM in the outfield? He stretches before every pitch. These are all freak injuries happening to him. He totally deserves to get paid whatever he wants, this organization OWS HIM. Rogers better sign him for 150 million or they will lose me as a fan! /s

That's fair but that works both ways when it comes to paying premiums for past and current performance. Having said that he is very capable of getting hot and putting up some monster 2nd half numbers, if he can stay on the field.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 Don't want to get ahead of myself but after Mike Wright's comments about the holes in Edwin's swing last time he faced them, I'd really love to him(and others) light him up tonight. http://www.thescore.com/mlb/news/1015771-orioles-wright-encarnacion-is-over-hyped
nmrch Verified Member Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 And Jose's dropping numbers aren't just bad luck with BABIP or HR/FB, his exit velocity has dropped a little bit, he was 7th in the league last year and his current number would put him around 25. So he hasn't collapsed completely but there's a real decline. In addition to not hitting the ball as harder there's a dramatic drop off in his launch angle, he's not elevating the ball like he used to.

Just about every batter in the majors has at least one hole in their swing that can be exploited. That doesn't suddenly mean that EE's capability or power as a hitter is "overrated". He's been a consistent 150 wRC+ hitter with us, which is well in line with most of David Ortiz's better seasons.
