saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 He said this at the dinner? lol He should just zip it now. to be fair....he was and well, pretty much everyone was drinking....and Joe Montana was the there. Him and Colabella weren't even the headliners...so maybe he was trying to impress Joe!
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 (edited) his OBP in 1992 was .304...it was pathetic. We all know why Cito batted him leadoff and it had nothing to do with his OBP. For all his speed I don't recall White even being as good at base stealing as you might have expected. It became moot when Gillick acquired Henderson of course. This should have forced White to the 9 spot (Wait, did Gaston hit him 9th or no. I'm suddenly not sure) Edit: the dumb f*** hit White 2nd. How could I forget this. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CHA/CHA199310050.shtml?mobile=false Edited February 20, 2016 by G-Snarls

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 Stats > memory SB 346 CS 98 Career for White That's terrible, plus Brownie meant Cito was batting White leadoff because of race, and his old school archaic views. How's my math, lol. Yeah, that's good.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 Hitting White 2nd and Molitor 6th would be a firable offence in this day and age. Unless you win the WS of course (see Yost, Ned)
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 That's terrible, plus Brownie meant Cito was batting White leadoff because of race, and his old school archaic views. True Only fast looking black guys can hit leadoff as far as Cito was concerned
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 Cito would have loved Anthony Gose and Billy Hamilton. Black, nice low OBP, crazy fast.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 Jesus, if Cito wanted speed and OBP(lol), Robbie was a perfect candidate.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 Jesus, if Cito wanted speed and OBP(lol), Robbie was a perfect candidate. Yeah. This has been discussed on here several times. Before they got Henderson the lineup probably should have been. Alomar Molitor Olerud Carter With White 9th Once they got Henderson, you move that top 4 back one spot But oh well. Back to back WS.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 Just looked at PITCHES/PA data. Martin (3rd), Bautista (8th), EE, and Donaldson in top 25 in AL. Having those four at the top of the lineup will make the pitcher work more leading off the game. On a team that doesn't have guys on base ahead of JD, Bats, EE run much anyway, its a consideration. Making a pitcher throw 15-20 pitches or more starting the game is not insignificant. Many of the blow out games were due to a whack of runs in the early innings. EDIT: expect there is a strong correlation between OBP and P/PA, anyway, so using OBP good enough.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 Honestly though, if I'm Gibbons, I have to say something to Pillar about lobbying for the leadoff spot on Twitter and at charity dinners.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 Russell Martin is elite. Dude has been inthe lb for 10 years and has gone to post season 8 times. This is with 4 different teams, two of which had not made the playoffs for two decades until he joined. Oh yeah and the two times his team didn't make the playoffs. He was mainly injured on year and they barely missed one year

Everyone also had Martin in their top 5, one as high as #2.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 78% is pretty good and he was 81% as a leadoff hitter. White was an above average hitter in Toronto too. I don't think this level of vitriol is warranted. You see teams doing much worse. Making the other team remove their starting pitcher earlier isn't really a productive goal. Especially against the Yankees
puphood Verified Member Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 Saunders was quoted that his knee is good and ready to go, which is probably the best news to date I have heard if true.....
fireballW Verified Member Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 Really like the idea of at least giving Martin a shot to lead off. I know a few seasons lately haven't been amazing OBP-wise but he is a year away from a .400 obp season.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 Happ looking happy to be back with the Blue Jays. Its funny, he looks like the kind of guy who hates Toronto. First his comments in 2009 after almost being in the Halladay trade. Then 2014 when he wasn't getting the starts I was really surprised to see him sign here, just didn't get it. you know what else i didn't get Trading an ace reliever for a guy who is now 7th on your starting pitching depth charts.

He said players were worried about bad Tropicana Field turf" #BlueJays had chance at home field, but last 3 games of season in Tampa, Revere said: "I thought my legs were about to fall off."

Tell us how you would construct a lineup to extend the length opposing pitchers stay in the game. Because it can't by The Book, if you really subscribe to the thought process above. Can't have your cake and eat it too, North.

Unless you win the WS of course (see Yost, Ned) When you look at those 1992 and 1993 Jays teams you wonder how they didn't win 100 games each year. They certainly should have. Cito was worth -5 WAR at least probably for stupid decisions.
