I check this site multiple times a day and didn't even see this info because I didn't wade through every page of a huge thread. Really getting out of control around here with bans and thread merging.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Peace out Izturis you piece of s***. Eating 3m the last 3 years. f*** you.

Seriously...this is what you choose to complain about. It's not like there was a debate about whether this is the right move or not. It's really about as thread-worthy as a player having an off season Brazilian.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Time to merge the thread. Want to see heads explode. Make it happen.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 I'm actually okay with it having it's own thread. Off season only has small pockets of big activity, and will have a Mod Chat about calming down on the merges. However, I didn't feel that this was one that deserved a re-post and a rant though. For the record if any player does get an off-season Brazilian, and you have photo evidence (maybe a nice Nutscape shot click here for the beauty and art of the nutscape http://metro.co.uk/2015/10/27/men-are-taking-photos-of-their-balls-in-front-of-beautiful-landscapes-5465223/), please start a new thread for it.

I don't think they intended on him being a backup, I think he was supposed to be the starting 2B. That being said, I think it was a pretty awful contract as I think even when healthy he'd have been a replacement level 2B and yeah I agree there is no need to give a replacement level a deal longer then one or two seasons max

BTS Community Moderator Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Am I the only one who had no issue with the Izturis signing? The team had no middle infielders and at the time he was as consistent and reliable as a bench middle infielder could be. $3.33M for a guy who looked like a great bet to provide 0.5-1.5 WAR in a part-time role is not too high a price to pay, and the third year was required to get him. He fell off a cliff at 32 years old, but I don't think it's fair to blame AA for not seeing that coming.

Thinking back there was a lot of criticism of our If depth the yr before and Izzy was in part an answer to that. We didn't have a great track record at signing FA then which probably led to the deal being a yr longer than it should have been. You are right its not a huge deal and the guy had some freak injuries.
intrigid Verified Member Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Yeah merging this into another (generic) thread was stupid. Doesn't matter how unimportant the topic is. Someone will glance, see there's no topic, and start one, and then it's even more splintered than before. Merging two threads of the exact same topic into one is good, but merging a specific one into a generic one is not something I agree with.

The bigger issue was that between Bonifacio and Izturis, he didn't have a good defensive 2B who could backup SS adequately in case of an injury. Instead he merely had two bad 2Bs. So it's not that Izturis was a bad contract in isolation but given the overall roster contstruction, AA would have been far better off just holding on to Aviles, a player capable of providing defensive value who didn't need to be signed to FA terms. It was an ill advised and unnecesary signing but ultimately only one small part in a massive turd of an off-season.

Filling out the last 4 or 5 spots on the roster always seemed to be AA's weak spot; opting for the DeRosas and Vizquels of the world rather than guys who could actually play and/or had a meaningful role to play. This past season was really no different, considering we had all of (I think) Colabello, Valencia and Goins getting time in LF.

Perhaps it's folklore, but I tend to see that as common knowledge.

I just see that as he wants to pour as much $ into starters - at the expense of keeping "good" bench players. It's a risk/reward thing. To be honest, it worked this year with Goins providing a ton of value while costing next to nothing. It didn't work out in LF due to a combination of the Saunders injury and Pompey sucking the hind tit.

Sometimes it's not so much about having "good" bench players as much as it is just having guys that are capable of playing the position at all. If I'm not mistaken, the initial arrival of Kawasaki, for example, ocurred when Reyes went down and there wasn't another guy on the 40 man roster that was capable of filling in at short. After the early season demotion of Pompey, who would have played CF in the event that Pillar went down? I'm guessing Bautista? I think there is a certain amount of luck in that Pillar emerged in the manner that he did, and that one of Osuna/Castro were effective.

AA said that the reason he signed a Visquel/Derosa was to help the clubhouse chemistry. Said that in the past he thought he could sign 1 guy to help make the clubhouse better but that in hindsight you need to have a roster with 20 of 25 good character guys. Escobar/Rasmus/Lawrie must really of been cancers lol

Funny looking back how there were posters on here crying about Matt West and Preston Guilmet being sent to the minors instead of Osuna.

I still don't see what harm there would have been in giving them a shot rather than making a reliever out of your top starting prospects (actually two of your top starting prospects if you count Castro). It's not like Castro and Osuna wouldn't still have been options if West and Guilmet didn't turn out. I still maintain that was a bizarre and unnecesary move albeit one that did turn out quite well for Osuna.
