To play devil's advocate for a minute though...Edwin and Bautista both want to win and both were willing to defer salary to get Santana a few years ago. Possible they could give a hometown discount if the team is in any position to win.

They already both gave a discount. Bautista's was a bit more reasonable, considering he had one great year.

 

But Edwin for some reason took a very undermarket deal. He deserves to be paid.

 

at the time of signing there was no Discount at all on either. Neither player had shown any consistency, and in fact Edwin

had been DFA a couple of times. AA took a flyer on both players, offered them contracts that set both players for life, and

both happily accepted.

it turned out to be great signings for both players, and AA. It was win/win.

He's not going to accept a trade. Maybe he would midseason since it wouldn't attach the QO to him but he knows RC is a great place to hit.

don't most players want contract stuff dealt with in the offseason anyway? This doesn't seem like news to me - most players don't want the distraction of a contract negotiation in the middle of a season.

 

It's in Edwins best interest to get locked up before the season starts, before he possibly gets hurt or not playing well.

Is there a reason to think EE can't hit late in to his career like Ortiz has? I know he gets banged up but he still hits the cover off the ball and might continue to do that in his late 30s as an exclusive DH.

I don't think you can write EE from 34-37, anything past that might be questionable. I just don't think it's feasible to keep EE and JB when they both need to DH/1B.

Any time you pay someone big money for what they did in the past, rather than what can be reasonably projected in the future, it becomes a huge risk.

 

If they lose both, then that's about a 9-10 WAR for $24m that they will no longer have. The surplus value is gone and it will surely take way more than $24m to find replacements anywhere near as good as them.

 

Can't trade them due to 10/5 rights and they have no incentive to accept trades elsewhere when they know they play in a park suited for their strengths.

 

So it's either lose both and be stuck having to replace them, or keep one/both and pay two DH's $20m a year during what could be their twilight years. Not an enviable spot to be in.

Older players accept shorter contracts so the amount of risk you take isn't necessarily any greater than with younger players. It all depends on the terms really. The Jays aren't necessarily in a bad position here. The opportunity to sign core pieces to shorter terms doesn't come along very often but EE and JB are the rare players that have the kind of bats that can carry them even when they lose nearly all defensive value. Given that the Jays probably don't want to make any big long term deals, these players might arguably be the ideal ones with which to have an exclusive negotiation window. Another thing that works to the Jays favour is that the two bats are eerily similar. Even if they might have a slight preference for Jose, they'll probably be very content with either one. Assuming that they sign one but not both, they'd probably look to make up some of the lost value by bringing in someone who will contribute more to run prevention.

Bobcat was talking to Jamie Campbell about this matter last night (re-signing EE & Jose) and Jamie commented on how much defense that Jose brings to the table. Funny stuff.

Bautista and EE split 1B duties. Both guys are likely to be worth 60/3 or maybe 80/4.

 

Also, I would definitely reward Bautista for how well he takes care of his body. I disliked Bautista so much at first but now I can't imagine the team without him.
