John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 Apologies if this was reported in another thread but I did a quick search and came up empty. It's technically off topic from baseball, but as one of the few sports figures that inarguably transcends his sport - i think it should be here. Muhammed Ali has passed away at the age of 74 http://www.nbcnews.com/news/sports/muhammad-ali-greatest-all-time-dead-74-n584776
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 rip guess I'm too young to appreciate how dominating he was.
thatoneguy Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 rip guess I'm too young to appreciate how dominating he was. You might be too young to remember that, but just about everyone knows at least one of his quotes. This man was more than just a boxer, he was a revolutionary.
CJ-Freeway Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 Yeah just saw it on the news RIP Champ!
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2016 Author Posted June 4, 2016 rip guess I'm too young to appreciate how dominating he was. The thing is, his domination of boxing was only 1 aspect of his worldwide appeal. When he refused to be drafted into the army for the Vietnam war and converted to Islam, was arrested and convicted, stripped of the title and then ultiately got his conviction overturned... it was a changing point in history It wasn't just boxing that benefitted from Ali, but the entire world
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 The greatest ever. What a joy of human being
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 Seems like the poor guy was suffering from Parkinson's for as long as I remember him.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 The man that got me and millions others into boxing. He wasn't the greatest fighter...but he was The Greatest.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 A true legend, I cannot think of anyone who had more influence both in and outside of their sport.... Cassius was a major influence on the progression of civil rights "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee" RIP
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 I worry that true greats are no longer being born to replace those we lose. Ali was a hero who defined greatness, and his legend will live on for eternity. RIP Champ
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 Sad to hear this. "Bundini whats my strategy? Float like a butterfly sting like a bee...rumble young man rumble!". He has been a shadow of his former self for so long. Articulate, cocky and so talented. He transcended sport into the geo-political world at a time when the Champ was the Champ....all over the world. He is Legend...the Greatest. Without going into too many details good friend of mine knows Chuvalo. A few years ago Chuvalo took a friend of my friends to dinner with Ali. My friend was gobsmacked because was his hero. He could hardly believe it was Ali and barely said a word. Ali was pretty sick at the time. At the end of a short dinner he offered these guys a ride to the hotel in a limo. In the limo Ali waved this guy to come close. The guy is thinking "this is my big moment, Ali wants to tell me something....some epiphany I can take to my grave". The guy leans in to Ali ready to receive the pearl of wisdom and Ali says to him in his remaining whispered voice "are you getting any pussy?". Ali Boom Ba Yay! RIP Louisville Lip

Was Ali gonna hook a brother up if he wasn't?

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 Sad to hear he passed but with how bad his disease had become maybe its not the worst thing this happened. He basically couldn't talk anymore and really struggled to stand and for a guy who was one of the best talkers it was really sad to see. RIP
nextyear Verified Member Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 I heard a great quote today on 590 The Fan, by Mohammad Ali and I looked it up online to make sure that I quoted it correctly: If a man looks at the world when he is 50 the same way he looked at it when he was 20 and it hasn’t changed, then be has wasted 30 years of his life - http://quoteinvestigator.com/2014/11/01/life-view/ This seems like such a great quote when I look back at my much simpler life over the past decades.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 RIP to the great Muhammad Ali Clay, I cant even begin to describe his well documented impact (for not only African Americans). Great segments from Brunt, Blair, Walker, on the Fan590, but Bobcat takes the cake. Incredible segment from him today
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 Just heard a quote on the radio that I like. He had just won a gold medal and goes to the diner in his home town of Louisville. He asks for a coffee and a hot dog and the waitress says "we don't serve negroes here." He responds "That's ok, I don't eat them either, just get me a coffee."
