KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 Also, I would definitely reward Bautista for how well he takes care of his body. I disliked Bautista so much at first but now I can't imagine the team without him. The sentiment of most of the fan base. It's a travesty that Bautista didn't make the Franchise Four but he simply wasn't all that popular at the time despite being easily the most productive offensive player in Jays history.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 Is there a reason to think EE can't hit late in to his career like Ortiz has? I know he gets banged up but he still hits the cover off the ball and might continue to do that in his late 30s as an exclusive DH. I think Ortiz does a better job of hitting the ball away and driving it to CF and LCF than Edwin and its one of the reasons he is still elite at that age. It's rare.

It's rare. It's also exceedingly rare for a power hitter like EE to strike out as seldom as he does. He has such a compact swing. There isn't a lot of wasted movements in his swing. I think these are reasons to suggest he will be productive in his late 30s.

It's rare. Edwin's and Ortiz' age 30-32 seasons are extremely similar, there's no reason to think that Edwin can't be an elite hitter for at least another 3-4 years, or perhaps even until Ortiz' age. Edwin age 30-32 seasons: 109 HR (1787 PA), 149 wRC+ Ortiz age 30-32 seasons: 112 HR (1844 PA), 155 wRC+ IMO, signing Edwin to an extension would be very preferable to signing someone like Chris Davis, who we can reasonably expect to get close to $50M more than an EE extension would cost, and whose skillset is a lot more prone to precipitous decline than Edwin due to his extreme K rate.

Fair comment. What Edwin did at 30-32 doesn't necessarily inform what he does at 35. Ortiz had a dip in 09 at 33 to 100 wRC+. There was a lot of talk he was finished then, but he rebounded as he got older well. Doesn't often happen. To my point above, its interesting to compare their spray charts below. Edwin is an elite bat. His contact and K rates are great with that power. A reasonable ext is worth discussing seriously. http://www.fangraphs.com/spraycharts.aspx?playerid=745&position=DH&type=battedball&pid2=745&ss1=2015&se1=2015&ss2=2012&se2=2015&cht1=battedball&cht2=battedball&vs1=ALL&vs2=ALL http://www.fangraphs.com/spraycharts.aspx?playerid=2151&position=3B&type=battedball&pid2=2151&ss1=2015&se1=2015&ss2=2012&se2=2015&cht1=hangtime&cht2=battedball&vs1=ALL&vs2=ALL Edited December 8, 2015 by BigCecil

And it may be better to go with the guy you know. EE has also proven to be completely fine with being a DH and that's a bonus. Still you look at Davis and you get a little excited by the possible 60 home run season in our park. If you could sign Davis for 4 years then you probably say yes - but 6 is worrying. If he was more of a Jim Thome type hitter he would be fine hitting in his late 30s. It would be nice to have a lefty power bat - but if you project Smoak's numbers to 600 PA from last year he could be a 36 homer guy (18 in less than 300 last year) and for just $3.9 mill and plays a solid first base. The Jays should just sign a bunch of depth guys in the pitching department - get Kawasaki back and then two solid relievers and call it an off season. Or you know Jason Heyward would be nice too.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Where's Atkins and LaCava? lol... lots of chatter coming from our President... Well he's pretty much the GM. Atkins and LaCave are just assistants. Atkins said that he will just be making recommendations to Shapiro about what to do and that Shapiro will be the one making the decisions.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Where's Atkins and LaCava? lol... lots of chatter coming from our President... Shapiro is clearly running the show here. Atkins and LaCava are essentially AGM's, who do the legwork and have the ear of Shapiro.

I read that Atkins is the GM in training/acclimated to the organization through LaCava, Shapiro signs off on everything. P.S. That post was tongue in cheek.

Just his way of telling EE he is fine with him leaving, basically. I doubt he had any intension of extending EE anyway. Personally I don't think He wants any contracts he couldn't move easily when he starts the rebuild.

Money talks whenever it's offered, and I'm sure Edwin would like to stay here if the deal is right. Not sure he doesn't try to put something together with Edwin, but I expect we are looking at picks for both Edwin and Jose B and ill miss them.

Agreed, unless they are under .500 at the break, Then they are probably both gone before the deadline.

EE, Bautista and JD (assuming he does a 1 year deal) all in contract seasons again gives me wood. Tulo for a full season, super jacked. Let EE play his agent games, its almost spring training
