Of course they have been (and are). I remember well after the strike everyone cheering on Sosa and McGwire, Bonds bashing home runs at historic rates while everyone turned a blind eye. Lots of players since then have been nailed too. There will always be players who use them because the risk/reward is worth it to them. Some will not get caught. Eventually politicians became involved and many of them had to testify before Congress. That moved the needle on the rules. Players like Bonds, who should be in the HOF, may not be as a result.

That doesn't mean the owners who are signing big deals and getting stuck with them when players are busted might not want to alter that equation that at some point.

Lol, I'm talking since baseball started being played professionally. Like 125 years.

Not anabolic steriods and HGH, but stimulants and all other kinds of substances to gain an edge. Heck some will even drink like 25 red bulls because its a "legal stimulant"

Not in baseball, I know the NFL and NHL do, not sure about the NBA.

The NHL doesn't. But the LA Kings magically managed to get out of Mike Richards' horrible contract when he was caught bringing oxi's over the border. This kind of thing was completely unprecedented at the time and depending on who you ask, was just a way they've found to circumvent the salary cap. Yet no one even talks about it anymore.

Meanwhile, if Roberto Luongo retires before the age of 42, Gary Betman has decided that the Canucks need to be punished with a cap penalty because of the length of contract that they signed Luongo to, even though it was completely legal at the time and he doesn't even play for Vancouver anymore. Makes sense, right?

The whole issue with being able to walk away from guaranteed money is that it would open up an easy way for teams to spike their own players supplements just to get out from under a s***** contract they gave out and now want to get rid of when the player inevitably doesn't live up to it.

If I was running the Angels and had the option to terminate Pujols albatross by sliding the trainer some cash under the table to swap some of this for some of that... you bet I would. It would be good business.

And you're kidding yourself if you don't think it would happen, regardless of how we might like to think that Front Offices would be above that kind of s***. Theyd do it because billions of dollars are at stake.

There are numerous arguments the union would make such as this. They are not invalid. There are also plenty of counter arguments equally valid. It will come down to bargaining power and legal arguments. I'm not saying it's going to happen anytime soon. I just don't think it's out of the realm of possibility.

I heard today some discussions that if a player gets 2 PED suspensions, the contract could be voided.

That's not true.

One thing to keep in mind is that breakout players testing positive is probably more coincidence than anything else. We don't know that Gordon and Colabello weren't using previously in their careers. We don't know that there aren't a whole bunch of steady performers who are taking PEDs (though it seems very likely). The Dee Gordon took PEDs to steal a contract from the Marlins narrative is just that, a narrative. There's not necessarily a whole lot to substantiate it. Deep down, the owners are probably fine with players taking PEDs as long as they produce on the field and don't get caught so I don't think there's any huge push for tougher rules. That pressure mostly comes from outside the game.

Good post. I agree.

Have you guys ever got that feeling where you cringe in embarrassment simply due to witnessing someone else make a huge ass out of themselves?

I had that feeling watching the Jamie Cambell Spotsnet360 interview. Guys an awful actor.

Are you young enough to remember Rob Faulds as the play-by-play guy?

Rob Faulds? I'm not too sure. It seemed like for years that every different season had countless guys calling games so I lose track of who's who.

I've read a lot of complaints about Buck and Tabler online but I think it's good that they at least have a consistent pair of decent guys now.

It was never ending cringe.

As much as people bash Sportnet: It's nice that we get every single game broadcasted. I remember when the games were on TSN and CBC and there was always a pretty significant handful of games that wouldn't be aired... I'd guess about 20-30.

He came back last year and was the PxP guy during the first big winning streak. I can picture Russel Martin hitting the bases loaded triple to CF in Boston with him making some stupid call.

I thought Jamie Cambell was bad as the PxP guy but I find him to be good in the role he has.

Campbell was the worst play by play guy. Definitely worse than Faulds in that regard. I guess Campbell's fine in the role he has now because its easy to ignore him and Zaun whenever I see them coming.

I love Buck, but Tabby is unbearable. If I have to hear him recommend bunting to beat the shift one more time I'm going to mail him anthrax.

I love how they ALWAYS point out when someone crosses up the shift. It's straight to the "see - that's why I HATE the shift" - you see right there, that 1 time out of 20 when the shift messed things up. Old school baseball is da best, need harder take out slides, must break legs, must pitch to contact, throw at ribs if you show emotion, there's no crying in baseball, analytics are ruining baseball, starters should go 9 every game and start 60 games a year, back in the day relievers threw 3 innings at a time and I hate change because I'm old.

Sorry - I got a little off topic there, but I swear I hear this BS once during every broadcast. In fact, it's all I "hear" from these guys - it's like they sit there salivating at the opportunity to promote "old school" baseball. I've had to explain to my 5 year old son that Buck, Tabby and Zaun are idiots and to simply ignore them.

Can't wait to hear about the few other names that could get revealed this week. Martin?

Who said there is more, I missed it?

Yup, I was bitching about this yesterday. They talk about the 1 hit that got through because of the shift, but they don't mention the 10 potential hits that were saved because of the shift in that very same game. Idiots. The overwhelming majority of professional athletes are just not smart.

That's nothing. On the radio yesterday, Jerry attempted to draw a ham-fisted correlation between teams who have shifted the most and current W-L record. I lost about 15 IQ points just listening to it.

Jerry's a legend but let's pull the plug already. He's a good play by play guy but his editorializing is insufferable.
