If Pillar doesn't win a Gold Glove this year that will be an absolute joke and a crime because he should have at least won it last season.

No. He shouldn't have.

There isn't really an argument for him winning last year, unless your issue is with requiring a CF, LF, and RF to win.

Didn't Cespedes win an AL corner OF award last year? While Pillar came away with nothing? I'm not a fan of cutting up OF awards like this. Most of the best guys are patrolling CF anyway. The positions aren't as distinct as the individual IF jobs.

I think that is a stupid requirement. Pillar would be a ridiculously good corner outfielder, but we punish him for being a good CF.

Although he shouldn't win. I'm fully expecting JBJ to win the award in the CF.

If not for Kiermaier getting injured for a third of the year, he would be getting the award easily. But Pillar's fielding numbers are even better than last year.

Is that because he plays for Boston and the size of their market? That would be my only reason why he would possibly win it.

He's not going to win it.

Nobody is gonna say anything about Hosmer getting a nomination? He's one of the worst defenders in all of baseball according to fangraphs.

Not only has he been nominated he's going for his 4th win in a row!

No.... KK was better then him last year.... And Pillar likely wins it this year due to KK being injured for a good period of time.

Pat Neshek (6.5 mil), Fernando Rodney (4.5 mil), and Carlos Ruiz (4.5 mil) are available for a bag of balls via trade according to MLBTR.

Rodney is too much of an enigma for my taste, but the other two could be good fits. I don't mind paying a bit more for a quality reliever or veteran backstop if it's a one year deal.

All 3 are fairly attractive pieces at those prices.

Pillar undergoes surgery on thumb

It was to repair a torn ligament, says he's back for spring training.

Must have been when he "sprained" his thumb running the bases, and was put in the DL in early August.

Yes I think he jammed it on a head first slide. I noticed Dexter Fowler stole 2nd feet first in game 5 last night and the broadcasters commented on how he is one of the minority of players who still slide that way these days. I guess there is also the possibility of spraining an ankle on the feet first slide, so maybe both techniques are roughly equal for injury risk potential

Not a fan of Neshek close to 7M. Ruiz would be interesting as a backup. Offensively he is not Thole which is a plus and he can call a great game behind the plate.

I think we have a shot at getting him if we want because I doubt any team will want to count on him as more than a backup. If I'm the Dodgers I keep him though.

This should be under General Jays 2017...but that doesn't exist yet. Pitch Talks is doing a Pitch Trips to Wrigley. Will be an expensive way to spend the weekend in Chicago but could be interesting. Personally I think I am buying group tickets for the Saturday and Sunday games of the series (details on that to follow)

Pitch Trips - Chicago 2017

JOIN THE JAYS AT WRIGLEY FIELD

We’re planning a special long weekend in Chicago next summer, as the Jays meet the Cubs in their storied home park for only the second time in 20 years of interleague play.

We know all eyes are on the playoffs right now, as hopeful Jays fans live from game to game. But the Pitch Talks team already has an interesting idea brewing for next season, and we want to share it now before a unique opportunity slips away.

In August 2017 the Jays meet the Cubs in Chicago for the first time in a dozen years. And that means a rare chance to see our team play in one of the most celebrated ballparks in the major leagues: Wrigley Field.

If you’re familiar with this century-old venue or maybe even have been to a Cubs home game, you know Wrigley Field is a living monument of baseball history, with its hand-turned scoreboard and old-school bleacher seating – with more fans watching from the rooftops of nearby buildings. For aficionados, making a pilgrimage to this historic corner of North Chicago is something like strolling the fairways of Augusta or sipping a mint julep in the Grandstand at Churchill Downs.

So we figured what better destination for a Pitch Talks road trip, taking in a couple of Jays-Cubs games and seeing some of the sights in the Windy City. And, of course, hosting a special Pitch Talks event that brings together fans and guest experts from both Chicago and Toronto.

We’ll be finalizing the details in the next couple of weeks, at which point you can lock in your booking with a deposit. But if you’re interested in potentially joining us for this one-of-a-kind baseball weekend, sign up today to make sure you’re in the loop.

Here’s how the trip is taking shape so far:

Friday, August 18

Catch a morning flight to Chicago. We’ll leave airline arrangements up to you but recommend flying into Midway airport for easier access to the centre of the city.

Meet up at the Freehand Chicago. This funky hotel in the River North district is our home base for three days of ball games and exploring. Your host for the weekend, Pitch Talks founder Kevin Kennedy, will be there to set the stage.

Take the “ L” to Wrigley Field. The elevated train station is right across the street from the Freehand. And your package will include a three-day Chicago Transit Authority pass.

Take in the Jays-Cubs game. We’re planning to have a designated Pitch Talks section for this afternoon game, ideally in one of the best-situated bleachers. Bring your glove.

Chicago river cruise. An ideal way to take in the city sights while enjoying post-game drinks, food and conversation.

Pitch Talks: Chicago edition. A great evening of insider chat, blending the perspectives of both teams – and no doubt some fresh insights from that day’s post-game interviews.

Saturday, August 19

Private tour of Wrigley Field. An up-close look at “The Friendly Confines” (as diehard fans call it), followed by lunch at a pub in the Wrigleyville neighbourhood.

Our second Jays-Cubs game. (MLB is finalizing the 2017 schedule), and ideally from a different angle this time.

A night out in Chicago. We can give you plenty of recommendations for places to eat, imbibe and enjoy a bit of Windy City nightlife,

Sunday, August 20

Discover more of Chicago. After checking out of the Freehand, store your bags and head off to eat, shop and explore the many sights in this diverse and dynamic city.

Optional third Jays-Cubs game. We’ll help you get seats for a likely evening start.

Catch your flight home. Morning, afternoon or evening – you decide what works best.
