His injury history, D and his K rate are major concerns. But having said that a QO is worth the risk he accepts. If he continues to tank for the remainder of 2016 then obviously they will have to reconsider. He is mired in a deep rut.

I think we're going to offer him a 3 year deal with an opt out after the first year. Probably around the rate of 3/60. Bautista's not taking a win-win scenario, in the FA market he probably gets at least a 3 year, but the opt out at least gives him a chance to possibly re-test the market. No reason he should take a QO without a fallback option

He wont do 3/60 as a 36 year old if he thinks he is a 30aav player. He doesn't want to hit the market as a 39 year old.It would behoove him to take a 1 yr deal somewhere in that case where he doesn't get blown away with offers, unless it was like Cespedes. Front loaded and opt out after 1 year

 

There are lots of factors to consider

 

Bautista has lots of marketing in Toronto, and Rogers Centre is a friendly park.

 

As a DH here he can probably still hit another 100 bombs, and give himself a shot at HOF

Do you disagree with my statement or are you just hell bent on people stopping talking about the price it will cost for us to retain the face of our franchise. It's kinda a big issue I think.

 

Personally, I'm a settler. I'd take 3/60 if Jay's offered it to stay in a good spot making big money, but I see him as a maximizer based on his comments. I think he feels he'll bounce back just fine from turf toe and a knee sprain

I just think this whole situation took an unexpected turn and it's all a huge question mark. It was reported he was asking for 5/150 but never confirmed. Now obviously he won't get anywhere close to that, but if that was his original mindset how much is he willing to drop?

If it wasn't, and he only ever seeking say 4/100, how much would he drop from that? He's as stubborn as they come, so will he even change his mindset at all?

Additionally, how is the rest of the year gonna play out? How many games will he even play from here on out? Does he get hurt again? Does he continue his weak 114 wRC+ pace in his limited remaining games?

 

No disrespect to you, and my original post wasnt directed soley at you, it was a generalization. I get you're just speculating, you're a good poster. There are just so many questions yet to be answered and so many unknowns I think its impossible to say definitely no he wont take this and yes he would take that. Gotcha. I'm strictly guessing his thoughts are that he has complete confidence in his abilities still and says he played 80g so far at a 90 r 90rbi 30 hr 350 obp pace and that his injuries aren't age related... And I agree with him

 

Now... The defense is another matter . I think lf is a compromise between rf And dh/1b that could happen.

 

Also, I recall him saying Rogers asked him for a number and then leaked the number. Hard to hold that against him.

 

Now... His number is crazy given his age but that's not surprising. On the flip side Jay's offered Delgado like 1 year 6 m before he left . His last healthy year for mets in a career that deserved more hof discussion had Like 37hr. So part of it all is negotiation.

 

And as much as he knows he is worth more to Jay's due to marketing, he has business here as well.

 

I'd be all for a compromise of 4/80 at high end personally.
