KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 People used to post all the time about how all they want is 'meaningful games in September', especially on the old forum. Yeah but that's just semantics. What they really want is winning baseball like Intrigid said. Any fan would much rather coast into the playoffs than do what the team is doing now. I mean sure it's entertaining but fans want their team to win first and foremost.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 This article is ridiculous. The media can F-off. "There was an incident the other night when a couple of journalists tried to corral struggling closer Roberto Osuna for an interview, but he kept blowing them off. Finally, one reporter followed him right into a private part of the clubhouse and told him off. Certainly something nobody, especially a young player like Osuna, needs." Like - seriously? Obviously Rogers has a massive conflict of interest here, but the Owner should be sticking up for the players. If he works for Rogers - fire him. If he doesn't, then ban this ******* from setting foot on the premise every again. Media is the scum of professional sports and the second they forget that - you have to put them back in their place. What drives me nuts is that these reporters will claim they're doing what they're doing for us the fans. Does anybody really care? What is Osuna gonna say that's so interesting? "You just gotta take it one day at a time, focus on your preparation, put your faith in God, bla, bla, bla."

A fan wants the future to be certain and bright... In the short term that means the fan wants to know the team will be in the playoffs and have an awesome shot at going deep in the playoffs. Fans want home field advantage. In the long term the fan want to know the team will be strong for the next few year... they want players they can follow for a generation The good organizations do right by their fans. It is the ethical thing to do... the Red Sox give Papi, for years and years, and when Papi is ready to leave they give Betts, they give Bogartz, they give Bradley Jr. , and Bennintendi and Moncando Epstein loves the fans, and honors them, he gives them years and years of joy, he gives them Rizzo, he gives them Bryant AA gave a pressure cooker... left Gibby with an old disfunctional team, not a bad team, not a great team, but a team without a path for a long future... And they went Boston on the verge collapse.. what happens next we do not know,.

It's not fun watching this team trip on its shoe laces like this. It's like seeing your team go up 6-0 by the 7th and watching the lead evaporate to 6-6 by the 9th, and then having someone say "hey, I thought you wanted the team to be competing -- this should be a great ballgame by your standards!" Meaningful September games in this context isn't so much a team being competitive (like, say, the Tigers or Mariners who never truly got their cars started but have survived this far) as much as it is watching a solid body of work come undone.

Strong attendance. Strong brand. Decent sized payroll with the possibility of an increase. Payroll flexibility next year with a solid if unspectacular rotation and all scarce positions on the diamond next year filled. A middling farm system that has improved substantially since Shapiro took over. Front office hires that suggest Shapiro is desirable to work for. No, no, no. Give me the f***ing Rays or Angels to cheer for instead. Yeah ok so the Cubs, Red Sox and Dodgers have done a few things right recently. Tell that to the other 26 teams.

That's the old expectation. This team was well setup to perform and hasn't at high enough level. .500 September and we easily lock up a playoff spot. Now it's going to be a battle.

And even if you just wanted meaningful basebal... did you want... 1. Meaningful baseball for a couple years then a return to status quo for several years as the Yankees and Red Sox become dominant again?? 2. Meninngful baseball for many years. A team managed and designed for competiitive multi year cycles. If the second most fans are fine for meaningful baseball... mutliple kicks at the can, if it doesn't work out kick the can again, when a cycle ends, look forward to a couple of down years and watching the young base of the next cycle develop. Part of the panic is the fact no one know what comes next..
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 What about the Astros? They were young and bright and now back to irrelevant?
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 Sanchez Stroman Happ Estrada Liriano That is our rotation next year. Anyone who thinks that with those five we don't have a chance next year is an idiot

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 I'd be surprised if they didn't have free reign to discuss what they want. It's terrifying that Buck used to manage this team. He's kind of an institution now, so I don't really mind him calling games until he can't do it anymore, but the idea that he managed an MLB team is so absurd that's almost unbelievable. The shift one drives me nuts, like holy f*** Scotty Stats, you've got one f***ing job. Pull the shift numbers vs. non-shift numbers to shut them up. One that really drives me nuts: "3-0 count to Goins...do you give him the green light?" "Wha nawt? Ryn's bin hawt this game, if he gits a gewd peetch ta hit, wha nawt sweeng?" "I agree, you need to give the hitter that freedom" *Hitter takes pitch for strike one 99% of the time* *Silence* "It's 3-1 to Ryan Goins..."

Part of the panic is the fact no one know what comes next.. I don't think this team is all that far off from being competitive again -- in fact, I think they'll probably steal a Wild Card next year if Shatkins make good moves (which shouldn't be that hard to do -- they don't need to make blockbusters). I'm not really sure what your point has to do with this season, though. I'm not thinking about next year outside of the fact that I'll legit miss seeing Jose and Edwin suit up in blue every night.

Sorry about the overly dramatic language -- This version of the team is coming to an end... there is a good chance there is going to be a little bit of a down cycle. That is why the fans are more panicky then ussual. If the team had gone a different direction, and was a younger team, with the same record the fans wouldn't be as panicky... Or do you see this as just another year?? That Shapiro will be able to keep the Jays competitive in the East EVERY year for the next few, without a down cycle?
vdubmvp Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 Relevant gif: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WFLdDf6juwE/T2aAQHkgL2I/AAAAAAAAA1w/9kJz9JxmM5g/s1600/boy-toy-tractor-two-girls.gif lol I thought it was going to be relevant to the Jays, so that had a very unexpected ending for me. Definitely nowhere near as bad as the boy that got destroyed in the other one.

The Yankees are going to be absolutely insane in a couple of seasons and the Red Sox have so much young talent. It's hard to see how the Jays will be able to keep up without a super massive payroll.
SweetSmellingChacin Verified Member Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 With the playoff format as is, even if the Yanks and Sox are the greatest teams ever over the next few years, the Jays can still make the playoffs.
vdubmvp Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 You'd swear their primary objective this year is to renew faith in old school baseball. They complain about shifting in baseball EVERY SINGLE GAME. I'd love someone to do a video compilation showing every time they suggested the shift is dumb or that a player should flip one through the shift throughout this season...It would be both amazing and nauseating. Honest question - do you think they get free reign to harp about whatever they want? or do you think they have a producer that keeps them in line and/or suggests what topics they should bring up. I guess what I'm trying to say is - is there a chance that someone from Rogers is telling them to push the old school baseball agenda because their research suggest it "speaks" to the majority of their viewers? They're incredibly repetitive about literally everything. Every time they face the Orioles, Buck will mention how this is the first time they've had three players hit 30 or more home runs in a season, and Tabler will immediately follow that up with "that's so surprising with all the great sluggers they've had over the years." Seriously, every single time. As for what they have to talk about, I assume they pretty much have free reign, except when they uncomfortably reference WAR here and there, where I assume someone stuck a sheet with that in front of them and told them to read from it. And on an unrelated Buck complaint, he needs to stop calling people "armchair quarterbacks" when they question the managers' decisions. It's just pissing me off at this point.

polar bear Verified Member Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 I was at the game last night and felt bad for Jose, he has been with the team since 2008 and even with Roy and Vernon they couldn't sniff a playoff birth until 7 years later with an older Jose, the Jays had the best hitter in his prime years and EE as well and they both gave it their all and finally we get a playoff birth last year and they're probably gone by years end, slightly bummed out. http://i.imgur.com/FJwzD1E.jpg Goodbye you two mashers. http://i.imgur.com/2zduUO0.jpg Happy when he's gone, the guys an dick.

Baseball is hard, and making the playoffs is even harder. The last four World Series Champs haven't even made the playoffs the following year.
