puphood Verified Member Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 Take a deep breath. Votto would make for a very interesting lineup addition for sure. Though I like it I don't see a Votto deal as Atkins/Sapiro signed Smoak for about 1/2 the cost per year of Votto, and Smoak is keeping the bench warm while they hope for the stars to realign for him. Add to this the FO haven't seriously attempted to sign any of their high end franchise players this spring and in all seriousness will likely loose them to FA. In July they didn't signed any for sure relief help. This front office would rather play the slot machines of buy cheap and hope for the stars to realign which has admittedly worked with Grilli, maybe Benoit/Liriano but not so much with Morales, Chavez........Votto isn't in the equation...this FO is to cheap and love to play the penny slots

fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 If we make and lose the wild card game Is this season a failure? If we don't win the division it's a faliure in my eyes.

intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 Yeah it would be disappointing. I agree that a contender not at least making a division series is a failure. But a team with Toronto's talent should at least get to the CS. And yes, I realize the crapshoot nature of the playoffs. I think by objective measures a division championship is a successful season though. My opinion might change if the AL East three-way persists. Hard to see any of the teams being legit failures ifif they put together 93-95 wins each. Not unlike last year's NL Wild Card teams, who both got at least 97 wins.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 23, 2016 Author Posted August 23, 2016 Win division or win a wild card game and advance Otherwise I am very disappointed

glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 Make the ALDS and I'll be happy. The playoffs are a crapshoot. Just don't play the one and done game and lose. That would suck.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 23, 2016 Author Posted August 23, 2016 Pillar back tonight!
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 Thanks God... At least he can catch the ball
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 Great news on Pillar, hope the injury time off didn't affect his hold on the Gold Glove award he so rightfully deserves.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 Great news on Pillar, hope the injury time off didn't affect his hold on the Gold Glove award he so rightfully deserves. Adam Jones got that s*** on the lock
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 No thanks. I see zero surplus value in Joey Votto. I love Canadians, but at that price I'll keep the prospects. Votto is exactly what this team needs. A LHH that can actually hit, has a great eye, and is locked up for awhile so Smoak can take a hike. Donaldson, Votto, Edwin, Travis, etc for next year would still be a contender with our pitching....plus we will have a bunch of money to cover his salary.

Things could be different 7 years from now. $25MM when he's 39.

Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 Things could be different 7 years from now. $25MM when he's 39. Yeah, but at some point the ownership needs to grow a pair and open the wallets.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 Honestly 25M in 2023 might not even be that bad. When Harper, Machado, and Kershaw are making half a billion probably not.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 Yeah, but at some point the ownership needs to grow a pair and open the wallets. 150 million dollar payroll isn't opening the wallet?

Caper Verified Member Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 Because it worked so well for the Angels (etc.). The bigger problem for the Angels is that they absolutely decimated their farm system trying to contend. Not just the Hamilton and Puljos contract.
puphood Verified Member Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 ...sigh... isn't this horse dead yet? Not yet. No left hander in the bull pen worth sending out in high leverage situations in the 7th.

Trade all the prospects because this is our LAST CHANCE Not really. A potential Votto deal would supposedly cost not that much in terms of prospects.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 Not really. A potential Votto deal would supposedly cost not that much in terms of prospects. Even if that were true, how likely is it that this front office would acquire a player signed for that much until he's 40? They don't even want to sign Edwin and Jose because of their ages. They obviously place value on aging, as they should. I mean, it would be awesome to have Votto in the lineup for the next few years, but it's the last few years of his contract that are the problem, including a huge buyout at the end of it.
