During the season I never would have thought so but now I agree. The reality of our dearth in SP has sunk in along with the cost of FAs.

When Chen seeks a 5 year deal, its clear that expectations are high for a sellers market.

2 years 26M generally gets you a very fringe 4/5th starter or a guy with major health concerns

If this is the deal I love it

2 years, $26 million, which just happens to be the exact figure I predicted yesterday. Just check that thread that got deleted!

any hints on whether there will be an option for 2018?

I bet it's something like 12, 12, 12 team option with 2M buyout.

that would be a good deal for both parties. Jays get a solid starter with experience for a good price. even if he has a slight down turn it's still a good price for what the jays are getting. always better with the devil you know...

Not much we can complain about if he even comes close to last year's numbers. Basically we really don't have a choice either way since this team needs more of a sure thing next year to compete versus waiting for younger guys to possibly develop. We don't have time to take chances and Estrada should keep this team in ball games. Now we need to see who we can sign for the #2 spot which is more important.

Seems about right but not necessarily in that order i would like to think:

Stro

FA

Estrada

Dick

Hutch/osuna/Dirty Sanchez.

Who knows Dickey is on a good contract might trade him if the opportunity comes up.

There should be plenty of budget to go after one of Samardzija, Kazmir, Maeda, Chen, Iwakuma, Lackey, Anderson, etc and also sign or trade for a good reliever to backfill Osuna.

I really want to see Hendriks given a chance to start from day 1, and Sanchez to be left in the pen forever or traded.

But not so nice for the Bluejays. I guess it's better then him taking the QO but probably should have never been offered one in the first place.

3rd worst xFIP in baseball last year among qualified starters.

We've been discussing his possible ability to beat DIPS thanks to his changeup and overall pitching strategy that induces many flyballs and infield flies. While he's likely due for regression, Estrada is probably not a true talent ~5.00 ERA pitcher. How good he is, likely somewhere in the range of 3.5-4.5 ERA, is the big debate here.

With our offense it would mean favorites to win WS.

We definitely need another starter. Having Hutch/Sanchez/Osuna in the 5-spot is key to ensuring we have depth for injury. Someone like Kuma or Kazmir would be a great fit.

So does this mean we re-sign Navarro too?

I say, give the guy a chance to test the market and see if he can find a starting gig. If not, let him know the door is open for him to return as a backup for $4million.

He and Estrada worked pretty well together, and his offense is not bad, as backup catchers go.

Was wondering same. AJP just signed for 1/3mm.

Hutch is going to have a big year this year I can almost guarantee it. No pressure on being the #1 guy and he is still young. Sanchez to the pen for life.

A big year from Hutch would be massive

But the front office has to go through this off season making decisions assuming he will be total crap, IYAM

If Hutch has a great year, Osuna should start in AAA, and Sanchez should start in AA to completely refine his delivery and pitch selection (hopefully Shapiro's guys can work their magic).

That would be good but despite their limitations, we don't have the depth to have these 2 young inexpensive arms in the ML in 2016 IMO.

When has he ever had the pressure to be a #1 guy?

I really don't want to do the personal catcher thing with Estrada again. Surely Martin and Estrada can work things out in such a way that Martin will call the game Estrada wants. If anyone should have a personal catcher it's Dickey and resigning Navarro would get in the way of that.

Surely calling Fastball / Change up can't be that difficult to call a good game for Martin. Once it worked for Navarro it just made sense to give Martin a regular rest day, I don't believe he's played 140 games+ in years.

Yeah I agree. Martin should catch Estrada this year. Sign someone like Kratz to catch Dickey.

That's fair, but I would hate to see the development of Osuna wasted as a reliever again over the inconsistent Hutch. I'd rather Hutch be in AAA until he dominates, and let Osuna start the year as the 5th guy. Sanchez should just be traded if he's not going start in the minors, it's only a matter of time before his BABIP balloons and his ERA resembles his FIP with his current repertoire.

Yeah, I'm not saying that I don't believe that Navarro calls a better game. I'm more than willing to believe that but at the same time I feel like this can't be allowed to become something that handicaps Martin. Figure out the differences between what the two catchers were calling and work it out.

Fangraphs:

it wouldn’t be wise to bet on Estrada running a .216 BABIP again, but since becoming a regular in 2011, he’s suppressed production on balls in play better than any pitcher in baseball, and his four-year BABIP of .254 makes this year’s outlier figure look a bit less like an outlier. Since 2013, that number is .242. You don’t ever want to bet on someone repeating a .216 BABIP, but if you had to bet on anyone, Marco Estrada might be your guy.

Martin's issue is he seems to call far too many fastballs in terrible places, like in on a hitter who likes it in or away to a hitter who usually flips the ball oppo. I don't know why he does stuff like that, but I noticed it the entire year?

To be fair he's played the majority of his career in the NL, it takes a bit of time to catch up on a slew of new hitters tendencies. Between learning to catch a knuckleball along with getting familiar with new pitchers, including two midseason with Price & Stroman, probably somewhat tough to keep up with studying hitters zones as well. I think he'll have a better year next season especially if he's not catching Dickey.
