Do you think this will affect teams' QO decisions in the future?

Pulk_Pull Verified Member Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 People said Weiters was gonna get a big deal. Hahhaha I bet he's hoping to cash in on a bigger deal next year. I think he would of gotten an ok deal, but as a C he wants to cash in on a McCann/Martin level deal.
nmrch Verified Member Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 Wieters was probably the number 1 candidate to accept the QO if he wasn't a Boras client. Everything about his situation pretty much dictates that he accept, but Boras is notorious at bending clients to his well, i guess he wasn't successful this time.

It would have kept his options open, that's why the MLBPA and Boras in particular don't like players accepting QO's. The worst case scenario for Weieters would have been a one year deal with a small paycut, around ~10 million. And there might have been a chance for him to snag a good long term deal.

The first ever player to accept a Q.O. in the old system was Greg Maddux, a Boras client. Maddux read the tea leaves and determined that was the best return for Maddux. The Braves didn't really want to pay him either but they just assumed he would decline because everyone else had.

I still don't understand why he would accept. Could have explored deals all winter and then got something like this in Feb. He's so talented

Could have explored deals all winter and then got something like this in Feb. He's so talented He probably already explored deals and since no one offered him a good deal he accepted the QO. Also there aren't really any contending teams in need of a C who would want to waste a draft pick on him.

How is 10 million (vs. 15.8) a "small paycut?!?!"

jayswin11 Verified Member Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 I thought Lackey would accept. I don't see him getting a better deal. I bet he resigns with Cardinals something similar to what Estrada got, that or he is in the same boat as Ervin Santana a couple years ago.
BlueBirdBro Verified Member Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 Wieters had a down year. Taking a one year 15m paycheque to rebuild some value and cash in isn't a bad idea. He said he had multi year offers but obviously they weren't good ones. He puts up a huge year and suddenly maybe a desperate team offers him McCann/Martin money. Totally understandable decision for him and his family.

If he had a multiple year offer, take the deal and get security... He could get hurt next season and its all over.' Yet... If one of us won $15.8M in the lottery, we're set for life.

nmrch Verified Member Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 How is 10 million (vs. 15.8) a "small paycut?!?!" In the context of where his career is right now and the upside of waiting, $5.8 million isn't that much to risk, especially when a 1 year 10 million deal is the worst case scenario. More likely, if he waited and didn't find a long term suitor he could have found a 1 year deal in the 12-15 million range no problem. Boras isn't stupid, remember he's risking 1/10th(or whatever his rate is) of what Weiters would have been giving up but the chance to get a "fair" long term deal with the worst case scenario being another one year deal should be a gamble worth taking on.
