Laika Community Moderator Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 He's just a big mouth. His heart believes in hometown discounts because it will help him become a sports legend.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 There's an MLB team in Santo Domingo now?
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Looks like Jose has a number and he's sticking to it. Probably not willing to budge from it. It will be interesting to hear the number down the road and whether it's reasonable or not. That being said, I have always felt we should be paying Bautista market value.
Governator Community Moderator Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 You can't blame Bautista and media shouldn't ask him questions that will undoubtedly make him look bad no matter how he answers.

I've given this organization a 5-year hometown discount already. #BlueJays Sure, in retrospect the extension worked out very well for the organization. However, at the time, Jose wasn't signing that deal out of the goodness of his heart; there was risk assumed by both sides. Regardless of how that deal worked out, I hope the organization offers him a deal based on expected future value, and not because he's "owed" anything due to the surplus value he provided over the past 5 years.
GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 How much leverage does a 35 year old player really have? Especially one who has battled nagging injuries for the last 3 years.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Over/Under 100 Million for what the number he told them was?
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 You can't blame Bautista and media shouldn't ask him questions that will undoubtedly make him look bad no matter how he answers. I don't blame Jose for the answer or the media for asking the question. This is as expected. He was clear in an interview with Brunt last year that this was his position. Some fans want to hear "I'd give my left nut to stay in TOR...I owe you all everything". We are going to have to endure a lot of talk on this subject beyond whats already taken place.
Governator Community Moderator Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 How much leverage does a 35 year old player really have? Especially one who has battled nagging injuries for the last 3 years. The fact that he's pretty desirable on the open market, I'd say he's not in a bad position.

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 "Jose Bautista has given the #BlueJays a dollar amount and number of years it will take to sign him. Says no need for negotiation beyond that"

I also dont know why some of you are butthurt over his comments - this is all pretty obvious, isn't it? Yep. Anybody who has ever been paid below market value for several years would know how obviously enticing it is to finally get paid what you're worth. It was a great extension for us, and realistically this is Jose's last big nut before he retires. Of course he's going to take maximum dollar value, this is his financial windfall that he'll live on for the rest of his life and leave as a legacy for his family. You'd have to be a real ******* to begrudge him that after all he's given us.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Arden The Blue Jays attempted to negotiate with Bautista's terms but he told them not to waste their time
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Barry Davis Bautista says #bluejays asked what it will take to keep him here. He gave him a number and yrs and says he won't negotiate more
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 The five year deal he initially signed was not a discount at the time. Bautista showed all the signs of a sustainable breakout but given his age and his prior performance it was definitely a risk by the Jays as well. In hindsight he was grossly underpaid, so he does have a reason to test free agency. Regardless, no big shock. I've been saying for months that he's gone after the year. Front office won't overpay for him and Bautista won't sign for less.
GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 I love how AA built an unsustainable major league team in terms of finances and future assets but Shapiro will take the blame for having to deal with it.

He gave him a number and yrs and says he won't negotiate more That's a bit hardline but overall fair. Even if nothing comes to fruition now, we can wait see what the market is for him as it develops. He is a very elite hitter but I can't see any teams going beyond 4 years for him, so we could easily get back in the negotiations next offseason.

Lol this is stupid if this is in reference to Bautista. AA signed him for 6 years and it couldn't have worked out any better.

Yes, it's so awful that we have 3 of the Top 20 hitters in MLB and an ALCS run. God DAMN you, Anthopoulos!
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 chisholm - For anyone speculating on how many years Bautista wants, he was asked if he could play another five years. His answer was an emphatic yes. Looks like it'll be $100m

Stanton 13 years deal. David Price 217M The market is crazy and loves dingers. Jose could get 5 years or 4 plus option for over 20 AAV

AA signed him for 6 years and it couldn't have worked out any better. No its in reference of his liberal use of prospects to acquire expensive star names like Reyes and Buehrle only to have to spend more prospect capital to upgrade Reyes to Tulowitzki. Then you have the back loading of Martin's deal beyond what he was planning to stay here for. Also rushing prospects towards super 2 status to further inflate salary earlier.
Governator Community Moderator Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 If I'm Bautista I'm milking every dollar I can out of these next 5 years.
