Nafro Verified Member Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 Yeah I get that....although Utley wasn't overly flashy either. He was never an MVP, never won gold gloves, no big post season numbers or championship rings to his name. He was a mid 20 to low 30 HR hitter, which didn't stand out much between 2005 and 2009. There were other 2nd basemen between 2005 and 2009 to have big years (Soriano, Phillips, Uggla, Pedroia and his MVP season), although none with the consistency of Utley. For me - Utley was much like Edmonds. A very well rounded player who generated a ton of value on the defensive side (which was grossly undervalued in the mid 2000's). I don't think Utley is even a marginal HOF candidate, but you should note he did win a Championship (2008).

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 Chances Arod gets in? 2%? If Bonds doesn't get in, there's literally 0 chance for Arod

All the other 2nd baseman were nowhere near as good as Utley in his prime.

In who's eyes though? the HOF voters or Fangraph's WAR? 2005 - Utley .291/.376/.540 28hr 105 rbi 16 sb 2005 - Soriano .280/.309/.512 36 hr 104 rbi 30 sb 2006 - Utley .309/.379/.527 32 hr 102 rbi 15 sb 2006 - Pedroia .326/.376/.493 15 hr 83 rbi 20 sb (MVP) 2007 - Utley 22 hr 104 runs 103 rbi 9 sb 2007 - Phillips 30 hrs 107 runs 94 rbi 32 sb If you ignore WAR (as most did in 2005/06 and as some voters still do) then I think you can argue other 2nd basemen in baseball were in the same conversation as Utley in his prime....."nowhere near as good" is a bit of a stretch IMO. Edmonds has the most WAR of a CF between 1995 and 2005 (including A.Jones during his prime) in his best season was 2 WAR better than the next best (Beltran) CF in baseball. Just sayin'

Just sayin' Noticed you left the triple slash out for the Phillips comparison. You're really debating honestly, huh?
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 Noticed you left the triple slash out for the Phillips comparison. You're really debating honestly, huh? Phillips had like....a .300 OBP that year and was a league average bat despite the 30-30 year.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 Phillips had like....a .300 OBP that year and was a league average bat despite the 30-30 year. .288/.331/.485 - but only a 104 wRC+ lol. Utley? .332/.410/.566 - wRC+ was 150! Even ignoring the advanced stats for the sake of his "argument", there's no comparison.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 Apparently it's very hard for some to remember how we judged hitters back in 2007...
thatoneguy Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 Who among current active veteran players are shoo ins for the HOF? Thinking age 30 plus guys who already have the resume. http://www.bluejaysmessageboard.com/threads/5198-Future-Hall-of-Famers-Playing-Today
wamco Verified Member Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 Best Post in this thread. Boxy! *claps* Yup, clearly showed us who is the top in this relationship.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 Wonder if Donaldson had 3 straight 7 win seasons and another couple top 3 MVP finishes it would be enough to get him in. He obviously lost a chunk of what was supposed to be his prime years but if he has a few good seasons after age 33-35 it might be close.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 Yup, clearly showed us who is the top in this relationship. *sighs*
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 Who is this wamco stooge anyway? Did he used to post under a different username?
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 Who is this wamco stooge anyway? Did he used to post under a different username? No, he's just your run of the mill old fan who can't let go of the glory days and is still mentally stuck in those years.
