I'd need to see Bautista play some 1st and feel confident that he can make that transition before deciding to extend both. I don't want the team to pay big money to two DHs. If it comes down to only one, I don't have a strong preference. Both mean a lot me as a fan and having at least one of them around would make make it easier to accept losing the other. Would hate to not have at least one of the two.

People who are against extensions should consider thinking about the lineup we had in 2009

You know we were above league average in runs scored that year, right?

Nature of the Rogers Centre means we will always be above league average in runs scored. We will also be above average in runs allowed

Need to be top 3 or top 5 to win consistently

Bautista was orinally a 3rd basemen. I'm sure he can pick up 1st pretty easily.

So paying 5 guys 20+ million each sounds like a good idea to you guys. Smart, very smart

The Yankees model. When a few of these guys fall off a cliff they payroll will have to go a lot higher than it is now to field a competent roster.

That's a 100 million dollars worth. For declining assets.

These guys are getting payed for their bats. Yes injuries will occur but the decline on their bats shouldn't be to crazy.

Donaldson, tulo and martin's bats will not age like Bautista and Edwin. Those guys are rare.

I understand why you'd make that assumption but I'm not comfortable with it. Encarnacion was a 3B too and unlike Bautista his weakness was his arm not his fielding. EE's a pretty bad 1B and I think Bautista might be worse. In any case, I'm not comfortable just assuming he won't be bad.

Repeat after me, we are not the dodgers!

The Dodgers wish they were paying guys like Bautista and Edwin. Instead of the Ethiers, Carl Crawfords, Hector Oliveras. These guys are dead contracts, our top 10 hitters in the league won't be. They might decline to top 30 hitters near the end of their contracts, but that would still probably be worth it.

Their OBP's are a lot closer than you think...

They both have excellent plate discipline. The biggest difference I see is that EE seems to have more extreme runs of being hot or cold. At the end of the day, they come out pretty even as offensive players. Beyond that, Bautista is the more vocal, visible leader while EE is more in the shadows. The fan base always seems likes in on the cusp of turning on Bautista and I expect he would get a lot of hate if and when he signs somewhere else.

Now you're just being disrespectful to Joey and Eddy.

I'm actually complimenting those guys. I think tulo, martin and donaldson's best days with their bats are gone.

Yea I don't have the confidence that Bautista would be any closer to an average 1B defensively and I don't think he'd be better than EE.

EE has actually been improving defensively each year since becoming more or less a regular first basemen in 2012 and this year he actually put up a + UZR/150 for the first time in his career.

2012: 583 innings, -14.5 UZR/150

2013: 698 innings, -10.8 UZR/150

2014: 694 innings, -9.7 UZR/150

2015: 481 innings, +5.1 UZR/150

He's trending in the right direction at least, I think Bautista would start well behind him even if he is naturally a better defender.

Don't forget $30m for Price.

I feel his outstanding post season and the bat flip has finally endeared him to the fans. I think from now on he is loved no matter what happens.

Bautista is a healthy dude. He's gonna be good into his 40's IMO.

defence for bautista already in a severe decline. You can't pay two DH's this kind of dough....

I'm thinking 1B and DH. Which is why I try and get them to sign 2 years right now (with a slightly higher AAV)...and have them do it together. The PR spin for them is great (best friends, country mates...wanting to stay together on the same team). It doesn't even matter if it's not true. It sells their brand.

Carlos Beltran is a healty dude. He's gonna be good into his 40's

Matt Holiday is a healthy dude. He's gonna be good into his 40's

Jimmy Rollins is a healthy dude. He's gonna be good into his 40's

Ichiro is the healthiest dude ever. He's gonna be good into his 50's.

As long as he doesnt try heroic throws to first base because he is pissed and jacked. Ive read his workout regimen is next level. For both of these two it comes down to health.

Maybe incentive laced contracts for health and numbers.

Interesting post. You oftent hear about how EE should play DH but maybe he doesn't. Maybe Bautista straight to DH and EE to 1B is the best configuration and then you don't have to waste playing time on the Justin Smoak's of the world.

EE at 1B more than once or twice a week seems like a bad idea. He seems to always be sore/banged up despite rarely playing the field.

Bautista played hurt most of the year, not sure it's wise to put that much stock into his 2015 defensive metrics. It's actually impressive to see his offensive numbers even when he was hurt.
