Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 Hey guys, just looking for some quick advice. I'm planning a road trip to see some other baseball parks. I'm planning to hit Detroit, Cleveland, and Pittsburg over the course of a few days during the summer. How safe(or unsafe) are each of the cities? Is it safe to stay in Detroit for a night? Any tips/tricks? Thanks
GD Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 Yes it is safe to stay in Detroit for a night, lol. I did that exact trip a few summers ago. There's a nice hotel near the ball park

West Texas Forever Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 Detroit doesn't deserve the hate it gets. I used to visit Detroit 4 - 5 times a year and nothing ever ever happened. I used to walk around with my good expensive DSLR and no one bothered me, all it is white media over hyping s***. At night don't go around with your phone screen at 274% to attract attention like any major city, I have honestly had more sketchier moments in Milwaukee, Oakland, San Fransisco, Las Vegas than I ever had in Detroit. Stay at the Motor City Hotel and Casino, it is where all the ball players stay, it is pretty dope. Cleveland is fine, West 5th street has some good pubs and s*** but Cleveland is overall pretty forgettable, it is the mistake by the lake. Pittsburgh is a better version of Hamilton. I have visited a lot over the years, stay downtown near the ballpark (best park in the majors besides SF) and take a cab to the southside and party it up, cheap booze, good times and a really fun and forgotten American city in my opinion. If you need at bar/restaurant recommendations just PM me.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 Just be careful where you stop for gas. Unless you go looking for trouble you're probably not going to find it.
AdamLindsMom Verified Member Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 You're naive if you think Detroit isn't sketch. It's fine if you're just going to the ball game or to a few bars and restaurants before and after the game but I wouldn't be wandering around late at night stumbling back to your hotel. I also wouldn't be stopping at any random gas station or things like that without getting outside of the city. This is going back a few years but my wife got lost one time on her way back to Canada. A cop pulled her over and basically said WTF are you doing. Gave her directions and told her not to stop at any red lights unless she was yielding to oncoming traffic.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 Pittsburgh is actually beautiful by the way

Any tips/tricks? Thanks Ask GP as he has been to every ballpark in North America. As for that kind of road trip, where your visiting Detroit, Cleveland or Pittsburgh, I don't think you have to spend more than 1 night in Detroit or Cleveland (if any at all). Pittsburgh is actually very nice from what I've heard and they have really done a good job at cleaning up their city image in comparison to 5 to 10 years ago. I really don't have any desire to visit Detroit or Cleveland unless its for a baseball game and I'd only go for the day. Both cities are dives. Around the ballpark in Detroit is nice with some good restaurants and bars, but I wouldn't go walking around the city like you would here in Toronto especially at night. Just use your street smarts and that applies to anywhere you go, and you'll be fine. You should do a road trip on the west coast if you haven't already, which is far better. Start down in San Diego, then hit up Anaheim, Dodgers Stadium, San Fran, and maybe even Seattle. Only difference is that you'll have to pay for the flight there, but you could get good deals like a month or two in advance for around $500 for a RT to Cali.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 lol In South Africa, in cities like Johannesburg cars have flamethrowers installed to prevent carjackings at red lights lol. Its like Mad Max over there haha.

Any tips/tricks? Thanks Cleveland is actually a pretty interesting city. Check out the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame while you're there. I only had 2 hours to check it out, and could have definitely stayed longer!!! There is an area near the Quicken Loan basketball arena with some good restaurants and interesting architecture. I ate at a place called Zocalo Tequilaria and the food was good/ inexpensive. There were all sorts of other restaurants on that strip that looked pretty good.
Virgil_Hiltz Verified Member Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 Gave her directions and told her not to stop at any red lights unless she was yielding to oncoming traffic. We had family in Ferndale and Silvery Heights Michigan and this was the same advice they had since the 50's! I remember as a kid back in the 60's getting into my uncles car to go somewhere and as we were backing out of his driveway he remembered he forgot something. He made everyone get out of the car and go back into the house with him for about 5 seconds He refused to leave anyone in a stopped car, even in his driveway. AMERICA...HOME OF THE BRAVE! We have the Aug Cleveland roadtrip planned for about 20 of us.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 For minimal driving do Pirates Friday night (stay in Pittsburgh), Cleveland Saturday (stay in Cleveland or Toledo if you want to save money...maybe even add in a Mudhens game), Detroit Sunday...drive home without staying in Detroit if that concerns you. I think it's 13 hours total driving time First week of June Pirates vs. Angels, Indians vs. Royals, Tigers vs. White Sox (opponents suck I know) July 8th (with a small twist) Pirates vs. Cubs, Indians vs. Yankees, Back to Toronto for Tigers at Jays. ( a truly sweet trip) Aug 19th Pirates vs. Marlins, Indians vs. Jays, Tigers vs. Red Sox Sept 23 Pirates vs. Nats, Indians vs. White Sox, Tigers vs. Royals. I think these are the only weekends that work (I didn't look at April or May). Edit...if you are willing to do weeknights I didn't search that.

Best matchups, plus I get to see the jays. Thanks for doing all that research for me btw. I already had it figured out though lol
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2016 Author Posted March 8, 2016 Oh, and I decided to catch the Astros in Pittsburg on the monday night instead of the Marlins. I'll probably do Detroit on friday, Indians on sat AND sunday, and Pittsburgh on the Monday.

intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 Can't wait to see Jays in Fenway, Yankees and Mets with a bus with wifi I've been to New York so many times and not once have I attended a game at Shea Stadium, Citi Field, or old or new Yankee Stadium. I'm an embarrassment. The only stadium I've ever seen a game at is SkyDome/RC. One time I passed by Kauffman in the winter.
spats Verified Member Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 Can't wait to see Jays in Fenway, Yankees and Mets with a bus with wifi Is that part of an organized bus trip? If so, any info on it would be appreciated.
spats Verified Member Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 I did one with Buckley's baseball tours a few years ago...best trip ever. Started in New York vs Jays, then on to Fenway, back to New York for a Mets game at Citi Field. From there, we went to the Hall of Fame induction, followed by a game in Philly, then back to NYC. Great seats at all the games, plus tours of Yankee Stadium and Fenway. It also included city tours in Manhattan, Boston and Philly.
