I don't think his arm strength is that great but I do like his throwing technique/quickness/decisions. That's not worth a lot of runs through.

You like his throwing technique? It looks like he's throwing a grenade. It's pitiful technique for a ML player.

By technique I mean more to do with his footwork and routes before he throws. Having good footwork, a quick exchange, and making good throwing decisions and accurate throws.

I agree that his specific throwing technique isn't great and his arm strength isn't great, maybe somewhat as a result.

It's terrible technique yes but the dude just gets it in so quick.

I've decided I no longer care about the distant future; I want the Jays to re-sign him.

I am of two minds.

1) Mega-contracts to pitchers in their 30s are bad and if I were the GM I wouldn't even consider it

2) It's not my money and David Price is awesome and exactly what the team needs to maximize short term World Series chances and apparently he want sto be here so do it

I will probably be an apologist no matter what they do

I don't like this, just get Kuma rogers...

The thing about the free agent market is that it's not exactly a market. There needs to be mutual interest.

Who knows if any of the obvious value guys like Iwakuma or Shark even have Toronto on their radar.

I think there is a better chance Pillar has an above average offensive season then him turning into a 2 Win player. I believe there's truth that there is value in being around guys like Donaldson, Bautista, Tulo etc..

Hypothetically, let's say that Toronto reaches out to every free agent pitcher and finds out that the following guys are the only ones that will sign with Toronto (at these prices):

Price 7/$210

Chen 5/$80

Happ 3/$42

Fister 1/$10

Pelfrey 2/$15

Is it really such an easy decision to not sign Price?

Yeah I'd probably go for Price if those are the only options. Not so sure the FO would do the same though. I wonder if Price would sign for $180-190 if Boston were to offer something like $230

Probably not.

All of this "Price likes Toronto" stuff probably just means that IF Toronto offers him a market value deal then he will accept. He's not going to leave money on the table for Toronto.

If Chen is our consolation prize...it could be worse.

Of if he really did want to go to Toronto and didn't care about the extra money his agent is just trying to get more $ out of Toronto. I think Boston wants Price but they are also leaking to the media about going "all in" to drive up the price if Toronto were to sign him since they are a division rival.

I dunno, I'd rather they not do anything then if the other choice is committing 200 million to a pitcher. Maybe I'm crazy.

not crazy

just adding a bunch of cheap depth is a viable strategy

I almost think there would be more dead money on a 5/80 deal for Chen than a 7/210 deal for Price. I mean, you probably get at least 15 WAR (135 mil value) up front from Price in the first 3 years and then it's a crapshoot. I don't trust Chen to be a whole lot more than Hutchison or Sanchez to be honest, though I know that is an unfounded opinion.

I mean often part of the issue in projecting these guys is they play in a different league, but a guy like Chen takes that out of the equation. Plus I want a lefty to round out the rotation. I think if we're looking for a Beurhle replacement he fits. Obviously Chen on a 4 year deal looks much better...but he doesn't have a history of injuries, and he doesn't rely on his velocity to be effective. Think he'd age well. 5 years might be too rich for me. I'd rather give Greinke 6/180 anyway...but I doubt he's interested in playing here.

Do you think having a lefty significantly improves the rest of the rotation? Similar to a Dickey effect type of thing?

I would love Fister at 1/10 that would be a solid starting 6

Stro

Dickey

Estrada

Chavez

Fister

Hutch

Maybe we sign another guy on high minor league deal like Diamond.

Not sure if you noticed but Fister was sitting at about 86mph this year. Didn't even touch 90 once. That's down 2.5 - 4 mph from his peak

Fister is donezo. He would get absolutely hammered in the AL East parks. I wouldn't even give him $5M, that's how cooked he is.

Not really. Actually not sure if it's important at all. How many all righty rotations are out there? Can't say I've dug into it. If we run into a team that mashes lefties it factors in. Just a general thought more than anything for a bit of balance.

If it isn't much of a factor, which I'm not saying it is, more out of curiosity, then I'd want Shark ideally. Honestly if Chen is our #2, I'd probably prefer to get someone via trade. Only guys like Shark, Cueto or Zimmerman are guys who I think move the needle as #2s.

Fister looks finished. No reason to commit any money to him at all.

Yeah maybe, I've always just liked his style and think he's crafty enough to get guys out still.

Same. He's always been a favourite of mine.

I think the Royals went all righty after getting Cueto, but there must be a few others. Interestingly, the White Sox have a shot to go all lefty (Sale, Quintana, Rodon, Danks, ?).
