This is very true and many here are missing this. It's the reason why 2013 was a ticket sale success compared to other years. Hype generates not only advance ticket sales, but sales throughout the season as well just to see the stars compete. The contracts may become albatross' but could very well be off-set by public interest being theoretically capitalized. It's the same reason the Darvish contract was a success for Texas (even if he ended up being mediocre), and the Pujols deal was for LA (with their heavy Latino demo).

Indeed they do. They hedge it enough to account for variance.

It doesn't really work like that. Sure you will get a boost from ticket sales but signing a s***** contract will come back to kill you way more than the extra 5,000 ticket sales. Most of the money is in TV and if the team is good people will watch regardless of who they signed 2 months ago. Just increase payroll a little bit (145-150)so you save the PR shitstorm of slashing payroll after record profits.

The Martin and Donaldson moves didn't really do anything for ST sales last year which I wouldn't of expected.

Rogers gets a ridiculous deal on the TV contract since the Blue Jays can only negotiate with SN which screws over the jays. In 2013 the TV deal was worth a whopping $36 million. No one knows the actual figure for 2015 or 2016? but my guess is it is close to $80 million or more.

How much would it get on the open market if CBC or TSN was allowed to bid for the rights? Probably close to $200 million if not more would be my guess but its all a guessing game. So SN (Rogers) gets an unreal deal since they don't have to pay revenue sharing on the TV deal and get to keep all the profit, while the Blue Jays in a way get screwed since it won't show up in their profits.

IFRS allows for intangible assets like TV Rights to be revalued using the revaluation model, so, technically, they should be able to generate an unrealized gain from the difference between its original cost and the fair value of the rights today. The gain would go through OCI so it could be measurable to Rogers.

Just give up an extra 5% of your paycheque so my kids can get free marijuana from Trudeau and Ed Rogers and everything will be forgiven.

Rogers "deal" allows them to set an arbitrary salary budget for the team

and prevents revenue sharing with other MLB teams (not sure how this works or how teams would allow this to happen but same thing is done with Yankees and Dodgers, who own their own sports networks - but blue jay viewer numbers blow the Yankees and dodgers out of the water)

American viewers seem to be worth more money than Canadian viewers though. But yeah even if say 1 American viewer=1.75 Canadian viewer in terms of $ the Blue Jays TV contract is worth well well over $100 million.

New #BlueJays prez Shapiro and interim GM Lacava have been told by Rogers they will begin season with budget of at least $140M: source

Rogers has told Jays execs they may approve higher payroll than team had in 2015 if situation merits.

Starting payroll in 2015 was about 115MM. With the acquisitions was about ~135MM. I think a little less than some of us expected but good news nonetheless.

Rogers are geniuses. Get Mccowan to say payroll is going down and then keep the payroll the same so the fans are happy.

McCowan also said that it would unacceptable if Rogers even "kept payroll the same", much less reduced it; so I don't think Rogers is puppeteering him lol.

Bobcat said he said it would be merely adequate if the payroll went up by 5% and it should go up by 10-20% based on the revenue figures, after sharing, that he was told. He never provided those figures, so I can't agree to that fully, but it does prove Rogers isn't speaking through him.

Yep. I was kind of meh at first when it was rumoured to be staying roughly the same, then completely depressed with the cutting back rumour, and now that we're back at 140 I'm ready to dance in the street.
