Those are the ways of these Trouba.

He's too old to resign. Draft pick compensation please. Thanks for your services, Jose! I'm with GeorgiaPeach on this one. However, Edwin I'd look to resign. Can I not have an opinion if it's the unpopular one?

I don't get how so many can write JB off so easily. He is a premier talent and one of the best offensive players in the MLB. Sure he will decline, but as of right now he would be the best offensive player on the majority of MLB teams. We're not talking about the average middle of the order bat here, we're talking about a franchise altering bat. I'd easily resign him.

Why are you so fixated on age? Shouldn't you look at other factors like position, body durability etc.. Jose might be older but he has the much better body shape and overall fitness level than Encarnacion.

Bautista is going to get paid. He signed an undermarket deal at the time and he will need to be compensated

That was a contract essentially paid to him based on one good year. I think everyone wondered if it would be a terrible deal for the Jays. There was risk for both Bats and the FO when that deal was signed. So I don't think he signed undermarket at the time. I am not sure many teams would have offered him that deal, given the risk and he being pretty unproven at the time. My thoughts.

You don't think Jose would factor in that this is "his" team? He seems like a very proud guy and also that he really enjoys playing here. He's a goddamn Toronto legend.

I said it before but I'll say it again, I simply can't even imagine current superstar Joey Bats playing for anyone else. Guy will almost certainly be worth the contract he signs and it's a no brainer from a PR perspective + he really likes it here.

Edwin might be harder. I'm not usually so gung ho about having a guy retire in Toronto but I would be very disappointed if it didn't happen.

That ultimatum his agent issued kind of made it seem like Edwin already has one foot out the door.

Edwin's got a shot at a big pay day he probably never thought he'd had until a few years ago. It's very understandable that he wants to get a nice last big payday.

I like Edwin but I could live without him. I'm all on the Bautista train, though.

I can live without Edwin IF Bautista is signed. Signing one of the two seems like the best balance of what makes sense from an emotional point of view and what makes practical sense.

Too bad our farm is pretty much depleted, because otherwise, I'd love to see both Edwin and JB shipped off this year, to get us a boatload of great prospects.

But given how bare the cupboard is, I just don't see replacing Edwin with Matt Hague, and Jose with Dalton Pompey

I don't read much into these comments. Its what they all say and have to unless things have gone seriously south in the relationship...which is not the case here.

It seems opinions on trying to sign neither, one or both of these guys (and if one which one) are evolving OTB as the team's situation evolves. I like them both but understand the parameters Shapiro is working with. Just going to put my faith in people I'm hoping are a lot smarter than us to make the right personnel business calls here for the health of the org.

Keep in mind with 10/5 players you can't just trade them without consent. I honestly don't see why they wouldn't both hit free agency, they don't owe the Jays anything - no player owes their former team anything when a contract ends. They will go to the highest bidder and if the Jays match the bid or closely match it they would stay. Otherwise, it's possibly their last chance to get paid why the hell wouldn't they explore all options?

Hague signed in Japan.

Yeah I don't think either player will sign an extension prior to the season. These guys are in their mid-30's or close to it in Edwin's case. This will be their last chance at a monster contract. Unless the Jays give Bautista and/or Edwin a fair market value contract (whatever they interpret that as), I think they'll test the market. Of course, that doesn't mean they won't re-sign, as we saw with Alex Gordon, maybe the grass isn't greener on the other side even after testing the market.

I've said before, I don't mind bringing neither of them back, as you'd be paying them for their declining years after five plus years of getting enormous surplus value. However, I'd be fine with bringing Bautista back. It's hard to say, but I think he'll be the one that ages more gracefully than EE, and for sentimental purposes he's far more valuable to the organization than EE is. Bringing both back is a pipe dream, and bringing neither back is my guess as to what actually happens. A lot will depend on how the 2016 season plays out and what the payroll is going forward.

Boras could give Jose and Edwin over to 90M... If Jose and/or Edwin hires Boras we are screwed .

Last chance to be rich.

They are already rich. If it's about money then it's only about ego, not about being rich.

The ultimate goal in baseball is to win the world series every year. That is why they compete. When you have a chance to win a WS you don't trade veterans for prospects.

relatively... Jose's only made 70 million so far in his career and Edwin is at 40. That's very low compared to other elite hitters.

A lot of atheletes could care less aboutt winning. Their there to make money. Greinke himself said he'll go to the highest bidder. Does that sound like someone who wants to win?

I meant the team not the athletes

So the company you work for...say you got an offer that paid a non-insignificant raise from a rival company. Your boss says "hey man, please stay for less money. Your co-workers will miss you."

Would you just say "oh, we can't have that" and stay there?

I don't understand how you're so incapable of simple logic.

I think people overlook the players union side of it as well when it comes to contracts. Bautista is a big union guy so he is going to try to get the best possible deal he can get. If he signs for only 75 Million other players will be mad because when it comes time to discuss their own contracts teams will say well if Jose is only worth "X" amount of money then we can only pay you this amount.
Posted
It is not inconceivable that a player would choose to stay with a team he really liked if the money was fairly comparable and he had a real shot at winning with that club.
Posted
This is key. Bautista may want to stay a Jay but he'll expect a competitive offer as he should.

4-5 years at 14-15m per seems competitive to me.
